Are you an ace? Because otherwise I don't understand this secret. Do gay/lesbian characters not have chemistry and sexual tension?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Presumably, OP has a certain understanding of what "sexual tension" means, and Reylo doesn't fall into that understanding, and OP thinks that this is because Reylo fans are straight whereas OP is (presumably) not, and both groups' ideas of what constitute sexual tension are linked to their sexual identity.

Are you an idiot?

There is literally only one scene in canon that can be read as remotely sexual (hehe, "remotely" is right): the one where Kylo Ren is shirtless, and Rey is distracted. But even that one can be read as revulsion, or just Rey being unused to seeing other human beings naked, perhaps even herself -- not too many mirrors in her sandy home.

Every other scene shows that Kylo Ren is in Rey's head, pulling at her, making her think about him. So when you ask, "Is Rey fascinated with Kylo Ren?" I say YES! Because that part is canon, and that alone.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Chemistry is in the eye of the beholder.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, IMO Reylo have the sexual chemistry of a candle and a stick of deodorant but "chemistry" is almost completely subjective. I don't see the point in getting smug about how a ship doesn't have chemistry because maybe it doesn't to you, but the people who ship it obviously think differently, so what does it matter?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, why can't the str8s get onto the chemistry levels that LGBT people see in gay couples like Coulson/Clint or Lestrade/Mycroft?????

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what people's sexual identity has to do with it.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sexual identities in contemporary society are linked to specific subcultural expressions that we can talk meaningfully about, even while still realizing that it's not contiguous with the spectrum of sexual identities in its totality.

I'm a lesbian and I don't get straight chemistry in movies 95% of the time. I see people mention amazing chemistry and I'm like, oh... that's it? While a little spark of chemistry between two female characters makes me ears perk up like a dog who saw a squirrel.

There's some kind of subculture where people believe straight couples are only together because they don't know better and scream at each other and call it love and that same sex couples are perfect and free of abuse.

Like straight people have their heteronormative annoyances and may put themselves into boxes without thinking if they want or enjoy it but imagining same sex couples have no problems isn't helpful or true.

Though I can see what OP means, you are right. It's a trend on tumblr/twitter that if you are straight or white you're opinions are not valid and frequently delusional.

I agree there is no sexual tension between Reylo but being straight has nothing to do with it.

I’ve shipped a couple of similar ships with a kind of similar dynamic and a lot of the same fans, and I still, well, I won’t say “don’t get” Reylo, because, again, I can see the similar framing and stuff. I just love my fucked up het heroine/villain ships, but somehow still loathe Reylo.

Don't assume it's something wrong with you, OP.

Plenty of straight and bi people don't see any chemistry between those two either.

Fictional chemistry and sexual tension, to me, is pretty subjective. Doesn't matter what type of ship. Some people will see chemistry and some people won't.

I stared at this for about two minutes before I realized it was a crappy Reylo picture and not a crappy Zuko/Azula one. For a crowd of shippers who claim their dude's the world's most beautiful man, they sure do lack fan artists who are willing to draw him as anything other than generic dark-haired emo boy #7.

...huh. This was a comment of mine, almost verbatim, but I didn't make this secret. Oh well.

What I meant when I said it was that we live in such a heteronormative culture that the mere act of putting a man and a woman on screen together in a connected plot seems to end up with people talking about chemistry and sexual tension when there...isn't, or at least not objectively (see also: Mon-el and Kara in Supergirl. I never got "sexy chemistry" out of that either). Ship what you wanna ship, for sure, but most shippers at least have the sense to admit it's what they WANT, not what's necessarily there. The point is that most of the time with straight ships in media, the writers can just put them on screen together and skip the actual relationship but it will still be seen as canon and steamy romance.

Versus with gay/lesbian ships in media, there are relatively so few and it's still such a big huge deal to have anything at all that the material has to explicitly state a romance or the audience will assume there is none. Shippers, obviously, will still do as they like, but as a bisexual person, it's a very different watching a straight relationship play out with solely visual cues and silent emotions and a gay relationship having to be done in blatantly spoken terms.

My comment was never meant to be a bash on straight people, just to say that...I don't get it, man.

What I think is funny about this picture is that it looks like Kylo is looking intently at Rey for a reaction but she's just...not actually looking at him. Her eyes are pointing down to his chest but I get the impression of someone looking into the middle distance and not really seeing anything.

Which maybe kind of fits since that's Kylo trying to get her to come be on his side and she's Just Not Into That Dark Side First Order Stuff.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-11 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
maybe it's just that Reylo fans think every bit of tension between these two characters is "sexual" (see: that dumb womb/space jizz tumblr post)

Statements like this just make me roll my eyes back to last milennium. What does this even mean.

Bonus GLOW Season 2 Spoilers

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-07-11 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's sexual tension there. Unfortunately Kylo is the sort of guy who sends you all these awkward messages saying, "I'm fucked up because everyone has betrayed MY FEELS" before doing something horrible, like trading meth for blowjobs, or shooting up a newspaper office. He's not even a NiceGuy(tm), and he makes the "Thanos did nothing wrong" conversations about philosophical Pragmatism look good in comparison. The chemistry is less acid/base and more like an adolescent experimenting with fireworks laced with dogshit. He's one of those dudes who are in desperate need of being punched in the face, or exiled somewhere where they can deal with their own shit.

By funny comparison, I got to the hospital scene in GLOW season 2. Debbie, whose personal life is falling apart in spite of being a relatively rich white woman who takes every advantage offered without giving much back, gets stressed out, gets coked up, and breaks Ruth's leg in the middle of a match. At the hospital, Debbie gets into a shouting match with Ruth consisting of classic non-apologies and excuses for her shitty behavior. (To be fair, Ruth is a dumpster fire, but her bad life choices are only a small part of Debbie's problems.)

Kylo is still in that, "you made me kill you, father" stage of self-justification.

Yeah, "chemistry" is extremely subjective. I never found them to have any sort of chemistry because Kylo acts like a petulant child and Rey is extremely naive.
