110 - in the nineteenth century, 'mum' was used as a term of respect towards an unrelated woman, as was 'mother'. I agree with you that it would be nice to see more authors realising that it doesn't automatically mean Toby is addressing her as his mother, though (although that probably is how he ends up thinking of her).

I see..that's interesting! But I'd say the majoritory of the fanfic writers don't know that and I think they think he calls her 'mum' because they don't understand the accent..because he's saying 'ma'am' in the movie :P

156: I've been friends with quite a few fans and for some time, followed the manga myself for a few hundred chapters before going off it due to the general development of it, so whilst I was never terribly immersed, I lurked around and saw quite a bit. Plus it is immensely popular on some of the oekaki boards I frequented.
