Thanks for turning my comment and bonus rant into a secret, OP!

I don't like the Pride and Prejudice comparison either, anon. (I think a more apt comparison is Hades/Persephone.)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of OP (someone else made the secret) here, and tbh I can’t see that one either. Hades’ primary role was as ruler/minder/caretaker of those who were already dead and he was pretty staid and responsible compared to most other Greek gods, and I can’t see Kylo giving enough of a fuck if the world was plunged into everlasting winter to let Rey go for half the year. And he doesn’t strike me as the sober, responsible type. He’s maybe kind of Heathcliff-y.

But then, I loathe Kylo Ren and think he’s got jack-shit to offer Rey aside from Adam Driver’s handsome face and weirdly-displayed (those pants did him no favors) six-pack and find his actions and behavior horrifying, repulsive, or both. Show some positive, caring, non-sexual feeling toward someone who’s not Rey, get a couple normal hobbies—the murderous grandpa he idolized made scrapheap robots and treated them like friends, he could do that. Or double down on the “omg so dark” and play electric guitar in a bad death metal band. Idc. Just something other than brood, throw tantrums, plot galaxy-wide dominion, and murder people.

And I ship lots of fucked up shit; it’s not like I’m opposed to heroine/horrible villain ships in general. Apparently this is a weird combo of opinions to hold when I don’t ship Rey with any rival partners except in a “I guess, if it’s not Reylo” kind of way.

The thing is, though, Star Wars has always been about redemption. Always. Yes, Kylo as he is now is terrible. He's done horrible things and is a horrible person. But redemption is always possible. I personally don't want it to happen through a romance with Rey. But I don't think the idea is completely implausible, and I see why some would like it.

Kylo is a genocidal terrorist, no he is not redeemable

IA

I'm a big fan of hero/villain ships but the villains have to have some compelling quality (not necessarily a GOOD quality, just a compelling one). Kylo just...doesn't

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
He's just impossible for me to really like or sympathize with. That's all it comes down to. I'm just not into shipping characters that I don't like.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda went through a Reylo phase but now that the hype has died down... they really don't have any chemistry. I find Rey kind of too generic heroine and Kylo is the embodiment of incel edgelord.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
But Kylo isn't even that good looking.

On a side note, I'd read that story about Mr Darcy.

To you. Many people do find him attractive. Because attraction is subjective. What one person thinks looks good another person thinks is ugly. That's the way attraction works.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks for explaining that!

p.s. The bug is dead, you can take the stick out now.

It's the first time that I find someone so many people see as attractive as esthetically quite unpleasing (for my taste, of course. I'm not a fan of his numerous beauty marks/moles for instance). Generally, at worst, I feel meh (like with Benedict Cumberbatch) about them. I wish I felt differently.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

Even if you find him good looking he's certainly not traditionally handsome enough to consider it in the context of this secret.

The guy looks like a memory sketch of Ezra Miller, and he's weird looking as well.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Now I want to read that version of Pride & Prejudice! And then see Mr Darcy get his comeuppance at the end

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If Darcy did those things, then he wouldn't be Darcy and if Elizabeth was okay with it, then she wouldn't be Elizabeth. So it's not really the same story anymore.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure whether to be amused or exasperated that P&P folks don't understand that the comparison is between the disastrous proposals.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of the sentiment if not the secret, and I get where the initial impulse to compare them comes from. But the follow through is a fucking flood of P&P Reylo fanart and Regency fics where Benjamin Solo is a broodingly handsome misunderstood loner who eventually wins Rey’s (wtf is she called in Regency AUs?) heart after proving his worth and gallantry. Kylo Ren doesn’t have £10,000 a year in interest derived from sound investment in the Funds, the prudent management of his ancestral lands, and the respect of his tenants for his sober and considerate demeanor.

He has a fleet of military spaceships and the nominal command of forces bent on the subjugation and/or destruction of several planetary governments and their people.

Now, I’m sure there are AUs out there where Ben Solo doesn’t go off the rails in his late teens or early twenties and meets 20ish Rey in his early 30s, like in canon, but unlike in canon he’s not a whiny, murderous whackjob.

I’m so grossed out by his canon self that I have no desire to read those fics, but at least they’re not “villain avoids becoming villain and instead is a brooding duke and meets the heroine who is not a (resourceful scavenger/travelling musician/trainee magician/fill in canon occupation here) but a generic beautiful plucky heroine,” which I cringe at even when it happens to my favorite problematic ships.

Especially when the characters then follow a fairly standard romance novel and/or romcom plot to its normal conclusion. I much prefer fic which changes either parts of a canon’s backstory, or adds one or two new elements or changes the canon setting. Even with pairings I like, changing both setting and most of the characters’ backstory and then adding soulmate marks or whatever makes me feel like I’m reading original fic with a cheap, badly made fanfic veneer.

And if you take away Kylo Ren murdering people and throwing tantrums, what’s left of his onscreen persona to write fanfic about? Apparently the novelizations go into more detail, but if everything shown onscreen about him makes me flinch, I’m not gonna hunt down script novelizations to read more about him.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can sorta see Regency style in space, but the whole point of Pride and Prejudice is that Darcy is excessively proper for his station, including his initial dislike of the Bennets. If you're going to shoehorn the utter stupidity of reylo into period drama, Wuthering Heights would be a better fit.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

But following through on Kylo Ren being Mr Darcy means that Luke is Lady Catherine which is hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure whether to be amused or exasperated that someone thinks that fans are going to limit their comparisons to one isolated incident and not engage in a whole bunch of romanticizing, woobifying comparisons in addition to that. I'm not even in Star Wars fandom and I know this happens.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of the sentiment if not the secret here and believe me I know there’s mass-woobification going on. I’ve been guilty of it myself in other fandoms. I just follow a bunch of blogs that post about stuff I like in addition to Reylo, and sunce I don’t have a tumblr, I just scroll past Reylo stuff really quickly. I don’t send Reylo fans hate or anything. And maybe it’s just the specific fans I follow, but a good 30-40% of the fic and art I glimpse while scrolling frantically past is Regency/P&P stuff. I’m not even a big Austen fan, but Star Wars is not a comedy of manners or anything close.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
And what's wrong with that?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I secretly wish Kylo and Rey would go intergalactic!Bonnie and Clyde. But 1) I can't imagine that happening, and 2) I can't imagine anyone doing that well.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
A book I would read.
