Maybe getting angry or annoyed at the person who is actually a piece of shit and not the person going "Oh, this person sucks." would be a better use of your time.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because OP can only do one or the other. They can't do both, that'd be crazy!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe taking your own advice and getting annoyed at the person making the comics by posting to him directly, instead of getting annoyed at someone innocently enjoying his comics by adding your hate for the artist to their post?

The person sharing the comic likely doesn't know any of the alleged stuff about this guy, and now they're going to get attacked anyway by the internet mob because that accusation is stuck to their post forever. The guy who made the comics will not see any of this. Criticism must go to the source directly to be effective. What the second comment did is, sorry, an actual case of virtue signaling.

“Intensely religious” starting off the list of crimes...............

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The people who say these things also only ever seem to mind someone being intensely religious when the religion in question is Christianity.

Yeah, theophobia is extremely uncool and we need to start taking all the progress points from people who push that crap. I will criticize specific religious practices and beliefs all day long but not a person for having a religion or non-religion. The minute you start hating on someone for having a religious faith, you lose your right to speak. Same thing with hatred of race, gender, sexuality, or class.

I was under the impression he made an anti-choice comic. It's relevant to warn people when the artist's actual work can take that kind of turn.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it, though?

yeah, finding out he was anti-choice killed my love of his comics for sure, but i'm not gonna rain on my SIL's parade about it.

I saw a similar comment on reddit. And yet, no one can show me the "receipts".

it's not very well-drawn either.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pro-choice and don't being anti-choice all that terrible tbh

Sometimes I wonder how these people deal with interacting with the public

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I can interact with people who disagree with me, even in ways that I find morally abhorrent. But I also do find laws that would subject women to interrogations to determine whether they should be charged with a crime for miscarrying morally abhorrent, and that does shape my choices about what entertainment I enjoy and things of that nature.

Sometimes I wonder how these people deal with interacting with the public

I actually agree that the person in this secret was being kind of a douche. The way they barged in with their information about the cartoonist, it's like they were getting enjoyment out of telling the other commenter they were wrong to enjoy something. However, the whole "How can these people deal with real life interactions?" schtick is pretty much bogus.

1. Do you think people go around asking everyone they interact with what their political opinions are? Like, "I'd really like to order a grande iced macchiato from you, but I can't do that until you tell me whether you're pro-choice." Or, "Wait, are you pro-choice; I'm only going to thank you for holding the door for me if you're pro-choice." Nobody does that.

2. Most people, in their off-line life, are perfectly capable of being civil and polite to people whose political views they strongly disagree with. Just because I'm not going to pursue a friendship with an anti-choice dude doesn't mean I'll refuse to speak to him or insult him on sight. So in instances where I do find out that someone I have routine contact with has political views I find repugnant, I just make a mental note that I don't want to form a relationship with them beyond what's necessary, and go on with life. It's pretty easy.

Instant block material.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I did not know the artist was antichoice, and misogynistic, but I appreciate knowing now. Does not affect whether I enjoy the comics or not (as a fan of some of Lovecraft’s works, I fully embrace death of the author). Then again I was already expecting some shit after the last reddit-fave comic artist turned out to be an incel.

It's gotten to the point where I'm far more distrustful of the people accusing others of being 'problematic' than I am of the individuals that are being accused. I have no desire to be around anyone that is cool with slandering a total stranger that they've never personally met or interacted with.

Dude has since stated that he and his wife hold private personal views based on their religious views but believe in separation of church and state and vote Democrat. Also I spent five minutes on his Instagram and found pro- Black Lives Matter posts. So the killjoy is WILDLY overstating it.

I can't help but feel that if they'd put 'Guys, just to warn you the guy who makes this comic is x, y and z' then it wouldn't be an issue. I think it's the incredibly obnoxious phrasing of their warning that's the issue.

It also comes across as a thinly veiled neon sign pointing tumblrinas to'morally dogpile here'.

I dropped out of fandom around the time call-out culture started taking off in a big way. My anxiety couldn't handle trying to live up to constantly changing, impossible standards. Not because I wanted to say bad things or show my ass but because those who try to do the right thing but sometimes make mistakes get dragged the worst, from what I've seen.
