131. This is the case for almost every fandom, though. There's only so many different stories/plots you can write for a pairing in a fandom. And from the examples given, I take it you've been hanging around the kink meme... where the things written about AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE SERIOUS WORKS (75% of the time, anyway).

Sometimes people write AU/OOC junk to get some creative juices flowing. I know I do. Are you going to gripe about fanart too?

You've got a point that it happens in a lot of fandoms. I love crack; I ask for dumb stuff too, sometimes.

The genderswap thing was a little weird in that it had this vibe that people were so desperate for something new a whole bunch of people just latched onto it. And then there are the responses to some of the prompts, "that sounds like something they'd never do, but seconded anyway!" -- on prompts that aren't crack, either.

I just wonder why people keep reading when they aren't even the characters they supposedly like so much anymore. Take a break and come back in a month with some fresh perspective, huh?

*sigh* Don't you people who get so sick of P/E [or any other popular pairing] ever get sick of complaining about it?

First of all, not everyone in the fandom actively writing for P/E is 'clinging' to it. Some of the are actually new to the games. Older fans don't get to be lords and masters of all the old fluff scenarios because they got there first. "We already wrote a story about them ice skating, so no one wants to read about YOUR take on them ice skating."

I'm sorry you feel like every P/E being written now is Gen A/Gen B. In every popular pairing, you'll have a lot of fic that skims the surface of characterization, relying more on the idea of the character rather than developing the character further than the canon took them. But I still see a lot of believable Edgeworths and Phoenixes being written out there, many of whom are quite different than my own personal understanding of them, that the author makes me believe. Although there is at least one good writer whose characterization drives me up walls, that's off point

I honestly don't see much of a difference between all the P/E I read, though, and the other 'ship fics I read, even with rarer pairings moar Mia/Phoenix plz. A love story is pretty much a love story. Cue the longing, the pining, the flirting, and/or the confessions. Yeah, they are going to sound a little different coming from Franziska to Phoenix or Bratworth to.. I dunno.. Diego, but the same things are going to be happening.

And my last point I admit probably doesn't apply to very many people outside myself, but I'll say it anyway. The reason I turn to fandom is largely for the AUs. When I'm in the mood for something that fits perfectly into canon... I generally look to the canon. When I want to see characters I already love turning into werewolves and somehow dealing with it while remaining true themselves, I look to fandom. Not that all AUs manage to preserve the characters' identities through such transformations-- but I do so love an AU that does.

Though I won't defend the OoC stuff. I don't get that myself. Or the genderswap AUs, really, since they're typically the same as the non-AU versions.... but again, off point.

No matter how many times I see the trope title, I can't get behind the idea of P3/P4 protagonists as "heroic mimes". They talk PLENTY. It's just up to you to make them say something. They're not even anywhere near the same category of silent hero like Link or Crono.

Not necessarily a comment on the secret, but something I've been noticing people throw around. :\ It doesn't sit right with me.

The thing is, they never say anything that you don't input yourself. So it's not him saying it, it's you. I can never see a choice I make as representative of the character's speech or his personality. And he talks at other points, but he never gets a dialogue box, let alone a voiceover, so there's no sense of the way he speaks, to emulate in the dialogue of a fic.

So maybe he's a Heroic Puppet, instead :P
