121. I still ship it. Violent though the whole thing was, I still cried like a baby when they said goodbye to each other.

134. ...And that's kinda one of the problems of the fandom itself. Real boys should not make you cower in embarrassment while fake ones make you hot. Trust me from personal experience; real boys > fake boys.

Eh, I think I get what the OP means. It's not just being attracted to them-- it's how you respond to them. I know there's a worry that if an actual guy sees me fangirling all over in a shower of estrogen and swoon, he'll use it as an excuse to not take me seriously in any other setting. 'Because hey, she's just a dumb fangirl.'

So even if my initial reaction is OMG HAWTT I'm going to tone it down if there's a guy around. OP likes comms where she doesn't have to tone it down or risk ridicule.

Honestly, I have no problem with people thinking 6 or 7 are the best games -- I'll disagree, but hey, each his own. What annoys me is when people get outright fanboyish about it, dissing on people who like other games, refusing to acknowledge the other games in the series might be as good, only accepting other fans' opinions as valid.

I mean, I liked FF6 and 7 fine. Not my favorites, but still.

It's actually almost worse with the rabid FF6 fans, because they're so entitled and smug about it. "I liked FF before the 3D era, so I'm better than all those FF7 fans," sort of thing. It's silly. I didn't get into the series until the 3D era (the PS2 era, even) because we didn't own an SNES or a PSX. Why does this make me "less of a fan"?

Because true fans are always the first fans, or didn't you get the memo? See: I played FFVII before the sequels, I played Tactics and not just XII, I was a fan of the book before the movie, etc.

In the case of VI fans-- well, I've had people who flat out refused to acknowledge that there are, in fact, Final Fantasy games before VII, that they were worthless because they are "icky" and don't have FMVs. Not even exaggerating, and this has happened more than once. I think people overreacted to that attitude, and made a big stink because they felt forgotten. But recently I think the tide has turned: not that Final Fantasy VII and the 3d games don't have a wider fanbase (especially X) but now it's sort of become in to hate on FFVII and call it overrated. See how IGN rated FFVI #9 in its most recent list of best all time games (the highest of any RPG) and FFVII was at #76, behind Planescape: Torment.

RAMBLE RAMBLE RAMBLE, some gamers are freaking insecure, and try to reassure themselves by forcing their own tastes on others. Which in turn creates more insecurity.

115: Cry moar.

159: Dear OP,
Sometimes, the original Japanese has its own karaoke at the bottom of the opening for TV airing. Also, people just like to sing along with opening themes. Are you also opposed to them translating the song lyrics?

159 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
a) I know that exists, but not many anime I watch include those in the raws. Translating those is slightly different, I think...
b) People sing along with the Friends theme song, but they don't sub that. I don't see why it's so necessary. It doesn't seem like a huge jump to post the original and/or translated lyrics on a board or website instead, or if it's an IRC only fansub group, offer them as a separate text file for download.

[identity profile] p-zeitgeist.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You know they're traditionally danced by men in the ballet, right? (The people who did the animation probably knew that.)

It was an enormous disappointment to me when I first saw it as a small child. At first, the stepsisters were like the best thing ever in the history of the world -- there were these girls, and for once they were the ones who got to pick up the prince and toss him in the air instead of it being always the other way round. So I burbled about it to my mother, and she told me the awful truth. The guys still got to have all the fun, even when they had to cross-dress to do it. Dammit.

106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-13 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Dragonball probably will suck, but don't let that get your hopes up, because the film industry still sees much untapped resource in the anime genre. They will milk it for all it's worth, because they're out of original ideas. & $$$

[identity profile] dots.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really think the aim of that movie was to convert anybody. I figured it was to make cash off of people who were already Christian, you know?

Didn't see it, but that's what I thought it was trying to do.

159. I like karaoke fansubs especially when they have kanji, as they help me with my Japanese. I really hate it when the subbers do it so that the words disappear after they've been sung, though, as it makes it difficult to perceive the whole of it, at least for someone as Japanese-challenged as me. I also usually download both subbed and raw versions of my series, so I'll see the non-subbed OP & ED often anyway.

On that note, if anyone knows of a decently subbed version of Gackt's Redemption PV, pass a link. The only one I've seen had the Amazing Disappearing Words.

123. This makes me kinda proud to be American x)

It reminds me of the 2004 phantom vs. the old black and white one. That new fans cry how much they love him and how sexy he is, when the original could be said to be the farthest thing from. There are people who do think both old Joker, and old phantom are sexy, but the new crowds are crazy about the younger sexier versions and it may be hard to buy that they are into them for anything but "OMG TEH PRETEH!!!11"

141

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Here I was starting to think there were only three people in the world who didn't hate the twins, and I was 1/3 of them. I liked Maya, and I loved her relationship with her brother.

On the other hand, I find Sylar only slightly more interesting than watching bread mold, and just about as appealing, so I'm clearly entirely out of sync with Heroes fandom.

I mean I'm not going to shout it from the rooftops or anything, and I don't spend every waking moment longing for the Joker's loins, but I can say that there are much weirder things one could be attracted to than Ledger's Joker

101. I agree. Especially after going to London and seeing a Cinderella panto over Christmas where they were. ('And these are my daughters.' 'Are they twins?' 'No, why?' 'Because I can't imagine anyone would wanna fuck you twice ...')

106. I feel the same way about Dark Tower. And, well, this, of course. And it's not meant to be a slight to any actors out there. More a comment on the character, amirite?

109. I was just glad there was a reason for it ... at first it seemed sort of random and stupid, but it propels the whole series. If you haven't finished it, hurry and do because it rocks. Especially towards the end.

116. Aw man. I'm already embarrassed enough to like this show. I didn't know it had a bitchy fandom.

135. Well, it sort of is in Small Gods. Which is sad.

142. Needs moar 8th Doctor. Otherwise, rockin' picture.

156. The moment you posted this secret, it started to happen. Japan is like that. You laugh now, but in two years you're gonna own that doujin and know I'm right.

157. He has better legs, anyway. Even in The Two Doctors when he was a fair bit older.

159. I work with a lazy group that just does them boring and unobtrusively like the rest of the subs. I consider that more tolerable -- not the same, but at least there's no flying katakana and shit.

135) You wish that it was ridiculously obvious that the gods existed, yet it would be safe to ignore them? Or do you mean you wish that the afterlife that you'd get is the one you expect you'll get?

TB!4) I don't know who the subject of the secret is, but "celebrity X could do so much better than celebrity Y" statements always bug me. Do interviews and celebrity gossip give you so much insight into the character of X and Y that you can confidently say that someone other than Y would make X happier?

Re: TB!4

I'm not the OP, and I really don't care about Jensen Ackles' personal life at all, but there's a tiny part of me that thinks if they have kids, she's going to dilute his pretty pretty genepool. Kinda the same way I felt when Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. Irrational and petty, yes, but I'm taking a stand against depriving the world of super-hot people in 20 years.

Fail secret is fail. The DN dub is utter fail. The voices do not fit anyone and I feel the Ocean Group bullshitted the entire thing just to make Viz happy. OG is usually so good casting that I had very high standards for them, they failed to meet them. Even the crappy Yugioh dub put out by 4Kids is better.

Also, DN is on [Adult Swim], not Cartoon Network, unless, of course, you don't live in the US.
