129. I dunno, it doesn't seem to be a Euro-weaboo thing to me. Opera involves music, acting, and an understanding of language and culture, right? So why would learning more about it, especially the language, hurt anyone? I guess if the opera lovers you know are pretentious then that's one thing, but I just can't see the reasoning behind not wanting someone to expand their linguistic skills for their own personal like of music.
(*personally hates opera, but not the point* :D)

149. Exciting. How exciting you are.

151. W-why?... D:

164. Hey, coincidence, just got back from seeing this movie! I thought it was well-acted and I liked the music, even though several parts were obviously dramatized for the silver screen. I didn't see why it was so bad, but then again, most of my historical WWII knowledge comes from the Allied POV and never touched on inner rebellions. I'm curious to know more about why the movie was inaccurate, if you're willing to tell me more about it. :)

Yeah, the show's implication that male/male relationships (Jack/Ianto, Jack/John) are just about sex, but male/female relationships are real love . . . that's SO AWESOME. And not at all the same old homophobic bullshit that's been peddled for years.

The men are in fandoms where more women spend their money.

112.
That's a cute picture. Source/original please?

121.
All the meisters except Tieria are currently rather boring.

123.
I don't know your fandom but I think it's their face. Nothing else matters in the Asian entertainment industry. Fat people don't even count as people aside from a countably finite number of classic big names, most of whom are close to retirement age if not already deceased.

129.
I don't see anything wrong with doing that unless it gets in the way of their daily lives. What makes someone a weeaboo are the flaunting and constant reminders to everyone and their dead grandmothers how much more he or she apparently knows about a certain foreign culture or language. There's no crime in learning a new language because you weren't raised speaking it if it allows you to enjoy your hobby more.

132.
Prince Diamond for the win. I prefer the manga version though.

134.
And that is why my playlist has nothing but legally free classical music. Regrets, nothing, etc.

139.
There are sites other than tinypic, imageshack, and photobucket. Look in the community profile, FAQ... somewhere.

STFU. Any reason for anyone to develop a desire to learn anything is a GOOD reason. Says the person who worked on her English so she could read Miranda Richardson interviews and is now becoming a foreign language teacher.

The first thing I said to my friends after reading that book was "The story was terrible, but Garrett and Kate- only good part."

[identity profile] mizuno-caitlin.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
129. This is the dumbest secret I've ever seen. That sounds like a beautiful reason to learn a language.
aeslis: (Japan)

[personal profile] aeslis 2009-01-21 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I can kind of understand where the OP is coming from. Having learned Japanese for a variety of reasons, it's kind of insulting when someone is learning it JUST for anime, and ends up disregarding all the other aspects of the culture. But then if someone is really into Italian or German opera I'd imagine they'd--hopefully--have more knowledge of the rest of the culture.

162

[identity profile] bkwmkiwi.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. Oh man. What a maths nerd. I hadn't even considered that before. BELIEVE YOU ME, if I should ever produce a TV show (not that it is likely in anyway), if it makes it to the 14th episode of the third season, PI WILL BE IN THERE.

[identity profile] rhoux.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know this is supposed to be a troll about people learning Japanese to watch anime...

But I don't think you can draw a parallel between the two. The two situations are different to me. I think Opera is extremely far removed from a tv show or a movie (though it can be argued that there are some anime that can be considered masterpieces, but most are not, just as most Western animations are not). I still think learning a complete different language just to watch a tv show is a bit lame.

And I don't see why there is a big uproar about that. Who cares if people think it's lame? I'm not trying to stop anyone from doing it. I'm not badmouthing them. I just personally find it a bit silly.

On the other hand, being exposed to Japanese through anime and taking an interest in the language as a whole seems perfectly fine to me.

Good luck to anybody who does learn Japanese to watch anime in it's original form! I've nothing against you.

Holy shit that's wrong! Wrong, wrong, wrong in so many ways!

Aw man! I need to wash my brain out now. I really hope I can get that image out of my brain. Thanks for the nightmares I'll likely have, OP!

Poor, poor MJ! He needs Mr. Cook to make it all better now! :D

(P.S. Sorry about that strange blabbering. It's just that my brain spazzed a little when I saw the secret.)

102 -- Ha! Don't let Crazy Tom Cruise hear you say that. He'll sue you!

109 -- I didn't know about this until reading the comments in this post. As something of a Trek fan, I think I have to go kill myself now.

126 -- I am in constant pain every day. It's so severe that even with the perscription meds I take, it still fucking hurts. I can barely walk, and can't walk at all after about 10-15 minutes of it. I can't do much at all with my arms, either. Just typing this post hurts like a mofo and is taking forever. And yeah, being in constant pain makes me cranky sometimes and I don't feel like dealing with other people's bullshit a lot of the time. HOWEVER. I do not use that as an excuse to be an abusive, aggressive, egotistical jackass who wouldn't know professionalism if it jumped up and bit me. There's a difference between being cranky and going out of one's way to be cruel to those around us. House can go fuck himself and if he finds it so trying to be around other people and their problems, he needs to find another line of work or retire.

135 -- Hee! Yeah, I love me some Stargate: Atlantis, but Farscape it is not! Both SGA and Torchwood are silly, delicious brain candy and people should just relax, get over themselves, and have fun!

137 -- I love them too! I used to not care either way, but I've really come to love Gwen/Jack over the last season. I always hated Jack/Ianto, though. It just feels like mediocre fanfic shoehorned in the middle of the episodes. Bleh. I will say, though, that I appreciate seeing an actual bisexual man on TV (or two, if you count Ianto, although it's not really clear if he's really bi or if this is a one-time thing for him).

162: I love you OP! Although you make me want to go through my box sets and check for this. Not to mention I will now be highly disappointed if Supernatural doesn't make a PIE! mention in 3.14.

140. SERIOUSLY. Luckily I don't know anyone who does.

129. I love how everyone's getting all indignent about this troll. Does this mean that people who want to learn Japanese to see Japanese theatre don't come under the weeaboo blanket anymore? (Anyway, anyone who thinks Europe is the epitome of culture should take a package break to Ibiza.)

149: If you don't have the melancholy, you are not a living version of her. It's the part of her character that limits her.

154: If I can find a way to recover from PTSD you can find a way to better your life.

Both: She is simply a tsundere in the extreme, she never wants to admit how caring she is. Fortunately her character grows.

123. Awww, OP. Why so srs about actors in a musical about tennis, played with BALLS OF LIGHT. They all have their good points.

p.s. Aiba fixed his teeth. :Dd And I think he's cute and not more stupid backstage than any of the others!

I'm totally with you. I just finished the series, and I adored it to pieces. Reborn couldn't hold my attention past book 2.

136.

Are you fucking NUTS?!

Have you ever actually spoken to feminist activists online? the majority of them, I will admit, are cool and Doing It Right, but the loudest and most... easilly listened to for want of a better term, they're just BAT SHIT CRAZY.

The kind that think is a woman looks a certain way they are inviting rape? the kind that a man can be shown to be a deviant simply by watching porn? The kind that will consider a girl a whore if she's had cosmetic surgere? We've all met these types. I genuinly believe they're in the minority (I have to cause I like considering myself a feminist, and I dont think I could like with my self if these people were truly representitive of the bulk of contemporary feminism) but still, I dont want to live in a world were they have a sway over how the world should be changed, I can hardly live with existing online with them.

Anon cause I dont wanna get fucked up by these people.

140. there are SIDES?! I was thinking it was a friendship (... unless you mean sheldon vs penny?)

142. Im behind on this. Whats going on in that pic?

163. me too.

164. just so you know, the death star wasn't really blown up, and bruce wayne never lost his paents either. Films are fucking misleading aren't they?

I mean, I get that its based on real people and all, but it is first and for most entertainment. If people wanted to be educated on this, they'd watch a documentary. If it's not a documentary, assume the facts will be twisted for maximum entertainment value. If thats not cool, seriously, go watch a dcumentary.

142. Im behind on this. Whats going on in that pic?

That's Ruby from Supernatural being tortured.

I don't like the character personally, but I agree with 142 - anyone who hates a character so much they want them stripped, humiliated and tortured? There is something WRONG going on there.
