She is 16?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-06 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She's actually 15 isn't she? "The law says you must be married by your sixteenth birthday..." and to a PRINCE~.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It never occurs to me that Jasmine is suppose to be 16 - but then again the concept of age is wild in the older Disney movies going backwards from the 90s. Like I found out that Snow White is suppose to be 14 years old a couple of weeks ago when she just doesn't seem remotely like a teenager.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, don't think most people think about a character's age unless they're in a setting that makes it obvious, like a school. That includes the people writing the characters. Whoever wrote Aladdin wasn't scripting everything thinking "and now SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Jasmine will wear a sexy outfit and kiss the older villain..." They gave her an age, made it young enough for kids to relate to it, and forgot it because it's irrelevant to everything else.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
As a kid I always thought Jasmine and other Disney characters were adults. Like you think 20-year-olds are practically dead old too when you're young. The movies were aimed at kids so look at them through kid's eyes.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah to be fair, when I was 14 I thought being 16 was essentially turning into an adult - so at a much younger age I probably would have thought that 16 was old anyways.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's...normal to be kissing when you're 16.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You're missing a lot of context there, friend.

It actually says "Next birthday" and doesn't put a year on it. I feel like it does say 16 somewhere but maybe I'm conflating it with Ariel's "I'm 16 years old!" rant in Little Mermaid.

Looking up in Disney wiki has her listed at 16. Though google says she was originally 15 so might have had a year added on for 'maturity'

Though I just grossed myself out finding out Aladdin is 18 regardless.

I age her up in my mind because her being 15/16 ruins it for me personally. In fact, even 18 is too young for me, personally. Not so much because of the sexual component (18-year-olds have the right to sexual autonomy imo), but because it's just hard for me to take any of it seriously when they're both so young. It doesn't feel real. They don't feel real. So I prefer to think of Jasmine as 20 going on 21, and Aladdin somewhere in that range as well.

But do you.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
People should remember when the story is set too. You cannot really look at Aladdin with modern eyes, since history makes things different. Thus it doesn't even matter if Jasmine was 14 and Aladdin say 30. Would still work time-wise.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Cartoons should just never mention age.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I tend to agree. Just let them be whatever age the viewer thinks they are. It would make fandom discussion and fanfic characterization extremely...variable, but idk that might be kind of fun, in a total-shit-show sort of way.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
That happened with something (I want to say Genshin Impact? but don't quote me on that) and fans got upset and started hounding the creative team, including voice actors who technically have no official say in what's canon, because they *needed* to know the characters' ages for shipping reasons and were very disturbed that the higher-ups wouldn't let tell them whether they could safely ship the characters without committing pedophilia.

I don’t think I’ve ever read any kind of Disney princess fic but now I REALLY want to read Jasmine/Jafar!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
Same, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Disney animated character ages are really something. It really changes the context of the story of Beauty and the Beast for me to learn the 'selfish prince' is transformed into a beast at 11 (he and the castle staff are transformed for 10 years and the rose blooms until his 21st birthday and wilt away).

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That was a small child who wouldn't let in a weird stranger who knocked on his door in the middle of the night. That's not cruel, that's sensible!

I feel like it only makes sense in the context of medieval monarchies, where they had very unlucky monarchs and therefore very young kings and an 11 year old head of state with no regents being rude could legitimately start a war.

which makes monarchies seem absolutely absurd.

16 is grown

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
16 is a young adult and effectively grown and people should accept that.

Eh, I'm firmly in the "please stop calling teenagers 'children'" camp, but I disagree with you on this. Like, are you trolling? Because your stance feels extremely over-simplistic to me.

Re: 16 is grown

Definitely don't agree. I'm not saying they should be treated like children, because they're not. Nor am I trying to shame anyone who thinks 16 is old enough to start having experiences in things like romance, because that is an old enough age for that to be completely normal.

But being "grown" takes more time than 16 years of anyone's life. It's more complicated than that. Nobody is completely mature at that age, emotionally, sexually, or otherwise. But that's okay, because the late teens are a good time to build experience that will lead to that eventual maturity.

Yeah... the only people I see argue this point emphatically are grown-ass adults who want to be able to perv on TEENagers without consequence, and I am never going to agree with that tyvm.

They're not kids, but they're not adults, not by a long shot at that age.
