Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

Things that aren't secrets or that you're too lazy to make into a secret or that you just feel like talking about, whatever, go wild

Most of the changes in fandom culture over the last 10 years have very little to do with anything specific to fandom or the people in it. Fandom has changed in the same ways as the rest of the Internet and for the same reasons that the Internet has generally changed.

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a controversial opinion?

I've never heard anyone say "fandom has changed" and mean "fandom has changed so much in its own little corner whereas the rest of the internet has stayed the same." Is it not a given that the internet has changed, but the changes in fandom being spoken about is the specific topic at hand?

When women cosplay as male characters there is always something very weird and off putting with the way they look.

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How so?

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So true! For me it's the body type. I'd love to cosplay male characters, but I have big boobs and wide hips, and it just doesn't look right (even with binders).

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the character and the cosplayer.

There's a lot of androgynous-looking anime characters, for example, and a woman with a similar body type can pull those off really well, as I've seen I've seen it done.

Re: Controversial/Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
eh...I wouldn't say always. I have passed a significant number of times and know plenty of others who have (but then, most of us many years later identify as trans so...? take that as you will).

but I get you when the woman in question is applying makeup too thickly or incorrectly, not binding convincingly, not tailoring the costume to fit a less curvy body shape, etc. there are a lot of people who don't understand why they're not passing.

You can objectively agree that a writer's work is flawed without accusing them of being greedy and all about the money, AND also feel that other than those flaws, they're damn good writers. You don't have to either be an unapologetic fan or a butthurt "fan" who calls the writers money grabbing assholes because your ship didn't happen.

I don't think millennials are entitled per se, but I do think many of us were raised or at least partially raised in a very idealistic era, and were thrown into a darker and more cynical one. This is not a "reach for the moon... you'll still land among the stars" world, and we're dealing with the repercussions of that. Some of us better than others.

They'll keep going as long as people keep paying, and people do.

So there's a few people in the SW sequel fandom, mostly Finn/Poe shippers, who like to imagine and write that Poe and Muran (a member of his squadron, mentioned in Before the Awakening and who gets killed before Poe joins the Resistance) were in a relationship - or even married.

This makes me feel uncomfortable, because Poe was Rapier Squadron's leader and Muran was Rapier Four - which makes Poe Muran's direct commander. Them dating would be fraternization at best, and at worst dubious/non-consensual (Muran had to obey Poe's order). There would def be a power imbalance. And it seems like no soul in fandom ever stopped and thought "wait would Poe do that?"

I miss sitcoms. The only comedy anymore seems to be dramedies - this includes shows I actually love, such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but I miss silly comedies that had minimal serious humor and were mostly just fun. I unfortunately don't really like the comedies that do seem to still exist.

Unchecked capitalism is largely a force for evil. I'm not sure capitalism was ever inherently good. The history of capitalism is littered with too many robber barons, children in coal mines and the likes, human rights abuses, and selfishness, hoarding, cruelty, and evil. Is there a better system? I think if there isn't, humankind won't survive.

Careful regulation...fair laws and humane labor policies...if these were implemented, capitalism could perhaps have something more and better to offer the world. But the one percent having most of it, the destruction of world resources and waste involved in the need to "grow" the GDP / economy (no matter the cost to humans and the world), that's all pretty awful

I believe the world was once guided by the feminine and would be better if we could all return to that mindset. Men are too unstable to have as much power as they do. The idea that everything must be fought for, the battle for supremacy, the jostling for position, and taking advantage of the weak...

We need women in power, and soon. Power should be used to help people and take care...not to conquer and abuse, not to make yourself look big or hoard wealth. I don't think that merely being a woman means you can always avoid that mindset, it's very ingrained. I don't think Hillary would actually have governed from the sort of feminine perspective I'm talking about.

But I do think it's necessary, badly needed, and may be the only way forward that doesn't involve massive wars and destroying the world. I do think that men can have this attitude and gentleness, but I don't see it very often, and almost never in those in charge.

I would be totally for Men's Rights Activists and MGTOW if they actually focused on things that would help men, rather than how evil women are. For instance, fighting the awful parts of toxic masculinity, sticking up for male rape victims, dealing with issues that affect men (and there are many) from loneliness, health issues, emotional problems related to the poor way boys are taught to "become men" etc. Things like child leave and stay at home dads, too. And if the MGTOW wanted to go their own way...that would be awesome. The straight people dating pool would be filled only with men who actually like women and don't think they're scum!

I also think that the MRA types really think things through. They want a return to some kind of mythic power that they're supposedly losing (although I really wish there was more evidence they were), but if they lived in that world, they'd probably have to get married and be the sole provider for a wife and a bunch of kids. Mostly they seem like they'd absolutely hate that sort of responsibility, no matter the power over other people that came with it.

The current trend/idea of "fiction affects reality so we have to crack down on all these people who have bad ships because they are normalizing bad things" just... completely annoys me. Like don't get me wrong I know fiction does affect reality. But the way people are using this fact often comes down to harassing harmless people because there could be some harmful people among them. " Better dox them all and get them fired from their jobs to make sure."

And honestly? the people who think they need to hunt down everyone who ships a "bad ship" are more dangerous than the people who like "bad ships" in the first place.

And like you can say "anon that's a common opinion" but for some reason, I feel like I'm always running into people with this mindset in fandom spaces. And they're fucking creepy.

I wish more people could enjoy and create fanworks for subtext pairings, without constantly having to have a go at the creators for "oppressing them" because their ship isn't canon. Like, I'd love it if everything I watched/read/etc was catered perfectly to my desires, too. But, realistically, I know that will never happen. I don't see the point in being mean to another human being just because we have different ideas in re: "which fictional characters should be fucking each other."
