Things you straight up do not get.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't a thread for you to gloat about how dumb other people are (ex "i don't get why it's so hard for people to drive correctly!!" or "why is it so hard for people to be nice to service staff?!?!"), it's a thread about what your dumbass cannot comprehend no matter how many times it's explained to you.

Religion. This isn't to say that religious people are dumb, more that I'm incapable of wrapping my head around the idea of religious faith in any shape or form and I've resigned myself to shrugging and assuming there's something fundamentally different between religious people and me.

have you never subscribed to one at all, anon, not even forced in childhood?

having formerly been ye olde born again and now atheist, I can definitely see some trends in my own personality that made me susceptible. For one, like a vast majority of Americans, I was indoctrinated as a child. Being dragged to church weekly and catechism almost weekly, for many years, puts it into your head the same as going to school daily - someone is trying to teach you the thing and a lot of people absorb the thing. Not all of them, but a great many, and it becomes rote even if they don't actually believe the things they're being taught. I'd venture to say that a large portion of people in the US only identify as religious out of habit. Habitual behavior is extremely powerful.

The other reason I often see, and what was true for me, was addictive personality traits + being bullied in school. When your life is actual shit, someone offering a magic way to feel better (which, you don't find out until years of experience does not actually make you feel better) is very appealing. Then pile onto that an addictive personality, and things just sort of snowball from there. It takes pulling yourself out of the routine to start thinking about whether any of it makes sense or really is helping, and to realize that somebody just got you addicted to fuzzy Jesus feelings instead of caffeine or alcohol.

I'm with you, anon - the whole 'leap of faith' thing in religion that basically tells you to ignore anything your rational mind says, and science says, for some nebulous 'divinity' that ....does stuff is just weird.

I've never understood it, and the people who really get into that make me recoil.

You and me both, anon. I just don't get how people can believe so intensely in something that we have no proof exists at all.

Re: Things you straight up do not get.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. For me, believing in a religion is literally as impossible as believing in, say, the Easter bunny. My capacity for religious belief is zero, period.

How 3.3(repeating) times 3 equals 1 and not 9.9(repeating). Or rather, why 9.9(repeating) = 1 and not the closest possible number to 1.

Yes, it's been explained to me. Yes, I get that the only way to write 1/3 in numerals has to be 3.3(repeating), and so it has to by definition equal 1 when tripled. But I can't wrap my brain around why it doesn't ALSO indicate something that is not quite 1.

Re: Things you straight up do not get.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
not the closest possible number to 1.

But there's no such thing as the closest possible number to 1

I mean, conceptually, what exactly would that mean

Oh, I KNOW. It took me about a week of arguing with the math guy at work before it hit me. think I mentioned it here on FS when I found out.

Lol just to demonstrate how much I suck at math, I accidentally wrote 3.3 and 9.9 instead of... 0.3 and 0.9. That's probably indicative of a bigger problem hah.

This is one of those few abstract math concepts that actually does make sense to me. Or rather, most explanations don't make sense, but the idea that if I have infinite 0.9s they just equal a 1 does.

My answer to the OPs question would be, almost any kind of complicated math stuff. I'm good at basic geometry, but anything more than that and I'm lost. I took algebra 1+2 in high school and I'm really not sure how I passed at all because once we hit square roots and graphs and shit I had no idea what was going on at all. But in my defense I'm pretty sure I have dyscalculia.

Excessive. Not in a snobby "u is not a word" way (although I used to be like that before I realized people were serious, and not just being silly). If it's used a lot in one sentence or paragraph, I can't process it. I read "u" as the letter "u", "ur" as the ancient city of Ur and at some point my brain just stops translating "u" to "you" and "ur" to "your" or "you are."

I get it in general, abstract theory but every time I try to think about it in detail, the vastness of space is something my brain ties itself in knots over.

The difference between friendship and romance. I'm aromantic so I only know the friendship aspect but from what I've observed the only difference appears to be the physical stuff. No one's been able to explain it in a way that makes sense.

Anything to do with music theory. I don't understand keys, don't understand timing, don't understand chords, none of it. I am just a monkey who likes it when the noises sound good.

It kinda sucks cause everyone in my family besides me is at least casually a musician, and I love musicals and stuff, but I can't understand music past a very surface level.

I do not get how people can like music that is not pleasing to the ear (such as loud, atonal forms of punk, grunge, metal, and even rap). Liking that kind of music is as unfathomable to me as liking the sound of a toddler vigorously banging metal pots and pans together.

Yes, I am aware that people have different tastes. That's why I'm not saying people who like that kind of music have something wrong with them. I'm just saying I don't get it in the least.

That probably thing about when you're picking from three doors, that after one door you supposedly don't have a 50/50 chance with the two that are left. I can't explain it well but that's because my dumb ass cannot comprehend it.

Reading sheet music.

I was in band for three years in middle school. I played clarinet and baritone TC. I can't read music notes on the fly.

I have to write the note letter above the music lines with octaves being different colors before I can play it. My band directors got on to me for doing it that way.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star would look something like this:
C C G G / A A G2 / F F E E / D D C2 / G G F F / E E D2 / G G F F / E E D2
