Ask Something

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What is something you've wanted to ask, but never been able to for whatever reason? (Question that might be taken the wrong way, no one to ask, etc.)

Why do parent friends think their friends care about the most mundane details of their kids' lives, and why do other parents find it interesting?

This isn't a childfree rag on parent friends. I really don't understand why my friends with kids go crazy over Child Person getting a new pair of shoes, for instance. I can understand the big milestones easily. But it's a pair of shoes, not walking for the first time or the first day of kindergarten or winning the Nobel Prize.

It seems to mostly be on social sites like LJ and Facebook. IRL, my parent friends talk about their kids, but not like that.

Why does half the internet think everyone is too happy, and the other half think everyone is too negative? I've seen people complaining about both, and it's quite contradictory.

Books that had a profound impact on you?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And how/why?

(Doesn't have to be, like, a life-changing book. It could just be a book you read and haven't been able to stop thinking about since.)

Harry Potter. I know hating JK Rowling and contending the books were horrible the whole time is all the rage, but say what you want, the books shaped my life. I owe so much to them.

It's technically not a book and I know I've mentioned it on here before, but the absolutely biggest story in my life is "The Story of an Hour", because it just instantly showed me how living alone can be a privilege, and how for some people, the happily ever after might come when a relationship ends.

After The First Death by Robert Cormier. It was the first book I ever read that made me realize, "Oh, books can have really depressing endings. And that is okay."

Harry Potter was a big one when I was growing up. The old Star Wars EU as well. Anne of Green Gables. The Silmarillion more recently.

As a teen, Francesca Lia Block's books had a strong impact on me. I was deeply unhappy and life was pretty mundane, but her writing tapped into an inate feeling I had that life was also strange, quirky, sensual, and full of beauty - even when it was awful.

As an adult, Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels made a tremendous impression on me. Actually, I loved it for the same reasons I loves FLB's books as a teen, although Fugitive Pieces was much more adult, nuanced, subtle, and realism-based.

Lord of the Rings. It got me through adolescence.

Technically a short story, but "The Circular Ruins" jut changed me as a writer and a person.

Do you boycott anything? If so, why?

Any brands, companies, stores, whatever? For what reasons? Can be a local store, for a reason as petty as the employees there are awful, or something idealistic.
