I agree. What I really hate is when people write "Tell me what you think I should have happen next in the story." How the hell should I know, I amnot the writer, you are. I am not talking about deliberate "waht should happen next" polls/ stories, I mean stories that the author is too insecure about what they write and needs audience approval.

Delta State is a fantastic show. I have been looking desperately to find episodes to rewatch. You and me, we can be the fandom.

I just wish they'd stop posting stuff from fandomsecrets on /a/.

125. That's because Legault is a sexy bitch.

130. WORD. It's like in order to be a feminist, you must cast off all typically "feminine" traits and be ashamed to be caring, nurturing, or supportive. What ever happened to being loved for who you are? Some of my favorite characters fit typical "feminine" stereotypes. Not to mention that being kickass doesn't mean you have to hide your emotions and spit like a man. You CAN be both. No, srsly.

idk, maybe it's the fact that I feel rather invalidated by feminists, because I prefer to be (sometimes, gasp, have to be, and hardly because of societal pressures!) "stereotypically" feminine. I don't mind having guys help out, sometimes I even HAVE to have them help out because I can't do it! It just seems to me that any girl that needs help or that just can't do it on her own (and it seems to be left out how in a lot of cases, girls DO serve a very vital role in the plot! They make it POSSIBLE for the "hero" to do whatever he needs to do! Their supporting roles are hardly worthless!) is slated as a "misogynistic stereotype." Well, that'd make me a "misogynistic stereotype." And I'm not entirely comfortable with that. It seems like a completely different sort of misogyny to me -- one that says "you must rebel against the system or else you're part of the problem! Oh, you can't because you're not strong enough? Oh. Well, sucks for you, you're a crappy character/person!"

145. FERN GULLY LOVE ♥ He was so cute ;D I had the biggest little girl crush on him when I was like seven.

162. So much word, anon. Wolf's Rain killed me time and time again and I kept on watching it. It was so beautiful, and I cried so much.

164. I don't even care what your secret says (especially since I don't know who she is). My question is this: Are those boobs for real?

You're right. Gender stereotypes are important to me. It's important to me that the writers, artists, and other creators avoid them. I'm not sure how that makes my misogynistic, but OK.

Q: I will never understand why people ship them.

A: They were like brother and sister.

(Hey, fandoms like that.)

110, 112, 127,157

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-06-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
110. Fraiser and Hercules! Oh, don't be ashamed to love those shows! Frasier was smart and funny, and Hercules was pure, campy fun. (I haven't seen any station rerunning Herc, and I am sad). I don't even watched the others.

112. There are lots of things in a summary that will turn me away from clicking a fanfic, and those are all included. Everyone wants reviews, but there's just something about *demanding* them that's irksome.

127. Find yourself a message board or disscussion community -- I mean, there are only a few things that I go all out "fandom" (fanfic, rp, fanart) for, but there's lots of things I like to discuss. Start a converstaion with me about "The Chronicles of Narnia" and I'll talk your ear off, though my only "fandom" participation has been a couple of fanart illustrations and the "fandom" for those books/movies frankly scares me... Even in the thing that I "fandom" intensely (the anime/manga Trigun), I've gotten into message board threads disscussing everything from ideas on the series' philosophy to the fictional ecology of the world it takes place on. I'm sure you'll find disscussion friends for the things you like if you look. Don't feel bad. Not everybody's into the "creative fandom" aspect of everything they enjoy.

157. I'm in the same boat with some of my fics. I actually wind up leaving a lot of my old work available (some of it you have to dig for, some of it's right there on ff.net)... just because people enjoy it. I may think many of my old fics are mediocre, even downright bad, but as long as I know there are people who get pleasure from them, it's like, I don't want to take away their fun. I know the feeling of going back to search for some little fic I liked at some point and being all "Wha? It's not there anymore? T_T " "Good and Bad" in fic quality is rather subjective from person to person, and sometimes I know I like cheesey fics (guilty pleasures).

Maybe this is one of the reasons I am not into "fic/author snark" sites anymore? Authors aren't "bad" just because they have some Old Shame still up on their profiles - in fact, they may be leaving them up just because they don't want to spoil the fun for the people who enjoy them.

132. Knock fucking Knock. I went to see that with my brother on Christmas Eve when it came out. He went because he liked the other Blade movies. I went because 'guh' Ryan Reynolds.

I guess his name is Reynolds because he's so hot he's like a baked potato wrapped in aluminum foil and put in the oven.

112: Saying 'please read and review' is hardly the same as saying 'comment or I'll stop posting'.

130: a) Not typically feminine =/= not female. b) of course gender stereotypes matter to me. I'm surrounded by them every day of my life, so I'm damn grateful when there's any sign that some people think outside the box when it comes to writing women.

160: Yeah, me too. :/

166: You do make an excellent point. I'm going to lol whenever I see that comm title now.

142. Countryshipping ftw! I'm all about Sweden/Finland personally

[identity profile] saya-aensland.livejournal.com 2008-06-14 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sweden/Finland would be a complicated relationship. Cause y'see, they used to be married, but Finland decided that Sweden was controlling it too much, so when Russia sauntered in, Finland ran straight into its arms.

But then it turned out Russia was an abusive jackass, so Finland broke up with it. But Finland was too proud to go back to Sweden after walking out on it, and it had a depressive, self-loathing slump (read: civil war) before straightening itself out.

Then things REALLY turned south when Russia went all "BE MINE, BITCH" and Finland was like "GAH NO". And it tried asking Sweden for help, but Sweden decided to go all tsundere by saying "This is your mess, YOU get yourself out of it", but it still subtly helped out Finland by giving it money or a place to shack when it needed it.

And when Russia finally limped away with sore family jewels, Finland had a rebound with Germany, in a misguided attempt to cope with the trauma. Well, that ended terribly, of course, and Sweden was once again there to help Finland pick up the pieces.

And now when all's said and done, Finland and Sweden are best friends and fuck buddies, who snark and insult each other, but still know the other doesn't mean it.

Complicated.

*Points to her icon* Homework for you: Define "being a girl"! OwOb

First you must understand Gender as a social construct. Who made the definition of masculine and feminine? What are those classical characteristics? Most importantly, for whom are those characteristics convenient?

The reason I like atypical girls (and I bet most of us do it for the same reason) it's because they're OUTSIDE the box. It's not mysoginism, it's all the contrary! If your intention here is to defend female characters, think of which stereotypes of femininity are you defending.

Can girls be gentle and caring? Of course they can! The problem starts when that's all they are. Look at the media in which gentle and caring female characters are predominant. Are there any males with those characteristics as well? How are they presented/regarded?

So yeah. Fandom!Feminism? YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. Inform yourself first. Read books on the topic, I'm sure you'll find them really interesting, and then you will be able to defend women and female characters with real arguments to support statements as bold as this one.
