176. I can more or less understand where you're coming from. I believe on one of the pages the person who asked is if a cannon issue you have or not the thing. Then again, I don't think it has to be homophobia. IF you are disgusted by the thought of two guys being in a relationship that may be a bit homophobic, but at the same time your concern seems legit. I personally am mostly a cannon pairing and generally don't go along with slash unless it has some foundation. Personally, I don't get turned on by two guys making out/having sex. In the relationship form I can find a gay couple adorable, even if they are kissing, but taking it out of the context of something sincere it loses any interest for me. Now, some girls are into that while I don't see the appeal, and that's just the way it is. It doesn't mean that I'm homophobic, it just means I don't have the same sexual fantasies as others. (Especially since I have plenty of gay friends who hate it because it is general a misrepresentation of their actual relationships)

100% this.

CANON

Yeah, this is a total valid criticism. I mean, it's not like there are gay and bisexual slash fans or anything. And het romance is known for being 100% accurate.

I don't think that disliking slash = homophobia, but when people pull out bullshit excuses like this, I do start to wonder about their real motivations.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-14 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)

Which is what the internet is for, anyways

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
because i said that het doesn't have that issue as well =/ i don't like most het for that reason either haha.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-14 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
because i said that het doesn't have that issue as well =/ i don't like most het for that reason either haha.

Then why did you single slash out in the first place? Why did you mention your gay friends?

Look, as long as you don't treat slash differently than het, no problem. I just don't like double standards.

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I was simply bringing it up specifically because thats what this girl was addressing in her secret =)

I treat it differently only in the mere sense that if its purely a sex thing, I don't get turned on (although I'm starting to think its also because I'm largely turned-off by any anal sex) So anything sexual is where the line is drawn. Although, I can watch any sex-scene from an artistic sense if its part of a movie and have no problem (ala Brokeback Mountain)

Everything else is like the same thing to me, and in general cases I like very realistic pairings, and they can usually be found through cannon based on the stronger foundation (if I like the series enough I suppose) Although sometimes some fanficers can be convincing enough of a pairing to make it work imo.

How are they bullshit excuses?

The criticism is HELLA valid if you're approaching it from a familiarity with yaoi, I'll tell you that much.

I think you're oversimplifying it. It doesn't matter if het romance is known for being 100% accurate, they're two different things and you can't just rip them out of context to compare them.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-15 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
How are they bullshit excuses?

First of all, I'm sorry that I phrased it that way. It was unnecessarily aggressive and I hope that I didn't offend anybody. But I would say they're "bullshit excuses" if they don't make any logical sense. Many people have used the double standard where people who are otherwise fine with non-canon pairings, suddenly turn into Canon Nazis at the first mention of slash. Obviously, the answer they gave for disliking slash ("It's not canon!") doesn't work, so it leaves me wondering what their real reason is.

The criticism is HELLA valid if you're approaching it from a familiarity with yaoi, I'll tell you that much.

Maybe. Not having read any yaoi, I really can't comment.

It doesn't matter if het romance is known for being 100% accurate, they're two different things and you can't just rip them out of context to compare them.

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Out of context? And we're talking about romantic fanfic, aren't we? Other than the gender of the characters involved, I don't see any huge difference.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:40 am (UTC)(link)

Without getting into a diatribe on canon vs. fanon, that's a perfectly fair assessment.

Even romantic fanfic has a context - specifically, the culture (and subculture!) in which it's written. For instance: I think there's something to the "slash pairings aren't realistic" argument, and it can't really be compared to het, because often when people say that "slash pairings aren't realistic," what they often MEAN is "slash pairings are written like het, and they're not."

All relationships are idealized in fiction in some degree, het, bi or gay. They have been doing it for years, centuries even. Even in gay literature and shows (Queer as Folk, anyone?). I think it's silly to expect everyone to exempt one group of people from this.

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
When I said cannon I never said if the cannon was het, femslash, slash, bi, etc. For the record the issue is certainly not that they are idealized. I think in a sense any form of fiction is, but they don't even paint what is its like to really be gay always. Some fans can paint it with a strong character that seems human and realistic, while others do not.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about the issue of being gay itself in RL, but how it is presented in literature. Gay relationships are subjected to idealization as much as heterosexual relationships. Some fans do a realistic heterosexual relationship properly, some don't. Very, very relationships escape some sort of idealism.

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I was as well... and that's exactly what I explained above. In the same age-group the crazy overly romanticized fangirls are just as insane as the slash ones, but I just sometimes dislike I suppose the representation of gay guys in well mainly manga fandom. I know you may disagree with this but the general portrayal of some couples just doesn't seem very well realistic.

You know, slash/yaoi fans ship for the same (many and varied) reasons as het fans. I think it's a common misconception that we don't.

You spelt "canon" wrong.

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to go through the long process of reexplaining myself, but feel free to read through everything else I commented in regard to. If you'll notice I was specifically concerning what she was talking about to an extent. And honestly, i would technically be a slash fan because I do like some 'slash pairings' I just don't like clumping myself in the category of a shipper in the main fact that I detest most shipping wars and petty arguments in regard to such to begin with. I was just reflecting on her point. I don't think all het fans are the same and I don't believe all slash fans are the same so there are similar AND different reasons for ships overall, at least in my perspective.

I honestly thing shipping wars and het versus slash is utter nonsense. I am happy with people that enjoy both, or at the very least realize this isn't a shit-slinging war from two opposing sides. I love some 'pairings' that are slash, some that are het... it really depends on context. I mean, I don't participate in most fandom because my favorite things to do is analyze from a psychological perspective and I like to treat characters in their absolute characterizations. Now, for this reason I prefer working within the cannon, but I also feel that most cannon gives the freedom to fans to create whatever ridiculous stories they want. Crack is enjoyable as well. Back when I used to write fiction, I actually would test myself by writing from the points of views of characters I hated or writing the crackiest ships with as much cannon context as I could.

lol it happens, I do not participate in fandom largely so the proper terminology sometimes slips when I'm typing fast =), f!s is my little window into such.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anything you said contradicts my comment...? I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here, to be honest. In general, fanfic writers explore the characters and their possible development on the basis of their canon characterization.

(Canon as a term isn't actually a fandom invention, we just borrowed it. Since a cannon is a weapon you shoot people with, misspellings look kind of funny.)

See, YOU I like. And I ship everything. ESPECIALLY if it's not canon, it seems. (:

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Haha I think crack is fun (see icon), and canon I generally pay attention to in ways of observing character interaction since my inner psychological analyst gets the better of me. Sometimes though I feel people taking pairing TOO seriously. I honestly, in the fun of the moment, can pair anything because just taking characters doesn't necessarily restrict their tendencies and it can technically be explored based on purely newly invented situations. I believe more relationships occur based on chance interaction. No one is a fucking soulmate... fff

And seriously one of my favorite pairings to look at is between a gay friend who wants to have the children of his straight friend who is an asshole and likes to impregnate underage girls so... I'm definitely not a prude on on relationships.

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I HTML-failed up there. Just noticed it. ;;

But yes! Ahaha, some pairings I take more "seriously" than others, in that... canon pairings are canon, but some non-canon pairings are a lot more likely than some others. I love finding pairings that can be well explained via canon even if they aren't canon (see icon lolwhat). And yes, even the oft-railed-against "THEY NEVER EVEN INTERACT IN CANON!!" thing can easily be gotten around in fanfiction because... new situations can be imagined. \O_o/ If I think two personalities would work well together, and I find it fun to imagine how that might work out, why is that such a bad thing to some parts of fandom again?

... that pairing sounds AWESOME and I want it. Who are they and what's it from? =DDD (Also, your icon made me laugh for a good thirty seconds straight, thanks! XD)
