Halloween

Does anyone have any Halloween plans this year? Are you doing a party? Candy for kids? Are you doing a costume? Scary movies?

I love Halloween. My favorite holiday. I'm doing a party tomorrow for my Toastmasters club. I will be doing a witch costume. We're doing food. I'm bringing cupcakes and chips. And I'm doing the decorations. Also leading the meeting with an appropriately spooky theme.

On actual Halloween, I will make sure to have some candy in case I get some kids. But we haven't gotten any the past couple of years. Will watch some Halloween classics. Original Wicker Man, first two Halloween movies, Rosemary's Baby, Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon.

Might dress up for work if I feel like/can get something together, but Halloween has never been a thing for me beyond childhood trick or treating.

Actually Christmakkuh is the only holiday my family is big on.

Hopefully I’ll be feeling better by Halloween (stupid cold) and able to go to work in costume and then come home and hand out candy afterwards.

I have a bunch of costumes from years of making my own for Halloween and SDCC, and I’ll just wear one of them. I’m probably gonna stay home from work tomorrow too (home sick today, blargh) and sweep the front porch and carve pumpkins and tidy the living room while I clear more green goop from my respiratory system.

I've been watching a few horror movies, both ones I've already seen and liked and a couple of new ones (new to me, anyway) and might be going to a party if I can get an invite to one that isn't 2000 miles away (no exaggeration, I live in Calif and got invited to a Halloween party in Milwaukee ffs!). If not I'm just gonna go to Rocky Horror.

Well, it's a work-day, so no. Also, it's supposed to snow where i am, and while costumes and coats has always been a thing for kids in this area (and most of my Halloweens growing up) i have zero interest in being out in that at all.

Nobody trick-or-treats at my house, either - it's right on the main road and nobody walks up the perfectly good sidewalk.

So i'll probably just watch some movies (Great Pumpkin!) and go to bed early.

I'm off work (I didn't intentionally take the day off or anything, it just happens that one of my regular off days falls on Halloween) and I plan on just staying in and watching/reading creepy things. Might bake cookies or something just because.

How do you deal with always in trouble family members. My sister is just...a mess. She lives too hard away for me to help and frankly, I don't want to get caught in her shit. She had her kids taken away and no one really knows why and she can't get them back until she is done doing parenting classes. Her kids keep messaging me (on FB) saying how much they want to go home but there is nothing I can do. She is supposed to get her kids back near end of November but no idea if that is true. Hard to trust her.

My grandfather died a couple of months ago, and we all suspected he may have, not to put too fine a point on it, helped things along. He'd been sick for a while, he'd outlived his wife, one son and one granddaughter, he was just very tired. (There was also the timing - my aunt found his body the same morning my parents got back from an overseas holiday)
My dad's been cleaning out the house, seeing what can be taken by various family members, what can be sold, what can be donated, all the usual business there. And last week, he found the suicide note my grandfather thoughtfully wrote, then tucked in a random pile of papers in his study.
Dad came home, told my mum, told me, and asked me not to tell my brother - he indicated he wanted to do that himself. Not a huge challenge, in and of itself, as my brother lives in another state and we don't call that often.
Well, it's been a week, as I said, and I really want to talk to my brother, but I have no idea whether Dad's told him yet - he might be waiting until he visits in a few weeks. I've struggled with depression and suicidal ideation for years, and naturally a suicide in the family is messing me up a bit! I would like to be able to talk to my brother!
But Dad's been having a rough time, and I just don't know if I can ask him without him taking it as nagging :c

How do I explain to my unemployment agency that I'm not mad keen about their suggestion that I do 100 hours unpaid labour at a fast food joint on the other side of the city, because it will "probably" lead to actual paid work at some point?
I don't wish to be part of the statistic about unemployment in my state, but I also don't wish to be part of the statistics about disabled people being exploited for their labour!

I really like Wallander's ringtone on the show Wallander. It was designed specifically for the show. It sounds like a real ring-tone, just a few simple little plinking notes, almost cute, but the exact tones they use evoke unease.

But honestly, it only really works if you hear it in the show. When it goes off while the character is doing something else, that's when you really feel this sense of being unsettled.

The sound effects old tv comedies and other old stuff used for an off-screen car crash. Squeeling wheels and random crashing/glass-shattering noises.

I just need to rant

Like five months ago my dad and I found a juvenile bedbug in our place. A week or two after that, I started getting itchy bites, mostly on my ankles. We turned the house upside down cleaning it, bought pheromone traps, threw out a bunch of stuff, and put diatomacious earth everywhere.

Dad found two more bugs, both very small.

I continued getting bites, very occasionally, usually 1-2 weeks apart.

We thoroughly cleaned my sleeping area again.

I’m still getting bites, usually 1-2 weeks apart.

This morning an exterminator came and did a check. She found two droppings (not two areas with droppings, two droppings total) and no other evidence of an infestation.

I am at my wits end. I do not understand what is happening here. How can we have had bedbugs for five months without there being more evidence than two droppings? The exterminators won’t even do anything for us until we can catch a bedbug to prove we have them.

None of this makes any sense.

Huh. Do you maybe live in an apartment or condo complex, or take public transit? Or do things or frequent places where you could be being bitten away from home and/or pick up an occasional hitchhiker? I’m sorry you’re going through that, it sounds awful, and I hope the problem clears up whether or not you ever figure out what’s going on.

when I had bedbugs all I had to do is tell the exterminators and they just sprayed for them. the fact that the guys you're dealing with won't even do that tells me they don't know what they're doing, I'd go to a different exterminator company if I were you.
