I still prefer the book, but I think the show made it far more accessible in general.

It's odd cause I technically like the show better, but prefer the Aziraphale and Crowley from the book - especially Crowley. Just can't unsee David Tennant I guess.

In Gaiman terms I felt this about Stardust. Enjoyed the book but enjoyed the film just a bit more (despite the presence of Ricky Gervais, which usually slightly hinders my liking things.)

I've LOVED reading since as long as I was able to do it but as I age am getting more chilled out about adaptions. Ok, some of them range from mediocre to terrible but I think it's fine to accept that some of them either improve or enhance the source material. If that makes me a fake reader in the eyes of some, I don't care.

I enjoyed seeing Crowley and Aziraphale brought to life, but just about everything else fell short for me. Casting felt off, the child actors and their scenes were not done well, IMO, and the special effects budget was not what it needed to be. There are so many things that were just better in my head than the adaptation managed.

Same. I didn't like the book (I bounce off Terry Pratchett hard even though I don't want to). I have just started watching the TV series and I like it.

Haha, same, I find the book insufferably cutesy, so the charm and chemistry of the lead actors in the show makes it much more preferable to me.

I liked the series because it didn't have the "burning f*ggots" joke and the mention of the them entering puberty

There are certainly elements the show improves on, especially some of the... shall we say DATED things like the racist car, but as a whole I like the book better.

That said, I think the show could have benefited from taking more liberties with the source material. A lot of the dialogue was lifted word for word from the book, and there are points where it sounds forced. The God narration seems to exists solely to preserve certain bits of the book's prose, rather than being necessary to understand the story. Then there's the shoehorning of "didn't so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards" into dialogue. It doesn't work nearly as well when Crowley says it as it does as a humorous description of the character. None of that makes the show unwatchable, but I suspect Gaiman was perhaps a little too focused on preserving the evidence of Pratchett's touch to see how it held the whole back. And I say this as someone who was never able to get into Gaiman's books but has read most of Pratchett's.

Same. I've never been able to get through books by either of these authors, but I liked the cast so I gave the show a try. Loved it. Tried the book. STRUGGLED to finish it.

You are definitely not alone. I read it, and it was just so boring; I couldn't get past the writing to see even the bones of the epic story that everyone else seems to see.
