142. Unless by "drastic step" you mean weight-loss surgery, you'll probably be fat again before too long. Most dieters gain the weight back within five years, and even WLS isn't a guarantee. The body isn't a calorimeter, it's a complex organism that's very good at adjusting to keep itself at a certain weight. So there's that.

If you're worried about your health, try to eat well as much as possible, do moderate exercise, pay attention to your family history, and don't accept it when a doctor's idea of medical treatment is, "Lose weight, you fattie." For a lot of diseases associated with fatness, telling you to lose weight is like trying to cure tuberculosis by telling you not to cough so much.

And I wish you happiness. Even if you do stay thin, flaunt that too. It's your body, love it unconditionally.

Those extra 20 pounds I'd learned to live with (and was thanking for minutely lowering my osteoporosis risk) suddenly had to go, and through absolutely no fault of their own. Genes will fuck you over royally. I could have decided not to do anything, but I really want to keep my feet.

I'd wager that knowing you have the health problem is making you feel at least as bad as the change in yourself. You've gone from being happy to being "defective," and I know that's a major mood-killer. Give it about a year (which if you had bariatric is about the right timeframe anyway), then see how you feel about yourself.
