I don't care either way about Claire, but in 2019, I'm fairly certain you can find other books with diverse protagonists like that.

They've already had 12 versions of the Doctor that were conspicuously gendered, so I don't see the issue with a 13th.

I mean, if they wanted to do an androgynous Doctor, that would be really cool, but I don't see how it "doesn't make sense".

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I would bet $1,000,000 dollars that you could find other similarly diverse fantasy books written by people who aren't plagiarists.

Oh, no, I totally disagree. I mean, I agree that it's terrible, it's one of the worst guest performances in any show ever. But it's one of my favorite episodes to watch. He takes the role so far past what anyone would think was reasonable. You can't look away. It's incredible.

It hardly sounds fair to call an actual person a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's certainly a take.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the only House Hunters I like because it's so neat seeing what homes are like around the world.

To be fair, the aspirational stuff is a big problem with the entirely US version, too. Everyone wants an open layout for entertaining, and a big, fenced-in yard for the kids and dog (who may not exist yet), and a guest room, and a man cave, and a view of water and so on.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. With any skating pair, not just these two... it's just so intimate!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There are many forms of love. It doesn't have to be sexual.

I watch shows like this sometimes. Don't go out of my way for it but if I'm sick and not wanting to move very far from my sofa even with a million channels there's not a lot of choice in terms of day time TV. And property shows don't really require much thinking.

Anyway, pretty houses are good but it does make me laugh how often they have a strict budget they absolutely cannot go over and then suddenly find an extra like £100K somewhere, somehow.

God this show caused so much drama on a friend's Facebook page earlier this week. Like, I thought she and another friend were actually going to properly fall out over it!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda like the forms being conspicuously gendered. Because it makes more of a point when the conspicuous gender isn't some kind of hinge point of the Doctor's personality. It happens to be a female body this time, and that directly affects... not much, which proves it doesn't really matter what the outsides happen to be. Whereas being in an ambiguous/androgynous form all the time can't make that point.

IDK, imo having 13 be a woman makes a stronger point that the Doctor doesn't regard gender the same way as most humans would, and isn't influenced by it the same way as we would be. What we regard as something intrinsically meaningful is just a change of clothes to an alien

How DARE she be positive and short.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh my god the arguments are so frustrating to read!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You are the gross one for referring to short, positive people as 'elf' and 'pixie dream girl'. Sorry she is doing a job she enjoys while not being a miserable jerk.

Whatcha Watching?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Any new shows or movies you've gotten into recently? Any new fandoms?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But do Time Lords/Gallifreyans reproduce sexually? Because if that's the case, I wouldn't say gender is meaningless.

It is kind of interesting how they're handling it though. The switch doesn't really change who The Doctor is but it does, on occasion, change how humans react to her.

Perhaps predictably, this is something that people in Doctor Who fandom have extremely, extremely long and tedious and vicious arguments over.

I watched the She-ra reboot last month, I'm almost done with The Dragon Prince and I'll move to Hilda next.
Into the Spiderverse was great!

Bumble BFF

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to find more friends I can just drop everything and go out to lunch with. I heard about Bumble BFF. Has anyone hear used it?

One concern I have is that I'm very much an introvert. I'm looking for friends to get sushi with more than go to a loud club with, and from what I've read, it may be geared more towards the latter. Is there any truth to that? If so, it probably isn't the right site for me.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
reproducing sexually doesn't mean 'gender' means anything, since sex =/= gender though. if people can regenerate and change physical sexes, they could in theory induce swapping back and forth to have the necessary biology at the time of reproduction if needed without a gender identity
