Zuko in ATLA.

I don't think I would have bought it without Iroh. Iroh knows he has the potential to change and he lets him figure it out for himself. He just loves him.

I like to watch the early episodes and laugh about how much fun they had making him such a hammy villainous brat. It helps that he's so bad at being bad.

Agent Kallus - Star Wars Rebels

They did a good job of showing his slow change. I really liked how seeing someone who should hate him reaching out to him ended up being the catalyst for his redemption. I'm super happy that he ended up with Zeb in the end, and by the end, it felt like he'd earned a happy ending.

Impmon on Digimon Tamers. I think that entire story is extra powerful because Impmon starts out as such a non-threat that his atrocities are all the more shocking, but still completely in tune with what he had been established as. What makes his redemption so particularly raw is of course that his attempt at making up for things that he never really can make up for ultimately fails - as an unforeseen consequence of his actions - but even as he fails, we know that he's back to what he started out as and a little better at that.

ATLA: Zuko

Fringe: Walter. Not really a full redemption arc, more like "you fucked up, learn to accept the consequences."

Pose: Elektra Abundance.

Parks and Recreation: Again, not really a redemption arc, and the premise is spoiled a bit now that we have a literal Ron Swanson in the White House, but that subtle shift from the arch-libertarian troll to adoption of some of Leslie's values is seismic.

Zuko from ATLA is probably still my favourite redemption arc ever tbh, he wasn't even my favourite character on the show but I was so invested in him coming over to the good side in the end and was so happy when he did.

And it wasn't an easy transition, he fucked up a lot trying to do the right thing, he'd do one step forwards and then 5 steps back. I honestly wanted to smack him on the head sometimes because he was just being so stupid, but it made it all the better when he did finally come-around.

Also I liked that most of Team Avatar wasn't immediately on-board with him siding with them, he had to earn their trust.

Vegeta on DBZ's redemption was amusing to me, it was more of a 'he's a good guy now but he's still an ass'.

Bellamy - One Piece

It worked for me because, well, for one, he showed up literally 500 chapters after his last appearance, which implied that something nasty had happened to him and you were basically led to believe that this petty minor villain had gotten what he deserved. But then he's back after having suffered, paid his dues, had a revelation. On-screen he attempts to be the same old badass motherfucker that he's always been but gets his ass handed to him. Repeatedly. At the end of which he genuinely faces the consequences of his poor choices, admits he was wrong, and accepts punishment. No detail is spared. I honestly had forgotten about him and didn't care about him until he showed back up in Dressrosa, and his arc there made me want to see him redeemed. And now I really like his character.

... and what made it so bad? My experience was pretty mild and had nothing to do with family drama or someone getting drunk and faceplanting in the cake. It was just a really long, boring sermon by the pastor. Who gives an hour long sermon at a wedding??

Not a wedding, but this reminds me of my granddad's funeral. I still don't know how I feel about it, but the priest basically paused the funeral for twenty minutes to give an incredibly long, rambling sermon that no one understood because ... I think it was basically an extremely overwrought baking metaphor for life, but he rambled so much and meandered around the point and kept taking odd pauses to try and remember where he was, and basically nobody had the first clue what the hell he was going on about. "The yeast is in the dough!" And the funeral had been really emotional, I'd been struggling badly through it, but then this happened and, on the one hand, I wasn't fighting not to cry anymore, but on the other hand I couldn't help but feel my granddad was staring in exasperation at the man from his coffin.

It was like, the priest did such a bafflingly bad job that it accidentally helped the emotional tension and let everyone calm down? IDK.

How about worse in retrospect? Went to a wedding. It was okay. Six months later the wife found out her husband (boyfriend of like 7 years, they had two kids), had been cheating on her for YEARS. He has a one year old from another woman.

Probably when I was 14 and my aunt got married. She put me in a low cut designer dress and heels and booked me in for professional hair and makeup when she got hers done. I spent the entire night fending off advances from drunk men while she squealed about how we looked just like sisters and made comments about my body to people. I got drunk because that made it easier to smile and not care.

I posted this on reddit earlier, but I'll post it here too why not.

It was the wedding of the sister of one of my high school friends, i was 14 at the time. Well, first of all the ceremony was the most misogynistic bullshit I've ever seen. The bride's father walked her down the aisle all normal and then they had a "transfer of headship" ceremony wherein he handed over ownership of her to the groom.

Then we all got to hear the grandfather of the bride, who was officiating, rant and lecture for like half an hour on how 1) marriage means a wife is now the property of her husband and must give over all her own thoughts, wants, and interests in favor of those of her new master because her job is to be subservient and his is to control her; 2) any marriage that's not like this is bad and wrong and SINFUL and that's why divorce happens.

The actual vows took way less time than the insane sermon, of course they were heavy on the "obey." Then we all went downstairs to the undecorated church gym to have plain sheet cake and red punch at 5:30 pm with no music playing. Then they left and everyone straggled home. It sucked so much.

My best friend's wedding where her in-laws invited their entire creepy cult-like holy roller church. I was pregnant at the time and every single one of those fuckers rubbed my belly like I was a troll doll in a bridesmaid's dress.

A Catholic wedding, lol. The story isn't dramatic. It was just like three hours long in an non-airconditioned church in July, and the sermon was super conservative and preachy.

That was one of the first weddings I went to and I never shook the feeling that attending weddings was a bit of a chore. Now I've been to really beautiful, lovely weddings that have made me cry. But still, my gut reaction walking in is "be patient and brace yourself."

I haven't been to many weddings and none of them were that bad. But I did go to one which was close to the airport and the ceremony was outside and I couldn't hear anything because of planes flying overhead.
