Re: What fandom trends do you dislike?

Well, fandom spaces are female dominated so yeah, and it's usually m/m slash in question.

I can agree to some extent that slash fangirls can occasionally be gross and over the top, and it's obnoxious when they act like they are practically gay themselves or at least mega activists because they masturbate to gay pairings. And I can understand a gay dude not being comfortable with that, and obviously a gay dude really can't fetishize m/m pairings... or rather, they can, but that's the freaking point. But a little bit funny, in my opinion, to exclude "nonbinary" identified individuals from fetishizing gay people by shipping m/m.

Antis

Politicization of shipping preferences and shipping "slacktivism."

Oh yes, agreed. I mean, fandom is the place to blab your opinions about the series, and those opinions don't always have to be "positive". But if you go out of your way to make shippers feel bad about their ship, you are crossing a line. Some people seem to get so much joy out of hating a character/ship and raining on everyone else's parade.

Nope.

Never wanted them as a kid, still don't want them at nearly 30. I've never liked children much, babies even less and every time someone tells me 'I'll change my mind' it only strengthens my resolve to not have them because fuck me I will prove you wrong.

I'd also be a horrible parent and I would never want to inflict that on a child.

He still wouldn't look like that now even if he didn't fuck up his face with plastic surgery and boxing.

What about seeing this from people who ship slash??? implying the gross cishets "need to stop" while of course every thought had by queer teenagers is perfectly unproblematic

True. My point has been that attacking teens with a few hundred followers for shipping the wrong thing isn't a meaningful form of political activism.

Also annoying as fuck. People can ship whatever gender combination they want, and others need to get over it. And I'm gay, though a gay woman, so I simultaneously can and can't ship m/m without shame. :)

man, judging by the responses in this thread, things ain't looking great for the next gen future of f!s hahaha

I've heard this a lot lately in comments on FS, and I don't get it. In the shows I watch, this trope doesn't pop up frequently.

Also, I'm a fortysomething with no kids and no intention to have kids, and I'm fine with that decision and don't feel pressured, least of all by media. You could try taking some responsibility for your own emotions rather than feeling upset if your life doesn't resemble a TV show. You could also try not giving a rat's ass about what any asshole is "pressuring" you to think or do. You might find life is a little more pleasant that way, rather than expecting everyone else around you to change.

Tropes are always lazy writing. They're not some super evil form of mass socialization as people make them out to be.

It's good because we'll have the free time to shitpost. Probably.

people being afraid to write characters making shitty decisions and fucking up. I love my OTP but I don't think they're perfect. I don't even like darkfic, and it seems like the most people willing to write something that isn't fluffy want to write intense hurt/comfort stuff that realllly isn't my thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like money and life experience is even stronger than "biological clock". Who would want to bring a new life into such a shitty, overpopulated world if they can barely afford to take care of themselves? Accidents aside, people make the decision too lightly far too often.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Dangers? I think you mean aesthetics.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Wrong. That's like saying bread sucks because it contains flour. It's how they're used not the use themselves that constitutes lazy writing.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. My answer for people screeching that question at me is usually "I would need to have sex first for that to happen."

*bread is lazy baking

How they're used?

As a child I just assumed I would have a boyfriend later, get married, have two kids, because that's what was considered normal development where I grew up.

I never got to the part of actually wanting those things, so I never did anything to make them happen.

We're actually in a baby bust cycle right now.

Never had them, never wanted them, haven't changed my mind.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
In all fairness, if one waited until they were completely financially stable and had the time and money to have kids... there's a good chance they'd already be too old to have them, at least biologically.

Having kids is a big decision and shouldn't be taken lightly, but it's not a bad thing to want or have kids responsibly. Anyway, there's a difference between having a kid at 19 when you work part time at a gas station, and at 32 when you still struggle to make ends meet at work but at least have a career and a plan for the future.

I've seen first-hand how my mother tries to use power plays and manipulation when it comes to my sister's baby. I never really wanted kids anyway, but knowing I'd have to deal with that pretty much seals the deal.

My boyfriend and I might foster or adopt, maybe some older kids. I think that would be a good thing to do.
