I still love seeing this sort of cultural goof crop up in stories, because you're right, OP-- it is heartwarming. It's like the creator really internalized those characters from another culture into their own heart, and I can't help but love that. <3

I love that this attitude is increasing, just joyfully accepting the fact that people experience fiction through the lens of the world they live in and that has an effect on their fic writing. And everyone being willing to explore that. Instead of cornering people with condescending lectures on all the nitpicky things they're doing wrong.

I'm American and I do have tea and biscuits. :P

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto, but I'm pretty sure we're in the minority of Americans who do...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that owl mug.

But yes, I like that type of cultural mistake too. I like imagining Steve & Bucky (or whoever) having tea & biscuits whilst wearing jumpers.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I want that mug. And yup, I totally agree, OP. It's just so endearing.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I might find it okay if British fic readers didn't throw such a shit fit when they see American writers "bastardizing" fic based on British works with their filthy Americanisms.

+!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I spent time in the HP fandom and people would get up on their high horses so much...

Then the first Fantastic Beasts comes out and oh how the turn tables.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
If it's the exact same people doing both things, then sure. But if it's not, then I'm not going to hold it against them because I'm not an asshole.

ODFOD

I don't mind a few goofs.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But 'mum' rather than 'mom' does take me right out of the story - that particular one just always jars me.

And, if the story is centered around a baby or a car, it's very distracting - the UK and US have different terms for so many things.

Re: I don't mind a few goofs.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I will use "Mom" if I write in American setting, or call the train line a "subway" rather than the underground, etc., but I won't change my spelling for words like "colour" or "realise". I know I'll only bugger it up and write them the proper way the next time anyway, and I won't catch it because it's not wrong to my eyes.

Re: I don't mind a few goofs.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt but I'd just write it your way, then do a find and replace when you're finished.

Re: I don't mind a few goofs.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I don't mind the spelling differences for a word that sounds the same, but 'mum' is pronounced differently from 'mom'.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Cute mug.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on how many such slip-ups occur. I am an American who commonly writes British characters, and while I know I make some mistakes, I work hard to write them IN CHARACTER which means including their vocab, mannerisms, behaviors, etc. I expect the same from British writers writing American characters. If it seems like NO effort was made, then I am not going to enjoy or read that fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm okay with most slip-ups but even if you think most Americans have tea and biscuits, I would think it would strike you as OOC for (as an example) the Winchesters, who've gone 13 seasons without ever mentioning it, to casually sit down for high tea.

Yet Brits flip shit if any American fanfic writer makes a similar cultural mistake.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
My theory is because of the stereotype thar Americans aren't bothered to investigate a culture other than their own.

We don't have a hive mind. Your chip on shoulder about this is bloody annoying.
Americans need to stop raping our culture and expecting us to be forelock-tuggingly grateful.

Idk, certain British stuff like this kinda really bugs me when it comes to certain fandoms. Like, as someone who’s not white but still a US citizen, reading a Mexican or Cuban character having tea and biscuits or some very obvious British thing is suuuuuper fucking jarring.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Now I'm curious - what's the Mexican/Cuban equivalent of a light social snack?

Americans do have biscuits and tea... but it would be scone-like leavened biscuits and sweet tea :P
