Wow, people really like to misinterpret this rant, don't they. She's not saying that non-black people are not allowed to watch and enjoy the film. She's asking people not to be racist when discussing it and/or creating fanworks. Black folks aren't exactly swimming in big-screen superheroes, so it would be disheartening for them if they went looking around the fandom, only to find racist language everywhere. Yeah, it's kinda angrily worded, but politeness tends to get ignored.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see it if they were saying don't be all "BP is my nigga!' but saying 'bae' is racist now? The sensitivity goalpost has moved since I've last been on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but like

it's one thing to disagree on where you should specifically draw the line, with regards to the language that's objectionable

but people are reacting like the entire concept is the end of civilization

it seems disproportionate

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Bae is black slang. A lot of black people view white people using it as appropriation.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Language policing. Words for me but not for thee? Screw that noise. It's part of popular culture. Once slang gets out into the wild anyone can use it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)

Using it in the same context as the original group uses it isn't appropriation. It's just how language works. And heck, even if it WAS appropriated, so what? It's just an affectionate term, not something sacred and untouchable.

Also, again, forgetting that other races exist.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You know what I love?

How just one day someone was all like "U MEAN WHITE PEOPLE STOP USING THE HAND CLAPPY THING IN BETWEEN EACH WORD THAT'S RACIST"

I was literally like "????"

I had no idea the origin of that (frankly silly) meme-ish style was apparently a black woman clapping in tune to her words.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
im pretty sure you're the one misinterpreting that rant. it's not racist to call a black character bae or precious son or wife, what is wrong with you?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So you agree that there are things that it would be racist to call them?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah and no one here would bat an eye if the rant had said "pls don't talk about how you want to be ravaged by the savage cast" but it doesn't. it rants about a very specific thing and no amount of "the basic premise of " don't be racist" is reasonable!!! " changes that

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It actually rants about a bunch of different things in the letter. Like, to the point that we talked about the same letter two days ago and we focused on a whole different section. The letter actually is talking about things outside of the specific thing that people are objecting to today.

I actually know the poster on tumblr, she's explained it's meaning several times. As have a few other people. So i know what's it about.

As for calling characters bae or son, as far as I've gathered it's just uncomfortable for some people when white people claim ownership of black people. I'm white myself so I don't have direct impact with racism, I just listen to what non-whites say about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't "claiming ownership of black people". It's treating black characters the same as any other race. It can't be equated to slavery, and even if it could then Arab people and other blacks would have to be included in that as well (why does everyone "forget" that the African slave trade was vast and had many, many destinations? That's just denying history and acting as though real victims didn't exist).

It just rubs me the wrong way to see people demanding double standards, ignoring history and practical usage to do so.

That poster and the 'few other people' that you mentioned need to deal with their own shit and stop making it fandom's responsibility.

'Bae.' Really now.

So if a person calls a white or asian character 'bae' or 'son/daughter' it does not imply ownership?

How many people alive today were actually slaves or had parents or grandparents that were? Probably none.

I'm not denying that slavery doesn't still exist in the world, but it is not just black people. Just because every American public school United States history class teaches about slavery in the U.S people think that is the only time slavery existed.

Sure, but what constitutes "racist" is ridiculous these days. If you want a good preview of what this fandom's going to be like, look at what happened to Stormpilot fans over in Star Wars. It got to the point that they literally could not do anything right-- write Finn topping? You fucking racist, you think all black men are inherently aggressive. Write Finn bottoming? You fucking racist, you think black men belong in subservient roles. Writing smut in which you describe Finn's dick for any reason whatsoever? You fucking racist, obsessed with BBC.

There's a reason it went from the most popular pairing in the fandom to almost nonexistent. That shit is infuriating, and there is no reason for anyone to put up with it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
We are never going to stop hearing about how evil Stormpilot fans are, are we

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What? No, it's what happened to Stormpilot fans. They themselves were fine. It wasn't any particular ship's fans that descended like locusts, I don't think, just assholes who ruined the fun for everyone by screaming about racism that didn't exist.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Referring to black characters in the same way and using the same terms that we use to refer to literally any other character of any other race is just what equality is. Demanding that black characters be treated differently and described with completely different language is special treatment and contributes to othering and prevents black characters from being normalized. It's fandom segregation and there's no way around that.

Not to mention that they put this entirely on whites and ignore every other race out there.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she's saying you don't get to treat this fictional character the same way you would treat other fictional characters, regardless of how you feel about said fictional character, all for the reason that they're black.

It doesn't matter if you really connect with someone in this movie, you don't get to comment on or relate to them as if they had been of another race. You only get to relate to these characters in a way SHE personally approves of. That's what she's saying.

It's so goddamn stupid.

I get being worried about how a black superhero might get treated and reacted to. I even understand feeling possessive of a character when you feel like you related to them because few or no people in the world get you, or celebrating something you've been waiting for since forever. I'll never know what it's like to be waiting for something in fiction to represent my race in an awesome way, but I get those are still valid hopes and feelings. But no matter what, nobody gets to dictate someone else's enjoyment of a character. And to go THIS GUY IS OURS NOT YOURS just worsens any shitty feelings that already exist in fandom, or creates shitty feelings where there weren't any.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she's saying you don't get to treat this fictional character the same way you would treat other fictional characters, regardless of how you feel about said fictional character, all for the reason that they're black.

But why is this prima facie wrong, though.

And to go THIS GUY IS OURS NOT YOURS just worsens any shitty feelings that already exist in fandom, or creates shitty feelings where there weren't any.

It explicitly does not say THIS GUY IS OURS NOT YOURS

Like, it literally says the words "while you get to share it you don't get to claim it"

(Anonymous) 2017-06-28 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
It literally says, "THESE ARE NOT YOUR NEGROES" in the title. It doesn't get much clearer than that.

I can see a point buried in there about historical infantilisation, and also that feelings can get a little raw... but complaining that the exact same language used of established characters might be used of these ones is... odd. Othering. Less than helpful.
