127. When a fandom takes a controversial or downright villainous character and downplays his flaws, turning him into an object of desire.

Okay, so other than the kidnapping thing, does ZEX actually have any flaws? I mean, if we're not considering liking humans to be a flaw? And I guess perversion is a flaw, but we're definitely not downplaying that.

I don't really see the whole kidnapping thing as downplayed so much as 'well, if the situation had worked out differently he wouldn't have done that'.

It's not just the kidnapping. For example, he was willing to risk the safety of every person on his base for the sake of his perversion -- getting the Beauty -- and it did, in fact, ultimately cost all of their lives. He apparently collects creatures to keep in his "menagerie" with no particular regard for whether or not they are sentient.

Basically, it is his perversion that's his biggest flaw, and it gets downplayed in fandom from a seriously creepy obsession to "poor, misunderstood ZEX sees beauty in humans -- particularly the Captain." And he's a liar, too -- or rather, he deliberately misleads you about what kind of creature his Beauty is, sending off to hunt a dangerous monster blind.

He has a noble side, too, as a war hero who was shunned by his countrymen. But making him a total martyr makes him much less interesting as a character. I like ZEX, but I want to see him being creepy and underhanded and then have a few moments of glory or sympathy. I don't want to see him as a tragic hero, or the Captain's woobie.

134. I agree... the fansub elitism among most fans is ridiculous. It's stupid how many people act like you aren't hardcore if you buy the DVDs, when you actually spent money to legally own the series you love. Though there are fans in countries where little anime is licensed who say the same things, they still have no right. I've actually seen someone say something like "Haha, it's licensed in your country! Sucks to be you!." UH.

167. AAAUUUUGGGHHHH I HATE THIS SO MUCH. If you're going to flock your shit, fine, whatever. Don't go advertising it to communities! Even if your icons and fic are ~*~amazing~*~ I don't join flocked fandom communities just to get them. When you feel the need to flock fanstuff, that means you're taking it way too seriously.
