146. ... I WILL NEVER UNSEE THAT.

158. Another brilliant comparison. That's a very good analogue. Mostly I end up just saying "The Remus/Tonks relationship could have been interesting if Remus and Tonks had actually been in it.

171. Oh god it was hot. Right up until he put the goggles on, they were better as a headband thing.

Too Big 3. FANDOM HATED IT? WHAT THE HELL? I JUST ABOUT SOBBED AT THE END.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! that IS fandom related.

146 - Fuck off, Ouran is totally lame, particularly in comparison to the fucking awesomeness of Diana Wynne Jones.

169 - lkajsdlkjfasdfl BSC SECRET! I REMEMBER THAT BOOK!

N!S4 - Quite frankly, no. On a superficial level you could describe the characters that way, but they're very different. Weiss Kreuz is so amazingly wonderfully scattered and incoherent, especially when you put it next to something so layered as Saiyuki.

Oh, and Stephanie Miller Show secret FTW!

The truth is: if Zaraki ever wanted a blowjob from you, he'd get it without even thinking about whether you "would consider giving" it. There's no one else in control when he's around.

134. I can sort of see your point, and it's a sad side-effect of the whole boy-girl divide.. It's everywhere, but in sexual things the gap is huge. *sigh* I admit, having a guy read my work is kind of daunting—they're closer to the source. What if a convention I'm fond of gets nixed? :\ But I feel the same way in other things where my knowledge isn't close enough to a mastery to suit me. It's only in this case that I can't get personal knowledge, and... yeah, awkward. And then there's the worry that they won't take me seriously, because I'm "just a girl". Enough guys IRL have pulled that card that even the risk of it makes me feel weird. Yaoi is supposed to be girl-safe. At least, in my head it is. I am a female in a female-empowered place, which tbh is a pretty damn rare thing to find IRL sometimes. It's comforting. The addition of a guy throws that balance off.

Really, it's all just reason piled on reason, and all of them have more to do with playground "we don't play with girls" (unstated: unless those girls act like "one of the guys") associations than anything consciously decided as an adult.

On the other hand, exposure is pretty much the only cure. There's no reason to feel awkward around guys, and female-friendly shouldn't mean male-unfriendly. We really don't need female-only or male-only things. It only causes problems, and reinforced real-life insecurities. (Is our safe space so delicate that even a single Y chromosome could damage it? I hope not, but sometimes I fear...)

tl;dr, response! What I do is just go "people=people" online and try not to think of gender too much. That seems to help. It may create sort of a strange mental image of the person based loosely on their name, unless I have something else to go on, but at least the whole gender issue is less of an issue.

135. That would be... well, interesting, to put it mildly. I could really do without Offler though. I think they still do human sacrifice. Eep!

160. A slasher who qualified for the Olympics. I feel obscurely proud. We are everywhere! :D Good luck!

168: ... What happened to the DBZ fandom when I discovered KH? Because... Well, Vegeta dominates from the bottom. It's all in the attitude—position is negotiable. Did that change when I moved from Toriyama to Nomura? Please tell me Goku still does that possessive little growl thing in fanfics. I ♥ that so hard.

I miss DBZ fandom so much. I wish I hadn't had to scroll past that pic so fast—not censored enough. (Really should stop reading F!S at work...) I'm kind of terrified of the movie. It's going to suck so, so, so hard, but I'm afraid newbies will find it bearable and a movie-fandom will be born and I'll have to hide in a corner clutching my printed-in-2000-DBZ-fanfic-collection and trying not to cry.

oh my god. yes. to all the above. and then add on the scene where he's monologuing after freezing captain hammer. and when he grabs the girl's face and is all "i bring you pain; the kind you can't suffer quietly." and her whimper? yes.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
117. I'm trying really hard to be optimistic about the wording here, given that I understand the protagonist of the book ended up identifying as genderqueer and not male.

134. Funny, I FEEL like I'm crashing a girls' slumber party in slash communities, every time. Six years in fandom, and it still feels like I'm somehow Doing It Wrong.

But really, any guy who goes to a slash or yaoi community should be prepared for girly, fannish squee, and if somebody has an issue with it... Well, they really shouldn't be there. Squee isn't automatically stupid, stupidity is stupid... Likewise, unrealistic is not necessarily the same thing as badly written.

I'm not going to look down on anyone for getting excited about something they like.

If anything, I kind of live vicariously through other (female) slasher's squee. Because not only is that sort of self-expression totally socially unacceptable for guys in general (I mean, maybe society might write you off, but you can do it), but I grew up under that sort of father who hit you harder if you cried and laughed at the things you loved just because you loved them most. Every time I think I've moved past that, I find another hang-up to trip over. Some emotions I can express easily, others (like just general enjoyment) I find I automatically suppress somewhat, no matter how strongly I feel. It's nice to go somewhere where people don't feel like they're failures for saying what they like.

Anyway, I tend to fly under the radar as much as possible. I dunno, some people might be MORE freaked out if they found that someone they'd be seeing around for weeks was a guy, but most people seem to find it easier that way. Like, if you couldn't tell until I said something, I'm probably not a threat to The Way Things Operate.

157. Aw, I'd been under the impression that this had gotten retconned at some point. Man.

What I meant was that, after reading the book, I realized that Jess' (butch, genderqueer) masculine woobiness pushed the same mental buttons as some of my favorite slash objects' (male) masculine woobiness, and that it was the ability to evoke this sort of emotional reaction that I valued most in the slash I was reading.

114. EEE TOTAL DRAMA ISLAND. I love that show. (Dear fandom, please exist.)

135. I don't know if it's so much a matter of religion, but I think I'd feel a little better about death if I knew it would take the form of the Discworld Death, complete with speech in ALL CAPS.

101. Did you come up with that before or after watching Shrek? Just curious. But interesting, nonetheless.
106. Good question. I can somewhat see Robert DeNiro, but I think even he would come up short.
112. KUDOS
117. Awesome.
123. While I think of Bandit Keith, LOL.
125. Brad Swaile, the guy who played Quatre in Gundam Wing.
134. Umm…you do know that yaoi is about (gay) guys, right? *confused at lack of internal logic*
144. How cute!
145. You have excellent taste.
168. That’s sad, when your friends fight about who’s on the bottom. WHO CARES REALLY?

101 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only really seen all of the first Shrek, and pieces of the others, so I had to think for a moment. But I do recall the male stepsister. I never thought of Shrek as I wrote the secret, I had always found the stepsisters in Cinderella suspicious before that. Hugely unfeminine, large feet, tall curveless bodies, etc. Although I can see why you would think that it was because of Shrek. Things like that and the posts about the plays where they're played by males has made me realize that the idea is actually pretty common.

134. If a guy is in a slash community, he's either A) there for the same reason you are, and not interested in mocking you for squeeing, or B) a troll, and why should you care what he has to say anyway? Speaking as someone whose best friend is a dude who ships slash and got me into fandom in the first place, and as someone who used to proofread my ex-boyfriend's slashfic, this kind of attitude is silly and needless. Just enjoy yourself and stop worrying about what other people think. Anyone who judges you isn't worth your time, male or female.

106, 155

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
106. If you're really that worried about it, don't go see it. Simple as that. The rest of us who don't care if it's 100% true to the original source will have just as much fun without you, I assure you.

All snark aside, judging something before even seeing it - before there's even a cast decided on - is really pretty stupid.

155. This. So much this. Is it really so important that your favorite villain be acknowledged as "A+ NUMBAH ONE FOREVARRRR!!"? I mean, Jesus. You like what you like, they'll like what they like, and everyone should be happy with that.

101. I think they were just supposed to be ugly. Really. Nonetheless, your theory amuses me greatly!

106. You know, I wouldn't sweat it... I'm not believing it when they say that all these movies are coming out, based off of anime. There was supposedly going to be a Pet Shop of Horrors movie that never came around, there's a Hellsing trailer that no one's seen any more of, etcetc. I think it's just junk done to pull reactions.

136. Man, I feel ya. I actually tried to get a forum going and wasn't able to get any members for MONTHS. People just started to join, though, so my hopes are renewed! There aren't many of us, but it's enough to keep you interested. So if you manage to muster up the guts, drop me a message, and I'll give you the link! (Or you can google it nd find us, I think?)

148. Wow, is that AX08? Ahaha.
