Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

I don't think millennials are entitled per se, but I do think many of us were raised or at least partially raised in a very idealistic era, and were thrown into a darker and more cynical one. This is not a "reach for the moon... you'll still land among the stars" world, and we're dealing with the repercussions of that. Some of us better than others.

I don't think that's really wrong.

I think the central question is whether, being thrown into a dark and shitty world, you necessarily have to conclude that the darkness and shittiness is correct and inevitable. Because I don't think it is at all, and I think a lot of the reaction to being thrown into a world that works that way is basically justified.

For instance, one of the major topics here is income and wealth inequality and opportunity in the economy. And the state of affairs there is something that is the result of concrete choices that have been made and systems that have been built - not something that is a result of some kind of natural process that we just have to take as a given.

So that would be my point of view.

It's not even 'you'll still land among the stars', it's 'you can't even afford the gas to drive to the rocket to get to space, let alone aiming for the moon'.

Many of us did everything 'right' to prepare - extracurriculars, degrees, certifications, and we're still waiting to start adult lives with these things older folks said we'd 'need'.

Millennials sure got alot of burdens, if they are freely open with entitlement....

I'm technically a millennial, a really early one, but was raised by people who grew up either getting bombed or during the Great Depression, so it's never been idealism and "reach for the moon!" It's been "You never know when things are gonna go arse-up, that's why we have a drawer full of sugar packets and all our grocery bags going back twenty years. Also, go into accounting. It's stable."

I kinda feel you, anon. I remember all my teachers saying that all we needed were smarts and a college degree to succeed. I had some who would tell misbehaving kids that they'd never do better than McDonald's and disparaged all jobs that weren't white collar. My parents were the ones who were more realistic. Yes, they did encourage me to go to college and aim for a professional career, but they also told me that there was no shame in an honest day's work and to never think I was too good for any job. I did everything "right", but I couldn't get a job in my chosen field and got a job to pay off my loans. It's disappointing, but not the end of the world. For some of my friends who got the idealistic speech at both home and school. It's been a lot harder for them. Even though they're being productive members of society, they feel like failures who've hit the end of the line.

I can't stand job snobbery.

If we didn't have people who drove garbage trucks and maintained sewers, we'd be living in our own filth.

this is an excellent point.

I think you're onto something. Gen Z has grown up in darkness and cynicism, and they're a lot more laid back about it. They're pretty fun, actually.

The only thing wrong with millennials is the big chip on the shoulder some of them have regarding older generations.

Well, to be fair, some members of the older generations seem to go out of their way to justify that chip.

How so?

By relentlessly bitching about These Entitled Little Brats These Days and how Useless And Lazy They All Are and how when they were that age, they had a great job at the factory AND were married with 2 kids AND owned their own house and the Kids These Days just don't want to work for anything because OBVIOUSLY if they would just go out and talk to a few managers, they too could be homeowners supporting a stay home spouse and several kids on a single income by age 25. When that isn't even remotely how it works anymore, and in fact there are several extremely good reasons, not related to "entitlement" or "laziness," why many people under 35 are taking longer to hit the milestones that previous generations deem required steps to "real" adulthood. Chief among them being the terrible, terrible job market which in no wise is the fault of anyone except the older generations who are running it.l

Ah right.

Well, millennials aren't kids anymore. And the younguns coming up behind them appear to be more independent and less focused on their victimhood. Should be interesting to see how millennials react when they're 30, strapped with education debt, and living with their parents, and all the 18-year-olds around them have jobs.

A lot of millennial are already 30. The oldest ones are 37 and actually quite a lot of them now have jobs and houses and kids.

As someone who is a 'millennial', all this, seriously.

If you think any living generational cohort is sitting comfortably after the collapse of the financial and housing markets, the deconstruction of the government safety net, the erosion of the informal and private sector safety nets, and a health care system in crisis, well, you're just plain wrong and likely an asshole.

Sure, but I think it's safe to say that if you're dragging millions of people over a bad customer service experience, you're probably an asshole.

is there a specific incident you are thinking of here?

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-12 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's a certain genre of comment that runs, "I got stuck in line behind a baby boomer who paid with a check! They're so entitled." Or "I got stiffed on a tip by an older person. Baby boomers are so entitled."

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
You're really sheltered

Try my entire family doing this because they have had long-term jobs for fifty years and haven't had to even think about looking for one in the current climate. But no, I'm not disabled, I'm fuckin' lazy.

So yeah, there's definitely entitled fuckin' Baby Boomers out there and you need to stop whiteknighting them just because you want to be an honorary member.

A quarter of the adults over 40 in my family have been unemployed or underemployed for most of the last year. I think your family are likely "really sheltered." Job hunting is tough at any age these days. Good luck.

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, anyone whose entire family has had a long-term jobs for fifty years has no fucking business calling anyone else sheltered.
