There's a LOT of laziness in these fields.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah - I haven't seen Selma so I don't know about this specific portrayal of him, and I won't say he did nothing good, but LBJ was a creep.

Also Ava Duverny didn't even write Selma.

I guess to me seeing a "sexualized" outfit (which she doesn't wear all the time) doesn't equal "male gaze". General fanservice exists, and as I said, she doesn't dress sexy all the time.

I don't think this is true? Her wikipedia says she attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, but she'd been working both in various odd jobs and as an actress before NCIS.

Is this a thing that happens? Honest question, I've genuinely never encountered this unless it's a scene where we're not meant to understand (ie character only speaks English, ends up somewhere surrounded by people who only speak Chinese, so the subtitle say "speaking Chinese" because character can't understand a word and "speaking Chinese" is all they can hear).

Get discs with Spanish dubs + subs?

As someone who watched two seasons of Star Trek Voyager dubbed it German for that very purpose. And yes, yes it helped.

Or, you know, some of our shit really was shit back in the day, and still objectively embarrassing if it were tied to us IRL.

He was a creep.

And also, viet-fuckin-nam.

What a bizarre secret. I've seen, er, certain folks cheering that A Wrinkle in Time flopped because Duvernay is the "real racist" or book fans being disappointed in how the movie turned out, but the LBJ stan reason is the dumbest reason I've seen so far seen.

Netflix though

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Netflix though has an issue where sometimes their subs will replace subs that do translate the language with it gets quitebad in documentaries and quite funny when thwy sub something like "sayonara" as but less funny if you need the captions

I agree that just "sexualized" =/= "male gaze", but I think "objectified" is a lot closer in that regard.

And yeah, again, I don't really have a sense of how it plays out in the show at all!

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Given the specific dynamics of the original LBJ Selma controversy, and assuming that this is a real secret (which it probably isn't), I would suspect that it wasn't unrelated to the "real racist" argument.

Just go with it's a boring typical CBS crime procedural as the reason you avoid it and leave it at that.

It can border on a humblebrag, but to get your dander up over it?

Kinda inspired by #2

Who are your favorite and least favorite presidents (or your country’s equivalent) from before you were born?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The fuck is up with people on here? Do you all not know how to hide emotions??

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-03-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd buy this argument a bit more if the entire genre didn't routinely take liberties with characters and conflicts for the sake of enhancing drama. Paul Webb wasn't the worst offender in Hollywood history writing that script.

Warren G Harding was the fucking worst, fuck that dude.

Abraham Lincoln was pretty cool? Richard Nixon was a pretty big jerk. I don't really know much about presidents from before I was born.

Richard Nixon was a jerk.

I don't watch it on the regular (my parents do, so I watch it if it's on while I'm over at their place), but I never really got the impression she was made as male-gazey or even fan service? Like... she just comes across as the quirky forensic scientist to me.

Though I love her interactions with whatshisface, the older guy. Gibbs?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-21 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak to recent seasons (I only watched syndicated reruns of early seasons on USA and the like) but...for a large chunk of the series run there is absolutely zero fanservice and no, she's not portrayed as sexy. Her schtick is "quirky." She was supposed to be basically odd man out among a bunch of suits.

Wait what? Lucy/Aslan? Like, pedobestiality?

The BIGGEST jerk. But a great voice for mocking.
