Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-28 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
OP is bitter because of her chub rub.

This is odd. Disney characters don't look like real people. And if the princesses wore pants, they probably would be given a thigh gap. So I have no problem with it.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Both those poses look awkward, especially the one on top. Who stands with one knee almost behind the other AND pigeon-toed like that?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
They are supposed to be walking.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, maybe. I thought only catwalk models walked like that... minus the flying elbow thing that one on top has going on.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Google image search 'people walking from front'. That is just what it looks like.

Seriously?

That's your dealbreaker?

JFC, anon, you're petty.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but they're cartoons, their proportions aren't natural to begin with. Also, some people are naturally very thin and have thigh gaps. It's not some invention of the patriarchy.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
... did I miss the part where the secret claims thigh gaps are an invention of the patriarchy?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Well the secret has a ridiculous amount of indignation for something that some body types come by naturally, and the majority of Disney princesses are pretty damn petite.

You don't even have to be super thin to have a thigh gap. I'm a size 10 and I have one because I have wide-set hips.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-28 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Dang! That's actually a cool thing to know, imo. I'm a size 2/4 (at 5'8") and I barely have a thigh gap, because I have really narrow set hips. Just goes to show how much of a role bone structure plays in thigh gaps. (Not that size ten is really big or anything, it's not, I just- uh- you know what I mean, right?)

The majority of the Disney princesses already have unrealistic proportions that tend towards the skinny side, so I don't understand why drawing them with thigh gaps would bother you.

I mean, don't get on fanartist's cases for something based on Disney's properties. You should go complain to Disney that we don't have more variation in body shape in their princess line.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
but it's not just the proportions, it's also the posing. Like the fact that their knees are turned inwards but heels out. And if one knee is so far behind the other, the thigh gap would probably not be visible.
These poses are not natural, they're contorted specifically for the most curviness in the hip area (because if the knees are close together, the thighs create a more obvious curve), and the thigh gap.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't talk about the posing specifically though, all they said is that if you draw the princesses with a thigh gap then that's for some reason horrible.

If they wanted to talk about artists and how they handle anatomy, they should have worded the secret differently.

Though the point still stands that these aren't supposed to be realistic drawings.

With how slender they are in canon, most of them probably would have thigh gaps. It's true that some of them may not have thigh gaps despite being slender, if they're thigh bones were very narrow-set in their pelvis, or if they genetically happened to carry a lot of their fat in their inner thighs. But on average, I think a woman that thin is likely to have a thigh gap.

But I will say the princesses in that drawing aren't particularly well drawn on the anatomical front. Like, it's not bad fanart by any means, but their legs do look awkward.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, even in the case of those who do have truly dramatic thigh gaps, the gap isn't noticeable to me except when they're specifically posing to show it off. Given the baggage attached to thigh gaps, I can see why someone would question the anatomy and poses in those drawings. The one of Belle is especially questionable IMO.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)

Huh. I notice thigh gaps all the time. I also have a minor one myself, though.

I do think in those drawings, the princesses are very curvaceous to have such large thigh gaps, though. Usually when I see someone with a really pronounced thigh gap, they're not very curvy. This artist seems like they wanted the best of both worlds (don't we all).

Good point, it seems unrealistic. But then again, the costumes are cute, the artist did a good job. I'm going to enjoy them for what they are, rather than what they aren't. I get the feeling this is fan art, not professional art, and it's not a dealbreaker for me, because 1) fan art, and 2) it's not too noticeable. I mean, yes, let's subvert body types whenever possible, but this fan artist seems to have set out to do one cute thing, and done it pretty well. Just IMO. :)

Honestly I'm not sure if it's cool to make a secret critiquing someone's art here, and showing said art...

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What about people who actually have thigh gaps? Are they dead to you too?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, but maybe people with thigh gaps could not act like they're being horribly oppressed if people don't like to see them portrayed in idealized female characters from children's cartoons. Some of us have starved ourselves trying to reach that ideal and still - no thigh gap.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--damn, I'm so glad that this is one body image issue I don't personally give a fuck about. My self esteem is close to non-existent already. Even though I suspect if I ever lost my excess weight I'd have one, because even though I'm fat I have no butt or hips to speak of. I'd rather be hourglass shaped than skinny.
