Sheesh. It's not the entire fandom. There are communities just for Castiel, or Castiel and Dean, so dipping your toes in the fandom doesn't mean jumping into the deep end of Wincest. The SPN fandom does *not* hate people based on their pairing of choice, but so much of LJ seems to think we do.

137. Haha, why? In general I just don't have the attention span to last that many books. Also I think that the integrity of the series is lost if you drag it out for a million books. There are some exceptions, like what Mercedes Lackey does with her Herald books. I like that there are a lot of them, but they're all divided into either stand alones or trilogies. Piers Anthony is another one that does it well. I've only read all of his Incarnations of Immortality, and most of those read like stand alones too.

151. I see where you're coming from, but I have to say this. I don't think the two fandoms can be compared, really. HP is HUGE...bigger than the SPN fandom will ever be. But the major difference in ships and pairings is that Harry Potter had SO many characters to choose from. There wasn't really one major pairing that took over. Plus, ships were fluid. New characters showed up in every book and movie, and people's interests changed back and forth. Most of of the HP fans I knew shipped something, changed their minds, changed their minds AGAIN, and could end up back at their original pairing.

In SPN, you have Sam. And you have Dean. That was pretty much it for two entire seasons. No other characters stuck around long enough to become a pairing. For slash pairings, John and Bobby are older, and they're really the only ones besides demons who showed up in more than one episode. And then they added Castiel, a younger, good looking guy, and we're forced to say, hey! Maybe I'll like shipping him more! Everyone shipped Sam and Dean for so long, because it was one of the few options we had, and everyone got so invested in it. Some can turn away from it, others can't, and some hold on a hell of a lot tighter than others.

I think we all need to remember that as far as slash is concerned, NONE OF IT WILL EVER BE CANON. EVER. Neither ship is a threat to the other, since neither will become reality.

And I'd like to also point out that there are TONS of Dean/Castiel fans out there. Mix up your flist a little. And if people on your flist are bothering you about it, take them off. *gasp* sometimes I think people forget that they have control over who they have friended.

Interesting that there aren't any Sam/Castiel communities or even much discussion. I know Castiel has more scenes with Dean and is a part of Dean's hell story arc, but if the folks who were tiring of just Sam and Dean wanted to ship someone new, why not add Sam to that pool of possible partners for Castiel? I could answer that myself, but I won't because I don't want to start a mini wank right here, lol.
