I mean, yeah. There's a nearly endless stream of incredibly stupid shit on Twitter (and on social media more broadly) (and, indeed, in life more broadly). I love Twitter a lot, but I would never recommend that anyone use it without being very aggressive in terms of controlling the content they see - being selective about who they follow, turning off peoples' retweets, muting people and topics, blocking where necessary, all of those things.

But, I mean, yeah. It's definitely frustrating as hell but I also think like... that's kind of how people are and society is, you know?

I know tumblr is terrible, but somehow I've always considered twitter fandom way worse. I think it's somehow how it's less organized and people can be more fanatic without condemnation.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Specifically without a collective condemnation.

I think twitter is only slightly more tolerable because it's easier to avoid drama. Whereas tumblr it will show up in search in tags no matter what. You have to follow certain blogs and download extra extensions like tumblr savior AND xkit to make it tolerable.

People don't have to like Ruby Rose being cast....harassing her, no.

I hate it myself, but it's too bad how she's being treated.

I don't really get why people are so adamant about defending Gunn. If a teacher made any of his pedo jokes, they'd be fired, no questions asked. No matter how long ago or what their current belief set is. And he worked for a family friendly company that values their public image and monopolistic hold on mainstream culture above all else. Why should he be held to a lower standard?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because nobody gave a shit about his old tweets until butthurt Trump supporters dug it up to get revenge on the "libcucks".

And please spare me the pure family friendly Disney bullshit. It's as corrupt as every other billion dollar company who doesn't actually give a fuck about your "think of the children" mentality as much as it cares about what's in their parents wallets.

The way I understand it is that Gunn made the jokes in 2009, when it was his "thing" to be an offending edgelord and this reputation earned him his spot on the Guardians director's chair. Disney knew what they were doing hiring him and the tweets were even addressed publicly in 2012. Gunn apologized then and Disney did nothing. Then suddenly in 2018 when alt-right attacks Gunn for his anti-Trump comments, Disney decides to act?

People defending Gunn are most likely allowing people to change for better and against alt-right's targeted attacks of using the left's morality against itself. Disney firing Gunn was either a misguided pr move riding on the me too movement or/and their board of directors is consisted of republican Trump lobbyists.

Gunn was specifically targeted by alt-right trolls, not because they were actually offended by tasteless jokes he made years ago, but because he's an effective advocate for progressive causes. It's not about defending one guy's personal honor, it's about shining a light on this tactic and not letting it get any legitimacy.

Teachers are always held to higher standards...and even that isn't necessarily fair. Lots of people have made dumb/mean-spirited/edgy jokes in the past. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be allowed to grow and learn and do better.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
A teacher would be fired for those jokes because a teacher interacts directly with children on a daily basis. Their primary professional role is the care and education of children. The director of Guardians of the Galaxy does not interact with children on a daily basis, and his primary professional role has nothing to do with the care and education of anyone, regardless of how family friendly the parent company's image is.

Whether you believe he deserved to be fired or not, that was an incredibly stupid comparison.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
No matter how long ago or what their current belief set is.

I fundamentally disagree with that mindset. People need to be allowed to grow and change. All of us have learned - or will learn - from past mistakes and hopefully make changes for the better. I think the "current belief set" is the most important thing.

If the only reason he was fired was because Disney is "family friendly", why did Disney hire him in the first place, given that he made the tweets long before they made that choice?

Me neither. It seems pretty hypocritical to me, but saying so will make most people on this comm froth at the mouth.

The problem is that Disney knew about the tweets. Gunn had apologized for them. If they really bothered Disney, they should have asked him to take them down, but the apology was enough. Then some 'muh family values' shithead brings them up again and even though things were already cool between Disney and Gunn, they decide to attack him anyway. Over something that was already resolved. Fuck Disney.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-16 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Because Disney is being hypocritical. They would have known about Gunn when they hired him. A rightwinged asshole digs up the tweets from years before and they suddenly get cold feet and fire him.
People are adamant about defending Gunn because everyone is adamant that he has changed.
Yes, the jokes were sick but they were in the past and he is allowed to grow as a person, I know that must be hard for you to understand, OP. People can change. This is part of the theme of the Guardian of the Galaxy films.
Also, your teacher comparison isn't a direct correlation. A teacher works directly with children. James Gunn makes films. I would also question whether a teacher who made pedo jokes years ago and has been clean ever since would be fired. Severely reprimanded, sure.
Making a joke doesn't make someone a bad person. It makes him a bit of an idiot, sure.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well I guess that's what happens when people have a platform. People complain about every fucking thing under the sun. Either bitching about every little thing or "woe is me I'm so depressed".

Social media really made me lose every bit of faith in humanity.

I dunno...you can filter that crap out, or just ignore it, really; it (social media) *has* given a lot of people who were/are isolated and lonely a voice, even if it's just to bitch about something.

Not a terrible thing, in the long wrong, no matter who obnoxious it may be.

I still haven't seen a transcript of exactly what was said by whom in the Price/Fries situation, so I have no understanding of what went down. Any links you happen to know of with more information than the Buzzfeed/etc. summaries?
