What were some of the most disappointing pieces of media for you?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-19 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's secret #7. Books, movies, games, music, whatever you were once hyped for but ultimately did not meet your expectations. They may or may not be 'bad' per say, but yes, they were certainly disappointing for you.

I've started watching Steven Universe recently, and even though its cute with some pretty good designs, a large part of me doesn't get how the show got as popular as it did.
I mean, I get that it's probably because of the queer representation boosted by sites like Tumblr at it's peak - but the writing is a bit... bland? Idk it's not bad and I'm still on the first series so it might get better, it's just overall not what I expected.

Hobbit movies definitely are up there.

The DCU movies. Superman is my favorite superhero. But the DCU movies just haven't been good, apart from the first Wonder Woman movie being good and Aquaman being semi-decent.

The Rise of Skywalker. Ugh. I loved The Last Jedi, so I was hopeful we were going to get a good conclusion to the trilogy. Instead, we got the hands down worst Star Wars movie of them all. TROS is just a bad movie. There are a few scenes that are enjoyable, but the overall plot is bad.

Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney. Two series that I liked a lot, together. Unfortunately I think the writing unfortunately took after the bad parts of Professor Layton rather than the good parts of Ace Attorney.

(It's not really BAD bad, pardon to anyone who enjoyed it. This is only my personal opinion.)

More spoilers for Professor Layton games.

Star Trek Into Darkness

I really will hate that fucking movie until my dying day

Little Dragons Cafe, aka, the worst PS4 game I have the displeasure of owning. It's not fair, it has such a cute concept and art style but plays like shit.

Final Fantasy 9. I'm just... very meh about it. Everyone hyped it up as a return to old school FF, which I do see. But I barely remember anything about FF4 or FF6, and didn't even finish FF5. I tried to push through FF9 but I am just not connecting with any of it. And grinding is a joke so far. Maybe it gets better at a certain point, but I've just put aside for now so I can play other games instead.

And of course Game of Thrones season 8, which is objectively bad (with the possible exception of 8.2).

The Conduit. Never had I played a game that had so much of what hardcore Nintendo fans ask for (especially in third-party games) and so little of what they want.

And it's not like High Voltage wasn't trying! They did their homework on the alien conspiracy references and the Washington DC geography! But I kept asking myself why I should care about what was going on in the campaign, especially once the tone shifted from X-Files to Halo, and the multiplayer could have saved it if you could play it offline.

First thing that came to mind was Star Trek: Into Darkness, and I was reminded of FFIX by an anon elsewhere...

Another I just remembered though - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I get that I was not the target age group by about 25 years, but I had friends about my age who were really way into it and thought it was absolutely amazing and said it was definitely better than the usual kids' fare. So finally I asked someone where I could find it to check it out, and watched a couple episodes and... it wasn't BAD, it was just pretty much what I'd have expected from a decently-put-together cartoon aimed at young girls and don't really understand what made so many people of my age of all genders latch onto it.

Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Kingdom Hearts, Yuri on Ice... Too many to count really?

I really enjoyed Rainbow Rowell’s book Carry On. I was super excited for the sequel. Then I read it and I could physically feel my excitement disappearing. It was horribly boring and not what I wanted out of a sequel. I hadn’t felt so pissed off at spending money on a book since Breaking Dawn.

The first Harry Potter movie. I was twelve and beyond excited for it. I'd been counting down the days in my journal for the better part of a year, lol. And then it was awful. It was just all wrong, to me, in almost every way. I still feel that way about the HP movies to this day. They just feel so clunky and fakey and poorly adapted. I have a weird affection for them because they're part of my childhood and I do love the story and they're a visual rendering of that story, so there is this weird fondness for them...but I simultaneously hate just about every choice that was made in making them.

I Want To Believe (the second X-Files movie). That was during the peak of my X-Files obsession, and I stupidly allowed myself to get excited and to think maybe it would be really good. It was not. It was not good at all. I never did watch the new seasons, so I have no opinion on those (except that fellow X-Phile friends told me S10 was horrendous and that they wished they'd never watched it, so there's that).

Halloween (2018) - It's a direct sequel to the original 1978 movie, which I was a little dubious about, but willing to go with. And then, just, almost every choice they made with it, starting with the name, left me nonplussed and/or annoyed.

Every single Jane Eyre adaptation ever. They are not supposed to be pretty! They're not supposed to fuck on the drawing room floor before she leaves! Etc/ etc.

What are some of the most 'content warning'-heavy pieces of media you've enjoyed?

While they're probably not the 'heaviest' I've read and watched, off the top of my head 'Necrophilia Variations' by Supervert is up there for books and 'Flower of Flesh and Blood' by Hideshi Hino for film.

If fanfic counts, I read a ton of dark fanfic featuring noncon, torture, and all manner of stuff that has to be warned for.

For actually official media, Game of Thrones (until the last season), the early seasons of Vikings, some of the horror movies I like have warning-worthy content (although I don't do torture-porn "horror" movies), American Horror Story, Jessica Jones, Lovecraft Country, Spartacus, and Hannibal.

Criminal Minds should probably have more warnings than it does, but I still love it.

And book wise, I've read all sorts of super dark fantasy with all sorts of content that is the type that is warned for.

I've watched plenty of much darker shit, but I think Slither actually might've had the most weird shit in it.

Oviposition
Forced impregnation
Forced inflation (to the point of bodily explosion)
So. Much. Vore.

And like, it was a horror movie, so none of this stuff was kink per se. But the vibe was...like two steps to the right of kink?

Not totally sure I enjoyed it, though. I was entertained, I think? But I don't think I'll watch it again unless a friend wants to make a drinking game out of it or something.

Clockwork Orange.

HBO's Rome.

True crime books. The psychology fascinates me.

I've been reading a bunch of fanfiction that reads like it was written by Ted Bundy, and I enjoy it for the same reason I enjoy true crime, so that probably counts too.

HBO's Rome for sure, woo there is a lot of child abuse referenced in there oh my gosh that always takes me by surprise.

But also I have a HUGE soft spot for the Saw series. Sure it's unrepentant torture porn mascaraing as horror but I watched all 7 movies in one week back in 2012 and it was enthralling.

I trusted a very coy positive review of Happiness which decided the entire premise was a spoiler. I was therefore woefully unprepared when I watched the film.
