You know, as much as I love xkcd, I always kind of thought that particular comic missed something blaringly, obviously obvious: If you want a music collection that you can count on, buy the bloody CDs! You can export them into any MP format you want with just the average computer, and then you always have a perfect back-up (as long as you take care of them instead of being an idiot) if something bad happens.

134. Actually, don't a lot of CDs now have copyright protection so that it's just as illegal to export any files or make back-up copies of them? And then, of course, you just have the same problem again with YOU DID AN EVIL ILLEGAL THING BLARGH. I just think it's all sort of ridiculous, though I do agree that definitely, CD quality is best. If I think I want to buy a CD I'm probably going to listen to the songs online or download them to see if the CD itself is actually worth getting, then shell out the money if it is. \O_o/ *weirdo*
