[The Umbrella Academy]

I was pretty sympathetic towards Luthor until he dumped Reginald's sins on Pogo. And I'm 100% sure Luthor would've bowed his head and believed with his whole heart Reginald had a good reason to do everything he did if Reginald was still alive. Luthor wouldn't have the guts to put the blame where it actually belonged, because he was and always will be a coward when it comes to holding his daddy accountable.

Luthor is a hypocritical, moronic, bully and the only thing he knows how to do, like all cowards, is punch down, not up.

Luther was wrong to lash out at Pogo, but IMO that's what it was - lashing out as opposed to displacing all of Reginald's sins on Pogo. As for being certain Luther never would've seen through his father, I don't see any evidence for that, but I also don't have any hostility towards the character the way you seem to.

DA

Lashing out ONCE is understandable, but Luthor "lashed out" at Pogo every chance he got. Like when Allison was injured; Luthor made sure Pogo knew he hated him and didn't trust him. That's not just lashing out, that's legit animosity that Luthor had no intention of letting go of any time soon. He didn't even seem to care when Pogo died.

lbr luthor only cares about allison, anyone else could die/get hurt and it wouldn't even register to him.

wow it makes me super uncomfortable to call someone a coward for failing to stand up to their lifelong abuser

yeah of course he displaces and punches down, that's how abuse teaches you to stay safe

is it, at some point, Luther's responsibility to be an adult and stop hurting people around him? yeah, definitely. is it totally understable to hate him for doing a lot of fucked up counter-productive stuff? yeah

but there seems to be a willful refusal to understand the psychological consequences of abuse still happening for imperfect or insufficiently likable victims underlying this comment and I do not care for it

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing: Luthor has zero sympathy for anyone else abused by the same abuser, and that makes it hard to feel for him.

Pogo might have been genetically designed to be a slave and Luthor doesn't give a shit; Pogo is a fucking monster as far as Luthor's concerned. He won't even try to understand why Pogo did what he did for Reginald.

Vanya, locked away for who knows how long, mind wiped and brain washed, drugged and treated like trash until she has a breakdown; Luthor decides to double down and turns a delicate, yet manageable situation into the literal apocalypse.

I'll take his abuse into account when Luthor takes his head out of his ass and stops perpetuating abuse.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Pogo is also super complicit in abuse/abusive himself, and if he has sympathy for the children he's able to ignore it and continue that behavior. To me, Pogo is the less sympathetic figure because he seems to have a much better grasp on why his choices are hurting people, but he doesn't stop. I'm not sure why you're judging the one but not the other, unless it's that Pogo is soft-spoken and/or dead.

"I'll take his abuse into account when" < this is exactly the thing I don't like. Good victims Vs Bad Victims and only one category Counting is gross. Luthor's abuse doesn't make any of his bullshit decisions okay. But the fact that he's also kind of a dickhead is not a reason to ignore abuse, or act like his dickishness just comes out of nowhere/is an essential part of who he is.

Backstory explains shitty behavior, but doesn't always excuse it. It totally makes sense that Luther reacted to things the way he did! But it doesn't mean he was right to do so, and he should be held responsible/asked to change.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Luther definitely needs to change! He was in the wrong a lot! But "coward" has such a....weird judgementalism that feels like it's targeted at the wrong things, to me. There's a contempt to it.

Luther is not my fave but I agree he is a tragic figure - he has so deeply bought into the lie of him being Number 1 - and that being Number 1 meant he was the most powerful, smartest, most loved - that he can’t see that it was all a lie. He’s a classic golden child who hasn’t accepted that they were abused yet.

He still fucks it up so hard by the end I can’t like him though.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I feel bad for all of the kids, Luther included. Their lives SUCKED. But that doesn't mean projecting and taking it out on each other is okay--it wasn't okay for Allison to snap at Vanya at the beginning, or for Luther to choke out and imprison Vanya, or for Vanya to destroy absolutely everything. There are personal psychological reasons for all of the above, but they were still shitty actions.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I find him incredibly sympathetic specifically BECAUSE he has so completely bought into the lies that he was fed. Yes, he fucks things up, but it's easy to connect point A to point B and understand exactly how and why his thought processes got him to that point.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
He was as much a victim of abuse as the others

But he also abused the others

So fuck him

By that logic, wouldn't it be fuck everybody?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
the others, however, are perfect victims with no fleas at all

why do you even watch morally complicated shows

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Liking a morally complicated show for being morally complicated doesn't mean you can't be annoyed when someone's being a dick.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

The others are all messed up and frequently obnoxious
They do the wrong things, don't communicate, contribute to things going wrong
Luthor is the only one who locks anyone in solitary confinement until they go mad

But I guess that's just ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Moral Complexity *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I mean. You could also say "Allison's the only one who uses her powers to strip her sibling of her identity and wreck her self-esteem and entire life". Or "Vanya is the only one who slits her sister's throat during an argument". Or "Klaus is the only one whose drag habits drive him to steal from his own family". Or "Five is the only one who becomes a highly successful assassin".

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Moral Complexity *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

And yet, Luther seems to receive a disproportionate amount of hate.

There is hope for him, I definitely think that there is.

It all depends though on the character development path that they lead him on in S2. The first season was a wonderful study in 'what not to do!" from every single person in the Umbrella Academy. Everyone in that series made a choice that negatively effected the outcome of the series. The next season hopefully will get the characters thinking of perhaps what they could do better this time around.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone in that family was a goddamn mess and it was wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Same! I just got around to watching this a few days ago; based on previous secrets here and comments I'd seen in other places, I was expecting him to be absolutely horrible in some way or do something utterly, maliciously villainous at some point, and that just ... didn't happen. Like, for sure the guy would not win any awards for being well-adjusted or making good decisions or anything, but most of the time I felt sorry for him more than anything else.
