What are some words writers should stop using in their
porny fics and what should they use instead? Do you have a preference for how to refer to male and female genitalia?

any form of 'hnnnng' to refer to a character moaning, just say 'x moaned/groaned/gasped/etc' FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. it's not sexy, it's ridiculous.

I wish like hell that people wouldn't type out what their characters moan during sex, especially not in all caps. Just... "[name here] moaned" is fine. No need for, "AHHHHHHHHH!" Frodo cried out in ecstasy, "RIGHT THERE, GOLLUM! HNNNNNNGGGG YEEESSS..."

I wouldn't necessarily say stop using because I think people can write whatever they want, and this is more a matter of personal preference. But personally not a fan of overly flowery language, particularly in reference for genitals.

For what to call genitals, for penis favorites are cock and dick, also cool are penis or shaft. For vagina, honestly my favorite is cunt, but I'm okay with vagina, folds, or possibly occasionally hole. I really hate pussy because it is way too flowery and soft and doesn't make me think of sex at all.

Really, I just like blunt, harsh, and to the point. That to me is sexy.

I'm not a fan of overly flowery prose when it comes to describing cunt. Like, cunt is fine. Just cunt, not an exuberant blushed rose kissed in morning dew.

On a related note. It's amazing how many writers completely ignore testicles. They, ah, do exist and it's good to mention them at least once in a blue balling moon.

See I'm in a weird position because I tend to write in medieval-esque fantasy settings and so a lot of the common slang terms seem out of place. Some of them I can fall back on, sure, but right now I'm trying to figure out how a generally reserved 1300s gentleman would refer to his boyfriend's cock when he's really horny and impatient and I am so lost. Maybe "cock" is good enough. Not too lowbrow but not formal either, just not sure if it's period-appropriate.

Fandom gets me thinking about the most random but very specific things. Similar situation not long ago caused me to learn the f-bomb has been around about that long and wasn't really considered particularly profane at the time. *shrug*

cock and dick are fine but dear god I have yet to find a word for the ol vag that doesn't give me the screaming heebie-jeebies. cunt is surprisingly the least weird; I hate pussy because it makes me think of male-gaze porn, and I am absolutely not at all about twat or snatch, they're even more disgustingly male-gazey and I can't even explain why except that the only places I've seen these words outside of bad fanfic is from misogynistic males on the internet.

honestly, as impersonal and dehumanizing as it is, I would take hole over any other word.

Just preference, but I generally like “scent” or even “smell” over “odor”. “Come” over “cum” for the verb.

And now I can only think of a Funny or Die improv skit where one woman asks another with a raised eyebrow and the uttermost disdain “You use the word cunt to refer to a pussy?”

The only thing that's a huge no for me is blatant euphemisms.

Also, this isn't a word so much as a weak-writing quirk, but when we start getting porny descriptions of the POV character that inexplicably break out of close third, I back-click immediately. If you're writing in close third, and your POV character goes to masturbate, and we get a description of his "tight little hole" I am out of there. You can go, "He shivered as he worked his finger in deeper. God, he was tight. It'd been way too long since he'd done this," because that is something a person might feasibly think while fingering themself. But if you go, "He pressed his face into the pillow, smothering a whine as two fingers filled his tight little hole," I just cannot, because you've broken close third for the sake of horniness, and now we don't have a POV. We're not in your POV character, but we're also not not in your POV character. We are in narrative purgatory.

This is too vague to count as any sort of a hard rule, but I generally like it best when the smut is in the right... I don't know the right term, narrative voice? When it has the right tone, I suppose, something that matches the source material. Smutfic for an American canon using 'dick', a British canon using 'cock', Xianxia can even get away with 'pillar' - but it all just needs to fit with the canon, for me.
Which is weird when you think about it, but oh well.
