I partially agree. You walk into a thread that says SPOILERS FOR ENDGAME / LITTLE / HELLBOY / A DOG'S WAY HOME and start a fight bc spoilers, you're the problem.

If you walk into a thread today that says "Hey I have a question about Solo, a movie almost a year old," and the first post is really spoilers about endgame, they're a tool.

I think it's even more tricky IRL. Especially with shows like GoT that a lot of people watch, it's kind of shitty to come into work the next morning after an an episode aired and have everyone shove spoilers in your face even though you may not have had the time to watch it yet.

Is it even possible to spoil A Dog's Way Home more than the trailer did? I feel like the trailer was just the entire movie, abridged.

Yup with you. Also get annoyed at the mindset of "spoilers shouldn't exist" and "spoilers ruin things for everyone" because I like spoilers and go hunting for them. And there is a certain mindset I find sometimes with the idea that spoilers just shouldn't exist, trailsrs shouldn't exist, doesn't matter who likes them, because a few people don't want them they shouldn't exist for anyone. And no.

But it is also rude to force spoilers on people. I think there is a balance, and people should be allowed to enjoy how they choose.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone specifically says they don't want to be spoiled and you spoil them, that's a dick move.

But if you haven't watched the new Avenger's movie, go on twitter, and get spoiled, you only have yourself to blame.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much sums up my thoughts.

FFS. What is the problem that people have with just making reasonable efforts to avoid really significant spoilers for things that just came out, or at least giving people a heads up if you're going to spoil them? I know that some people are completely berserk around spoilers, but what's so wrong with having common sense spoiler warnings?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean like the one at the top of every f!s post that still doesn't stop people from pitching massive hissyfits about spoilers constantly? I don't know. What is so wrong with that?

If this secret is about going into an article or post about whatever thing I'm trying to avoid spoilers for, sure, that's on me.

Otherwise? Bullshit.

I was reading an article about that new folding smartphone and some asshole posted an Endgame spoiler in the comments. How the fuck is that my fault?
supermanda: (Default)

[personal profile] supermanda 2019-04-28 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This, honestly. My dad looked up how many of a certain movie there was in the MCU and got a massive spoiler in the FIRST google image search. The article had the spoiler in the title for fuck sakes.

He is not a fandom kind of guy, he just wanted to see how many of the DVDs he should go out and buy before seeing Endgame next weekend lmao. Stuff like that is such unfair bullshit tbh. I agree that dabbling around on Twitter/Tumblr (still a thing?)/Reddit/etc. is a risky move and you should steer clear from those places if you are sensitive to spoilers. But if you are not digging through fandom-heavy areas on the internet, you should not be getting spoiled at all imo, and if you are because of some dick off, despite your best efforts to avoid spoilers, then how is that your fault?

Spoiler: it's not.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
For the most part, I agree. Like, I wouldn't post anything online about Endgame this weekend, but if someone who cares enough about spoilers doesn't get around to it for six months, that's not my fuckin' fault.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But that means that you disagree with OP, doesn't it?

i said it back then when it was a comment secret and i'm gonna say it again.

this. so much this.
if you go on twitter the morning after like, idk, GOT aired during the night (I am one of the euroanons and got's broadcast is in the middle of the night for us) and you complain about getting spoilt for the big episode twist / the big death, it's your own frigging fault.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically, you expect people to just not use the Internet at all if they're concerned about spoilers?

Exactly. I haven't seen Endgame yet, so you know what I'm NOT doing? Browsing Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook.

Haven't seen a single Endgame spoiler so far.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree 100%.

Also it's important to remember that there are a lot of assholes out there who enjoy intentionally spoiling stuff. Best to avoid spaces where spoilers and the assholes might be prevalent, imo.

I think it's reasonable to check with people first if they have seen something or not but I do agree if you go into a discussion thread and don't expect to see spoilers then, well...what did you expect?

But the Internet being the way it is doesn't make life easier sometimes. You get people not tagging their shit properly and that's before I get started on how you can be reading an article on something completely not related like Contemporary Basket Weaving and some dickhead in the comments (usually via a Facebook comment thread link) will post HEY JUST SO YOU KNOW Y DIES IN Z!

The thing I absolutely hate though is the demands for iron clad spoiler tagging when something has been out more than a few weeks. You can't expect people to talk in code forever.

I partially agree. I will do everything I can to avoid spoilers. But that only works if people are courteous and tag/warn. No, I don't consider the blanket spoiler warning at the top of FS enough. It's not even just that I would like actual spoiler warnings (although that would be nice, but it could just be the picture/how things are phrased. I haven't seen Endgame, so this is not accurate to my knowledge, but let's say Steve kills Hulk. Putting a picture of the scene in question would be a jerk move right after the movie came out as it is difficult not to see that. Or phrasing a secret as I can't believe Steve killed Hulk in Endgame and I'm mad! when it could be phrased, I just saw Endgame and I'm so mad Steve killed Hulk! One is a lot easier for me to skip over without seeing anything, especially depending on font and size.

I will never forget the time I was looking up recipes that use leftover rice and I was spoiled for the finale of a season of Project Runway. Like, HOW is that on me??

Also I'm just annoyed with entertainment journalism in general. Everyone has to get the fucking scoop! Thanks, I really wanted to know things about Legion Season 3...

[personal profile] teashadephoenix 2019-04-29 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that's hard to do if some dickhead yells "Snape kills Dumbledore" as he drives by. I think the culture around "No Spoilers!" is annoying and pretentious. Like, police yourself, you goon. Bit thats hard to do if people dont ascribe to some kind of code of where to post information where people *can* avoid it, so i get the reminders to tag spoilers.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-29 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're not willing to wear earplugs the entire time you're buying the book, you have no one to blame but yourself /s

(Anonymous) 2019-04-29 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally agree, and I make a point to avoid places where I know there are likely to be spoilers - especially unwarned-for spoilers - if I'm trying to avoid them. However, when you wind up coming across spoilers on mainstream news sites, blogs that have never talked about the thing I'm trying to avoid, or other unrelated sites, it gets tricky. You also can't avoid people IRL blurting things out within your range of hearing.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-02 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I agree but also disagree. Like yes, stay away from social media if you can if you don't want to be spoiled. But people should also be courteous enough to tag their spoilers too. You're an asshole if you don't tag spoilers.
