Personally, I love Gurren-Lagann because it manages to be all sorts of things at the same time, but still manages to not seem like it's trying to be too much. It's a homage show and it's a comedy show, it's serious and emotional and it's got some depth.

Yes, it's full of homages, but it manages to take plenty of references, and make it's own story and meaning out of them. And yes, it's ridiculous and jokes a lot AND BIG, but it's also serious at times, and pulls it off well, and is down-to-earth in some aspects (as has been said before, characterisation being one).

I think the problem is, depending on how you look at it when you start watching it, it's possible you'll see it as just one of those things. If you think it's just a homage show with no depth, then you're not going to listen to other people when they tell you it's actually got depth. If you think it's well-written and such, but you didn't notice any references, that doesn't stop it from being a homage show too.

It's all of them at the same time. People have to stop pretending it's just one of them. Gainax themselve take the storytelling very seriously, even.

182. People are never satisfied until you're doing everything "normal" people do. But as long as you're happy and not hurting anyone, that's all that matters. Your RL friends clearly don't understand you, but maybe you haven't given them a chance to, if you, like many people, haven't shared your fandoms with them. Also, it's entirely possible to be with someone who is just as nerdy and fandomy as you are. :) It is worth noting that you can have your cake and eat it too, but again, whatever makes you happy should be where you're at. ^_^

115 -- But is Young X-Men going to be any better than the Kyle & Yost New X-Men? I took a look at the first issue and wasn't impressed; the writing seemed a bit glib and fake-portentous to me.

I have to admit, I was one of those who read the Weir & DiFillipis New Mutants/New X-Men: Academy X and said "God, so boring, when is anything going to happen?" But then Kyle & Yost took over and turned it into an unrelenting angstfest (which works fine for their pet character X-23, not so well for the others), and I really missed the gentle character-driven stories Weir & DiFillipis used to do. I'm not sure I blame Kyle & Yost, though. Marvel's gone in for the dark'n'gritty stuff in a big way since at least Avengers Disassembled. It's getting tedious at this stage and I hope the pendulum swings in the opposite direction soon. There's only so much angst a girl can take...

Um, I find the lightning scene in the finale tend times more interesting when it is platonic and stays platonic, make it romantic and it just becomes another he took a bullet for the women he loves, which is kind of boring.
