there are extremely good reasons to think that Kanye West has mental health issues even without taking his politics into account

Also fuck every single person who supports Trump

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
More campaigning for Trump 2020.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If only we were nicer to people, they wouldn't choose to support tax-cheating, sexual-assaulting, incompetent disaster of a president and his demonstrably racist and classist policies?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, being nicer clearly wouldn't help at all. Carry on.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of garbage is this? The GOP spends 8 years veering as far as it can go in the direction of sheer lunacy, in support of Birthers and Sandy Hook truthers and Pizzagaters and people who think that George Soros funds all of their political opponents, and people who are white nationalists in all but name (and sometimes in name as well), and controls all three branches of government. And the strategy that Democrats must follow is "be nicer"? These people look at Donald Trump and vote for him, and it's the Democrats' fault that they chose to do so because they weren't nicer? Get outta here with that bullshit. They're adults, they're citizens, they chose to do what they did.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
More like Democrats shouldn't have ran a presidential candidate with one of the poorest likeabilities in ages, actively alienate the working class, and actually vote. It's like you guys want to blame everyone but yourself.

That's crap. She was clearly a thousand times better than Trump, and anyone who thought they were even comparable was either stupid or willfully ignorant.

inb4 "it's the upper middle class who voted him in!"

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She was a shit candidate, and I do think that "nominate better candidates" is a much better strategy than "be nicer".

But people still made a choice to vote for Donald Trump, they made that decision, and that's still their responsibility. And what this "alienate the working class" nonsense is, I sure don't know.

NART but I’m working class and I had working class parents and grandparents and like fuck would I ever have voted for Resident Chump, a man who was born with a fucking silver spoon in his mouth and probably a goddamn platinum buttplug up his ass that only got pulled out when it was replaced by Vladimir Putin’s hand like the world’s most disgusting puppet.

He’s Romney all over again but with zero business acumen aside from fucking over his contractors and employees, he’s doing his damndest to run the county like a mafia don and into the ground. He’s raised taxes (oh wait they’re called tariffs same fucking thing) to the equivalent of his tax cut that btw expires in 2027 for people who aren’t corporations or able to go diving in a money vault like Scrooge McDuck while trying to cut Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and Social Security.

Lots of the working class and working poor aren’t white and/or are single moms or disabled and he’s got zero empathy for any of that. The only thing he’s ever worked at in his life is stealing from people and the government to enrich himself. I’ve missed one midterm primary election in the 17 years I’ve been able to vote. FUCK YOU for assuming the working class fell for his bullshit in lockstep, or that all the working poor think like you.

Clearly "fuck you" is the proper strategy.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's certainly what the empirical evidence would seem to suggest.

This. I do not get the, "I'm tired of you insulting me for supporting Trump. I'll show you! I'll go vote for him!" attitude. What the hell is that supposed to prove? All that tells me is that the person voting for Trump is doing so for the most immature of reasons. If people don't want to be accused of being racist/sexist/xenophobic/etc., or at least supporting it, then maybe they shouldn't be supporting candidates that push such ideas and beliefs.

Also, some people have tried to "be nicer" and have civil conversations with Trump supporters. I've yet to see it change anything. All that winds up happening is that the Trump supporters continue to dig in their heels and further buy into his lies and bullshit, and the people who tried to be nice feel like they've been talking to a brick wall.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Trump supporters would literally rather believe that he is leading a secret investigation into a worldwide conspiracy of satanist globalist pedophiles than accept that he is a shitty president.

NAYRT—I really don’t get people like AYRT—spite has occasionally been what keeps me clinging to life and (arguable) sanity by my fingernails, but there are some positions I wouldn’t support or vote for no matter how steeped in black bile I got.

What positive changes would/has 45 brought about for his supporters that don’t boil down to “owning the libs,” pandering to white supremacists, taking money from the poor to give to the rich, and treating PoC, women, the disabled, immigrants, LGBT+ people, non-Christians (and some kinds of Christian, even!) and the poor like dirt to be mocked, used, abused, and killed at the whim of rich white straight Christian men?

Basically it seems like AYRT just wants to hurt people because some people who didn’t vote for 45 mock 45 and his supporters. I guess when you’re rich, white, straight, and Christian, mockery must be punished by voting for venal, empathy-deficient ignoramouses like 45.

I honestly am wondering how far inside your own echo chamber of social media and perhaps friends with advanced educations you are that you cannot "see" the thousands upon thousands of people who don't agree with you about Trump. There are masses of older folks and working class people who you will never read a tweet from, see a tumblr post from or hear a rallying call at your local university who feel that he is still representing their interests, their morality, their fears and dreams. Please don't dismiss them. Don't say fuck them. You want to say that to your great grandfather's face who fought in WWII or Korea? Please try to understand where they are coming from. People react to anger with anger. They become tribal and circle the wagons of their minds, and will never be convinced of a gentler path. You feel sooo very justified in YOUR anger, be warned they do too.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
omg bitch I have tried to empathize with poor beleaguered republicans who really think torture and racism will make us safe etc since 2001 and you know what, I am DONE trying to convince myself that it's ever going to matter

republicans have been gushing frothing font of rage since the tea party and have not let up

I'm reacting to THEIR anger, after almost 20 years of knowing they'd like to destroy my (poor, queer, female) life in exchange for a tax break for millionaires, and that they think I'm a nasty elitist heathen baby-killing bitch because I'm uppity enough to be crushed under student loans for the next thirty years and I like salads sometimes, and I want to be able to access basic birth control

so yeah. fuck them. OH NO MY GRANDFATHER, fuck you, both my grandfathers fought in WWII and they were both card carrying FDR democrats. one of them worked as a union rep and one of them was a local dem committee chair. if YOUR grandfather was in WWII, sorry sweetie but killing people 60 years ago doesn't mean a person is magically good or smart whether they suffered or not. if they're for Trump then FUCK. THEM.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
And this is why we can't have nice things. Sorry, but in the end, this kind of anger and hostility is not productive. Be practical please. All this stewing in your own juices is not healthy.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

What is "practical"? What is "productive"? Who defines what things are practical and productive? Why does being legitimately angry preclude also doing practical things? Why is the advice to be healthy and not hold on to anger never directed at the long howl of racist right-wing rage that culminated in the election of a bankrupt reality TV star who bragged of sexual assault to the Presidency?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I do believe you make my point. They all suck. I hope the Dems sweep all branches of government in the next few years, just so you will have some peace. Nothing will change but I hope you will be happier.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
what an utterly useless and empty piece of reflexive, meaningless cynicism

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well you got me there, I am extremely cynical. And evidently it's useless to get anyone to see another side. What can you do...

First of all, they're wrong.

I do have some sympathy for the ones who are honest dupes. But they're wrong and they're doing immense harm to the country. And there is a damn limit. And I don't know how many of them really are honest dupes - I don't think very many. If they feel that he's representing their interest, their morality, their fears and dreams - I have to think that is, in some part, a statement on the nature of their conceptions of morality, and their interests, and their fears and dreams. And I think it's very damn insulting, and wrong, that you think you have to have an advanced education, or what have you, to see that both Trump and his principles are wrong. It's not a damn secret.

The problem is that, as gentle as you can be, you end up coming up against the same bedrock reality: the underlying worldview and ideology. Treating people gently - I mean, damn it, we do have to have some gentleness, but you have to square that against that fact, and against the deeply-entrenched racism and classism and selfishness and crassness and misogyny that animates Trump and that is responsible for his popularity. And they're not children, they're adults. Rational, reasoning citizens, who have endorsed these beliefs of their own free will.

Hell and all if I know the answer, but I don't think that refusing to face up to the reality, or criticize people's beliefs where they're wrong, is the way forward.
