Good Things

It's been a crazy, fucked-up few days - does anyone have anything positive they'd like to share? Just to give us all a break from the endless screaming?

I got a new weed pipe that's made out of a jade beach pebble from Oregon. It fits perfectly in the palm of my hand, its texture is smooth and cool, the jade is a really nice deep forest green and is semi translucent. It smokes well and has an all around positive vibe. I really like it.

I got some raw peanuts and made boiled peanuts for work. The heathen I work with (in OK) have never had them.

It is finally not a hundred plus degrees here. Still 93, but I'll take it. Also, my cat has been particularly adorable today.

That's all I've got.

I found out that the version of Clip Studio I have on my laptop has 3D models available! I'm so glad I have something to use for figure references - I'm shit at proportions, and I'm the sort who doesn't practice things I don't feel confident in (so obvs I never get better).
Unfortunately, my tablet refuses to talk to my laptop, and the version of Clip Studio on my PC *doesn't* support 3D models - but I can make it work! I just create the model on my laptop, screen shot it, take the image over to the PC, and work from there.
I'm getting shit done! :D

Got booked to be in photo stills for some new show. It pays actor rate, which is pretty good. Easy day + good money = \o/

Well, I haven't gotten dizzy or thrown up in a week... of course, now I've probably jinxed myself. But at least I'll be home tomorrow if anything fucked up happens.

I got offered a full time job a couple weeks ago, but it’s super far away by public transit and I can’t drive. Yesterday, someone I work with got offered a full time position and turned it down, so I was offered that location instead. It’s the same distance away, but public transit in the area is better, so I can get up at 6 am instead of 5 am on early days, and be home by 9:30 pm instead of after midnight on my late day. Still not a fun commute, but I’ll do a way better job at my work if I’m not leaving for work in the dark every single day.

One of my all-time favorite fics for my current OTP just updated for the first time in two months, and it's a 10K chapter, plus the author just left a really nice reply to my comment on the last chapter. I am full of joy!

Inspired by 12 - Cats the movie vs. Cats the stage musical

(Anonymous) 2019-08-22 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Setting aside the issue of whether or not you find either costume creepy or you're a-okay with them... do they look the same to you?

That secret was made from a comment left on one of the "secrets you're too lazy to make" threads, and to be honest, I'm not really sure if the person who left it was sincere or just trying to start something. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, though.

Oh and for that one anon who thinks I deliberately made their comment into a racist-looking secret... nah. Your comment was about two live action Disney movies that happened to feature WOC leads. I chose images that reflected those movies. Other users may have commented negatively, but that wasn't me putting a spin on your secret, that was just... your secret. Which to be clear, *I* didn't think was racist, necessarily.

I hate them both but they do look different to me

I dislike both, but they're definitely different.

I prefer the musical costume version.

They don't look alike at all.

I don't know how anyone can even think that. Even if you don't think they're creepy and recognize the characters, they still don't look alike.

Re: Inspired by 12 - Cats the movie vs. Cats the stage musical

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
They're cat-flavored humans in skintight costumes. They may be different in the details, but the essence is the same. The internet is severely overreacting to this. Considering some of the comments I've seen on this comm with suggestions on how it *should* have been done (i.e. actual CGI animal cats, adding cat noses to the human faces, etc.) I'm rather glad they went the route the did.

Re: Inspired by 12 - Cats the movie vs. Cats the stage musical

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think the main issue in the movie version is with the headpieces and makeup. The headpieces change the head shape somewhat drastically and I think the costumes need that for stylisation. And while the stage makeup would obviously be too much, they really need something to soften the human features of the faces and make them more cat-like.
There are, in fact, a few roles in the stage version that look similar to the movie versions, namely Cassandra, Coripocat and Tantomile. They were always the strangest looking to me because they, like the movie versions, lack that extra fluff.

The mistake the movie made, imo, is not going the "we change some aspects of the actors' faces to make them look more like furries" route. Going full furry anthro cat might have worked.

I mean, I think Cats is one of the musicals least suited for a pseudo realistic movie adaption. But it could have been done at least slightly better. Some characters just look sad and terrible in the movie (hi Mistoffelees).

I suspect the person behind all the "looks the same, in essence it's all dancing, singing cats, which, for the record, is STUPID anyway" is Maxwell Sheffield.

I have this idea about writing about someone who was tormented by a bully throughout childhood and adolescence and confronts them as an adult when said bully is in prison.\

I initially thought of having the MC confronting this bully to prove to themselves they were no longer afraid of them. But I feel like this could come across as jerkish and pathetic somehow or petty. IDK I'm thinking of making the bully be a relative to at least somewhat explain why the MC would be visiting this person in prison and it would make the past bullying more deep and painful for the MC.

Does making the MC and their bully related make more sense? Or would it work to have them not related at all? I don't want the MC to come across unsympathetic , i guess.

Does anyone here have experience with long road trips? Especially long road trips with kids?
Main character in a story I've been toying with has a six-year-old, and they're driving from Chicago to Portland. I thought that 2-3 weeks would be a good, relaxed sort of timeframe - a couple of hours driving every day, and lots of time at each stop to take in the sights.
And thoughts?
