What do people get wrong about where you live?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
In fictional settings, especially.

Just that Texas is not one, unified thing. Actually, many of the cities are extremely liberal. It is the rural areas that fit more into the stereotypes.

Kinda similar with California. The whole state isn't liberal and there are some very conservative areas.

I get the opposite being in New York state. A lot of people have no idea how rural and conservative many parts of the state are because all they think of is NYC.

That there's only corn and cows. We have a Walmart too.

LOL, same.

I don't know how common it is in fictional settings, but there's also the fact that people sometimes confuse my state of Iowa with Idaho and Ohio.

(I also remember a middle school teacher of mine telling our class a story once about how she went on a trip out east for something. And when she'd tell people she was from Iowa, they'd respond with, "Oh. What state is that in?" Yeah.)

I've never seen it, but apparently the episode of NCIS set in my city includes shots of palm trees despite there not being any palm trees in the whole state.

Oklahoma is worse than you think it is. And small towns are not charming. They suck.

There's a lot of dislike toward Tampa for reasons I don't understand. I've never gone but it's better than the Panhandle.

I feel like people will shittalk any part of Florida except Miami. And sometimes they'll shittalk Miami.

TBH Florida in general makes me wince simply because as a lawyer, I'm aware of quite a few of the crappy conservative laws of the state that have caused a lot of harm. But that's the government. I don't feel negative towards any particular parts of Florida.

Apparently Germans don't know what humor is, when I believe the media from other countries (movies, tv shows, late night shows, stand up comedy).

Also the language, but I guess almost every foreign language gets butchered in other countries, so I'm usually fine unless they make it sound distinctly Hitler-holding-speeches-like.

I hate the attitude that German is an ugly language though. Speaking as someone who is trying to learn it.

no, goddamnit, Oakland is not one big ghetto.
Also, everything in California is not one fifteen minute drive away from everything else in the state.

California is fucking huge, who on earth thought that? I follow a film journalist in Burbank who won't go to screenings on the nearest lot to his house because a 20 minute drive takes an hour.

Australia is not as dangerous as people think it is. Just read the warning signs, don't poke the bitey things with sticks, and don't wander off without a plan and a person who knows that plan so they know where to start looking if it goes wrong.

I don’t live there anymore, but I had to stop reading a book once which contained the line “everybody in Seattle carries an umbrella with them all the time,” which is such a bald-faced lie that I doubt the writer ever visited Seattle.

Well, Missouri is *not* the deep south, even though we have our share of hillbillies and rednecks. St. Louis is *not* a huge hive of crime, not even East St. Louis. KCMO, however, is pretty fucking awful.

Also, despite poor performance in the actual elections, a lot of Missourians are pretty liberal. Not *enough*, but some.

No one here can play Dueling Banjos. Shoot, no one I know even owns a banjo.

...we shame our ancestors.

The city I live in is majority African American, it's not all toothless hilbillies with banjos.

I get a lot of ideas that Scotland is full of fat angry drunks with red hair? And yeah there are those people, but there's also people like my Granny who's very small and sweet and soft-spoken and blond. (The weather's right tho, grey and rainy as all Hell and I love it and miss it cos I'm living in Australia now)

Media keeps putting metro stations in places where there aren't metro stations. The Washington DC metro is actually surprisingly sparse.
