I realized I was gay when i wanted to jump David (Boreanaz) instead of Sarah Michelle Gellar. ;)

Hetalia

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Axis Powers Hetalia is not what I'd consider racist. I can see why someone would be upset over some of the things, but not understand it; the jokes are based on national stereotypes and prejudices. The characters do not represent their people or their leaders, they are personifications of the typical image of the country in the eyes of the world, and sometimes not even that; UK is not posh and snobby, Germany is not a nazi, and USA isn't a fat fundamentalist. (Although he does eat a lot of hamburgers.) Even Japan gets his share of parody, being unable to properly express his feelings.

I have yet to meet anyone in the Hetalia fandom who's racist, or have even cracked a racist joke; that's not what I'd complain about in this fandom. Those I've seen are very, or have become, interested in history and other countries' cultures, and it's reflected in many of the fanworks. We consider France a pervert, not the French. You have to be tolerable in a fandom like this.

Yes, there is a lot of sexual innuendo in Hetalia, but not worse than most other BL comics, or ecchi for that matter. Some might consider it morally questionable material, but I'd say they're quite prude if they do. (I might add that Hungary considers Chibitalia her younger sister when they're taking that bath.) And fetishism depends a lot on one's own opinion, yes? I personally don't find a chibified boy wearing frilly dresses an object for sexual fantasies, just funny and kind of cute. Holy Roman Empire and young Italy's relationship is btw based on HRE's idolization of Italy's ancestor, ancient Rome - there, even in a fetishistic relationship between two chibis, you find some historical reference.

And finally -- as people have already pointed out, Sealand is a joke. The prospect of something that is barely an island wanting to become an independant nation and get ignored by the other countries is funny. If you think about it, Sealand has never appeared in any comic that references to historical events; he was thrown in as comical relief (um, not that Hetalia needs MORE of the crack) and possibly for Sweden and Finland to adopt. ;3 Speaking about Sweden and Finland, why make a comic about them having a dog? Hetalia isn't JUST about history, and the characters aren't only personifications of nations, they are characters in their own right.

About some greater nations not being included; I can see the frustration there. But think of it: there are many countries in the world, Himaruya can't use them all. Hetalia is very haphazard, the historical events are not chronological. I'll admit I think it'd be more interesting with a Mexico or India character than a Seychelles or Hongkong one. Actually, unlike Sealand, those two are characters I can't see why they're in the series, but that's it; Himaruya uses whatever history he likes. Most comics, especially webcomics, are drawn to please the artist, not the rest of the world.

... And that's it. Just felt like making a thorough explanation, I'll leave the opinions on it to the rest of you. *Shrugs*

*bangs head against desk repeatedly*

You know, fandom will never ruin Supernatural for me, but it's thisclose to ruining itself for me. The only time I have ever been this tempted to leave a fandom was during the great Skater/Jater War of Lost Season 3 (which is still going on really, but hasn't been as bad since then).

In the end I know I don't have the self control to actually leave (I like reading and writing fanfiction way to much), but I swear to god this fandom makes me think really really hard about attempting to.

Just leave it the fuck alone people. I have seen exactly two people openly admit that they hated certain characters because they didn't want them romantically involved with the boys. If you see someone make such an admission, then you can feel about those specific people whatever you want to feel. But if you're making assumption about people's motives based solely on the fact that they disagree with you then you're just blowing smoke out of your ass and you're making yourself look like a fucking twat.

God, this fandom cannot be good for my blood pressure.

145. ...I kind of agree. It's one thing to ship Sam/Dean and another to ship Jensen/Jared; I don't have a problem with shipping Jensen/Jared (I do too) but they're very different people from Sam and Dean!

140. No, you should put them aside for later for sure. If I had read New Moon when I was actually feeling exactly like that, I think I would have gone to bed and stayed there for a week.

133. OMG thank you! I wondered where I'd seen her before she was on Dexter and now I remember!!! And, you're right. It is a rip off of Hustle, but since there is no Hustle, it's worth watching. (Though I was a little disappointed because I thought it was the guy who played Henriksen in it, not the guy who played Jake. Jake is cute but Henriksen was so much hotter.)

129. WHAT????? How can you hate Charlie? Do you hate kittens and puppies and butterflies too? (It's okay, you're allowed to like who you like and hate who you hate, but I really don't get it because I adore him, I think he's sweet and adorable. I like his brother too, but Don is a dog. Which is a part of my love for him, because I also love Jim Kirk and James Bond and Tony Stark...)

126. I've always wanted to see it all.

122. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. But you also forgot political analysis, particularly the variety that implies there must be something wrong with you if you like fandom X in spite of whatever "ism" has been identified in it.

117. Aw. I was in my 20s when the first dolls came out. Don't feel bad about it.

114. You are a good girl. You're not a deviant. But it might be a good idea to bring this up before you get married, because if you are going to be monogamous to one person only for the rest of your life, you may be disappointed if he turns out to be vanilla or a sub himself when it's too late for you to turn back.

[personal profile] cleverthylacine 2008-12-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
115. You know what? These are opinions. Same as yours. You don't have to agree with them. But those of us who like the show the way it is have enjoyed the past few days after the months and months of nothing but butthurt SPN hetshipper "if you hate Character X you're a sexist"/"if you ship Wincest you're a sexist"/"if you don't want new female characters on the team" (THERE IS NO TEAM, HELLO) secrets. I, personally, wanted Jo back, but there were NO people willing to work to get her back without also demanding that she be canon-shipped with Dean, and they had no chemistry, so I and a lot of people who wanted Jo but not Dean/Jo never joined those campaigns. 95% of the bitching about "sexism" and "vagina hate" in SPN fandom comes from people who are irritated that their het OTP is not as popular as Wincest or Dean/Castiel and that the girl character they like will never be as important as the boys are. I can't think of another fandom where the DOMINANT pairing is an incest pairing. Could it be that maybe there is something there, even though it's of course not canon because incest will never be canon on the CW?

The thing that butthurt SPN hetshippers never want to acknowledge is that whether the boys sleep with girls or not, the show is about the boys, and everyone else, regardless of race, gender or age, is supporting cast AT BEST. It's not about romance, it's about two brothers, and the primary emotional development story arc is always going to be about their relationship, not them and the girlfriends you wish they had. You don't have to ship Wincest, but canonically, the show is not and is never going to be One Tree Hill with angel and devil wings. Nor is it going to be Heroes, Star Trek, SG-1, SGA or any other TEAM show. There will never be a main female character on this show because it's not a TEAM show. And pretty much every recurring character of any race or gender who isn't Sam or Dean will probably die or get taken up to heaven or down to hell. That's what SPN IS. It is not Buffy with a classic rock soundtrack, and if that's what you were looking for, you ain't gonna ever like it. Bitching because it doesn't have a five-person team that includes at least two women and two people of colour is like bitching because there are no little grey extra-terrestrials on a horror programme. The structure of the show is about two working-class white male brothers who live in each other's back pockets, not a multiculturally diverse team. Deal with that, or find a fandom that has a team in it. It's also based in an Abrahamic religious worldview, so stop expecting it to give you friendly Wiccans. It's not about Wincest vs. het, it's about people who like the show the way it is and people who think EVERY show needs to have a multiculturally diverse team (with girlfriends and boyfriends) and treat all religious points of view equally. If you feel this way, SPN is not ever going to please you. And the vast majority of the fandom is going to be irritated by any effort to try and make it something it isn't, because we like it the way it is. Not because we're horrible racist sexist jerks, but because it's OKAY for there to be shows that are just about one person, or two people. Not everything is structured around an ensemble cast. And I don't see why it should have to be.

[identity profile] karate0kat.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. SO MUCH THIS!

You rock, and I love you.

And can I just say, though this was hardly your main point, that though I love Dean/Jo as a romantic pairing, I would much rather have totally platonic Jo than no Jo at all. I miss her :( I've seen soooooo many people say they liked her as a friend or little sister character, just not a love interest. I wish they'd try to bring her back as that.

That's an... unique opinion, to say the least. Most people in the fandom (myself included) seem to think that the first season was higher in quality, and the second kind of a train wreck, but an entertaining one.

101. Well, think of it trying to better yourself each outing. That there's more to tackle out there, you know what I'm saying.

105. Sucks but it happens with fandom.

106. You're only giving them power over you. It is silly to think a person ruined a show for you, you the one who let them ruin it for you. You are much to blame as the other person. Seriously.

114. Make sure that you tell him before the two of you get serious. Not every kink sits well with everyone. And wanting to be dominant DOESN'T make you a deviant. Personally, I want a guy who doesn't mind switch it up. But it's best to find a guy who doesn't mind being adventuous in bed. Honestly, I think you don't need to have prematial sex to find the right guy sexually, because the most sexually compatible guy may not even be the guy you want as a spouse. Hell, some of my friends would admit the guy that they want to marry isn't the most compatible sexually. Communication is a cruical, cruical key in relationships. I CAN'T stress this enough, seriously. And if things don't work right in the beginning, there is therapy for it and the two of you must be willing to compromise, the other key to a successful marriage.

118. Trini. ;_;

120. For some odd reason, I think this is awesome.

122. Don't. It comes with the whole human thing and all. I don't regret liking series or whatever because of a few people.

125. I'm probably the opposite of you. I read all secret each day because of my curiousity and all. It's nothing wrong of how either of us do it.

128. You know, I never get the whole projecting thing. Yeah, I like het (along with yuri and BL), but I never was comfortable with projecting myself on characters, I guess I like to be the observer more than anything.

136. Okay, although it's not the fandom's fault for not playing in the sandbox like you exactly want it to be. Leave and no one would fault you for it, you can survive without the fandom. And I sigh of all the people who saying "LOL INTERNAL WANK" when the fandom hasn't even wank about it yet and it's one fan's opinion.

138. People bitch about Lulu/Nunners? Dude, Lulu had the biggest sister complex and Nunners had biggest brother complex. Seriously.

142. You missed the point. The fact Sealand is there because he's so insignificant to the point that his country is a fucking boat. That the actual Sealand did some crazy-ass things to try to get itself recognized as a country.

But I agree that Hidekaz is soooooooooooooooo slooooooooooooooooow with making countries though.

143. This show always tempt me with that $11/hour thing and I can't help thinking that "Fuck, even I made more than that at one time. How can you live on that?" every time I see an ad for it.

146. It's the way of the Gundam fandom. 00 is in the limelight now for being the recent series (and the second Gundam series after the advent of internet fansubs). Even this show's popularity will die down once the next Gundam series takes center stage. Personally, I think because people think of all the Gundam as a huge saga spanding across time and space or whatever so fans tend to move from one to the next.

149. Maybe I'm missing the whole point the fetishization side since the whole kissing scene with Chibitalia and HRE had some signficance with the two and Hungary hugging Italy because he was cute (although later strips reveal she prolly though Italy was a girl). And yeah, Hetalia has some race jokes and stereotype jokes that are played straight sometimes for humor. If that type of humor is not for you, the series isn't as well. Although I think "racist" term is a bit too out there. Although I kinda mulled over the negro was an offensive term though, knowing the history of it.

156. CLAMP and Kimura's styles shall never mix together ever again. Seriously, although Kimura's style totally dominated the second season's design and made it worse.

158. LOL okay.

159. IAWTS^100000000, because it would be awesome.

161. I snorted because I definitely know my mother didn't play it legit ever. Me, 2-3 of my Sims' family die before I get off the game for the day.

Not!Secrets: You would be surprised how many people would call Alcuard a Gary Stu though....

138 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-30 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
You should see what happens if someone tries to bring up that Lulu may have more than brotherly feelings for his sister. People go ballistic. Nevermind that it's a pretty common theme in even mainstream anime and manga, and that Lulu said 'Aishiteru' to Nunnally, a declaration of love that, in Japanese culture, is largely associated with romantic love. Now I'm not saying that people have to like it, or ship it, but even so much as questioning Lulu's feelings for his sister can get you a sackload of shit.

And then there are the reviews for the fanfics.

114: Um, hon, I hate to break it to you, but thatis how "good girls" like it. "Good girls" are supposed to be submissive. Our whole culture is kinked that way. It's us girls who want to dominate, or who switch, who are the "bad" ones. There is nothing deviant about being the way the culture says you should be.

I assumed that the part that wasn't right for a "good girl" was that she was thinking about it at all.

You make a good point though. It's hardly deviant in our culture for a woman to want a man to take control.
