They were smoking. Sharing a small flame between too cigarettes. Too close, Mello thinks, and glares at the two of them.

"I could just lend you a match or something," he tells Matt.

"Do you even have one?" Matt asks, and laughs. Mamimi starts laughing too, and says

"If he didn't bring one he'd be left behind, Chief." Matt nods. The blond's blood feels too hot with the look Mamimi gives him. Like she's bored with him. Or expectant. Waiting? Even Mello can't tell, and he hates not understanding people. He's supposed to be able to.

But the brunet mumbles something to Mamimi, and she laughs, nodding. Mello glares more, and when Matt catches his eye, he explains "Just telling her, you wouldn't be left behind. You're the one carrying the gasoline."

"Too heavy for Mamimi," the girl announces, and jumps up to balance on the sidewalk's edge. Matt holds out his hand to help her balance, and she takes it quickly.

Mello hates everything. Since when could he not understand strangers in seconds? Since when could he not understand Matt? He steps up beside Matt, and does his best to be in the conversations. But the words are hard to follow. Matt talks quietly, with his head turned towards the red-head. He talks about video games that Mello has never played. Talks about fires and the smell of smoke that Mello has never liked.

You both smell terrible, he thinks. Mamimi jumps down from the sidewalk, and looks at him, smiling, oblivious to his inner hatred. She's stupid.

"This part's your job!" She tells him, pointing to the gasoline in his hand, though her fingers barely pass her sweater sleeves.

He tosses the container to her and says "You do it," but she fumbles, unable to catch it, and whines when it hits her, then falls from her flailing arms and nearly hits her foot.

"I said it's too heavy for me." She reminds him, speakingly slowly and calmly, although her expression is confused. Childish.

"I'll do it, then," Matt volunteers, and begins trailing the house with it.

"I'll follow you, so that it feels like Mamimi is working too!"

So, um, this is a total speed-fic -- 'cause I know myself, and if I begin reading through it and editing and so forth I'm never gonna get the nerve to just go ahead and post it. I hope you'll like it, regardless ^_^;

It was absolutely normal; it'd be stranger if he didn't do it.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

So why, why oh why, did Lockon feel like the universe's biggest pervert? He'd tried to be quiet, he really had, because Setsuna was in the room next to his -- and, really, the kid was traumatized enough as it was. So he'd bitten his bottom lip, and kept as quiet and still as possible while he jacked off.

Too bad he'd forgotten about his roommate. Well, no, he hadn't forgotten about Haro per se -- it was more of an oversight on his part, having assumed that his partner spent the nights recharging or dreaming of electrical sheep or doing whatever it was he did. Lockon should've known better, he really should've.

If he'd had, he wouldn't currently be faced with an ear-flapping Haro. "Lockon. What's wrong?" The voice that he'd gotten used to so fast, despite the mechanical inflection, now made him flinch. He could almost feel his dick shrinking in his hand, and sweat that had nothing to do with the physical exertion began to bead his brow.

"H-Haro," he began, but found himself unable to continue. What was he supposed to say, anyway? Foregoing words and going for action instead, Lockon yanked the blanket over himself.

"Lockon! Lockon!"

"Yeah, I... I hear you. I'm fine, Haro, thanks. Don't worry about it."

"We're partners."

Lockon smiled at that, tense body starting to relax. "Mm, I know."

"Partners share everything."

"Understood!" Lockon chuckled, extending an arm to give Haro's round form an affectionate pet. "You're a real friend. Thanks, partner."

"Any time!" Haro came closer, apparently taking the gratitude as an invitation to spend the night nestled in the crook of Lockon's arm.

And, oddly enough, Lockon didn't really mind.

He just splutters something incoherent. The next date, he's bringing the food.

She's still a child, Steven tells himself every time her presence makes his chest tighten. He tries to convince himself he simply admires May's spirit and pluck, or envies her innocence.

But when she smiles, when she says his name with such awe and respect, when her cheek leans against his shoulder as they navigate their way through Granite Cave...every word and gesture is just another painful way of driving the point home, making him face the truth.

I love her.

His feelings are wrong and he knows it. She's only twelve, and while Steven isn't yet an old man he's still too old for May.

Sometimes he lets himself believe she might feel the same way, even a little. There's a sparkle in her eyes as she listens to his stories, she takes his advice to heart more than the advice of anyone else, looks at him with the utmost admiration. Brendan even teases that May has a little crush on him, but they all know it's hero worship and nothing more.

In a perfect world, age wouldn't matter. But he can't wish for that, nor can he wish for her to be older or him younger. All he can do is promise to always stay by her side as her mentor.

Perhaps his feelings will fade with time. She'll find a love closer to her age, and he'll support her as he was meant to all along.
