I actually had to stop and think "Wait, when was Jimmy Olson black" bc I was thinking of the DCEU.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Jimmy Olson would actually be an excellent character to change from white to black imo.

In the US undoubtedly true.

Redheads get a fucking brutal ride in the UK. Much worse than the States.

If you google 'newstatesman should ginger-bashing be a hate crime' you will get an article with some examples from the news of the kind of abuse redheads get in Britain.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what exactly are you saying is undoubtedly true in the US but not in the UK

Kind of an exaggeration, don't you think? Plenty of brunettes and blondes (or even bald folks!) in there too.

But blond and brunet characters are otherwise plenty though.

Will Smith played Agent J, a white blonde guy.
Will Smith played Deadshot, a white brown haired guy.
Jamie Foxx played Electro, a white bald guy.
Michael Clarke Duncan played Kingpin, a white bald guy.
Tessa Thompson played Valkyrie, a white blonde woman.
Whoopi Goldberg played Benadette Thompson, a white blonde guy.
Michael B Jordan played the Human Torch, a white blonde guy.
RJ Cyler played Billy Cranston, a blonde white guy.
Jessie T. Usher played A-Train, a brown haired white guy.

Honestly, the biggest issue seems to be that they need to cast minorities other than black people if they want to race change.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people think diversity just refers to black people. Notice how much the topic of Asian winners at the Oscars was discussed during #oscarsowhite

You didn't mention the dude who plays Archie on Riverdale, so probably a troll secret. But he's not 100% white.

Most Hollywood redheads aren't even redheads, they're either wearing wigs or their hair is dyed. Are they taking jobs from redheads, too. There are non-white people with red hair. Would people have complained if a biracial or multi-racial person with red hair was playing Ariel, or would they complain her skin wasn't milky white?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a troll secret because they don't think Riverdale's Archie is black?

I wanna see Black Archie now.

Wait, is there a live-action adaptation where Jimmy Olsen is a redhead?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack Larson (Adventures of Superman), Marc McClure (Superman (1978), et al.), Michael Landes and Justin Whalin (Lois & Clark), Aaron Ashmore (Smallville), and Sam Huntington (Superman Returns) are all white, but they aren't redheads in their respective adaptations.

And, as far as I can tell from the translations I've read, the original story The Little Mermaid never mentions a hair color for her at all.

I think the new casting is fine and doesn't need justification. However, I hate that I keep seeing this posted as a gotcha on FB and other places. No, the little mermaid story doesn't say she is white with red hair. But this isn't a new take on the original story. This is a remake of the Disney version made by Disney. And that iconic version who has been around for over 20 years does have red hair.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want to see the racebent characters keep the red hair. Is that so much to ask? Most of the redheads in film are wigs/dyed anyways. And especially in the case of a mythical creature (mermaid) you can't really say "this can't happen."

Both! Ginger and racebent!

As a redhead I agree, tbh. It sucked growing up and having so few characters in media who looked like me when my blond and brunette friends couldn't throw a stone without finding at least five characters who looked like them. Ariel was a big deal to kid me because of that - at last, here was a princess who looked like me! So yeah, I'm gonna be salty about this because Ariel having red hair was something that was really important to me when I was younger and just wanted to have a character I could dress up as for Halloween.

I wonder if some of it is a subconscious decision based on some of the main stereotypes of redheads also being common stereotypes of black people. There's "outspoken, passionate, takes no shit" for the positive, "loud, rude, impertinent, violent-tempered" for the negative.

South Park literally was the first thing I thought of when that person made the comment about racism towards redheads, lol. Maybe it's the hair?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They rarely have real redheads play redheads in movies anyway. The cartoon examples of this are especially stupid. It seems like you only have a problem with this when the new character designs are black people.

Also, who's to say black Ariel won't have red hair? She's a fucking mermaid with crayon-red hair that does not occur naturally in anyone anywhere

I was bullied physically and mentally half of my life, especially during the childhood, for being a redhead. In my country (not USA, not UK but 'white') there rarely were ANY redheads in media, and if there were, they were the 'mean and ugly' characters. Not to mention that now more often than not, they can't even make a proper, natural redhead - our hair is NOT literally red. But yeah, take away even the weak, but any positive representation of redheads, because it's apparently too hard to make some new characters. Want a black mermaid? Make a new story and a new character. Black-something else? Make a new story and a new character.
