I see "because I'm in college lulz" after like so many secret posts, and I'm just wondering why you think college of all places is the place to conform to "normality" and be into "grown up things" or whatever. Like, seriously, most of the things that people are thinking is too weird for their age BECAUSE THEY ARE IN COLLEGE are like not weird at all it's like IDK, FOR INSTANCE, having a crush on Marty McFly -- so does my mom, and she is past colleg age. If you talk to people in your classes or your dorm or whatever you will probably find there are other people who are interested in the same or similar things that are "immature". IT'S NOT LIKE YOU SUDDENLY GET OVER THINGS BECAUSE YOU GO TO COLLEGE.

I live just outside Edinburgh, and cept for the tiny Tokyopop ReCon there's next to nothing, and nowhere except Forbidden Planet sells any anime merchandise for example.

lol I just go to the London Expos instead. I went to Collectormania in Glasgow but there was only one stall with any anime stuff, and even then it was limited to the huge fandoms of Naruto, Death Note and Bleach.

109 Well, I don't flame—and I don't comment anon, except the one time I had posted a secret. But if someone posts something I find offensive, like all those anti-feminist secrets that day last week? I'm going to call them on it.

114 People LOVE living vicariously through characters that do whatever they want, and behave as though they don't care what other people think. It's really clear from the way so many people talk about power, and the silly things that get put here on f!s (really? your flist would be mad if you said you liked that?) and the popularity of anon memes that a lot of people feel very trapped by fear of other people's opinions and feel there are many things they want to do but can't. Personally, I don't feel that way at all, and I also refuse to have toxic people like that in my life or even on my TV screen.

(Sorry Ryan, but I won't be watching your reality shows. Luv ya.)

120 That's really unfortunate! I feel the opposite (despite my frustration last night with that condescending Heroes secret person). It's a great place to go when fandom hegemony gets you down and you realize that there is so much diversity of opinion, that you aren't the only one who likes that rare pairing or rare fandom. The troll stuff, to be honest, I pretty much ignore.

129 Yeah, that isn't why. It isn't elitist to know more. It's elitist to feel that the people who know less have no business being in the fandom, and it's elitist to think of yourself as the person (or group) who gets to decide who can be in fandom and who can't. This is a huge reason why I've never seen the LotR movies—the fandom is so elitist about the books and guess what? I'm never going to read those books. Elitism doesn't just keep away the plebes; it also keeps away people who just like a canon but aren't interested in memorizing every second of it. It's certainly kept me out of the fandoms for things I enjoy watching.

129. Most of the time they do act like elitists, though. Almost every fandom I've ever been in has shunned any and all fans that came in after the canon achieved mainstream(ish) success, even if the new fans also read/watched/played the source material eventually. Many times when a movie/anime gets announced for a fandom I've been meaning to get into, but have put off, I'll hurry up and go read it because I don't want to deal with the attitude of the old-time fans if I come in late.
