No, that side is just a fucking stupid and can't see it because they're so embroiled with fighting 'THE ENEMY' and seeing themselves as perpetual victims. No one on either side 'wins' in this, everyone is too over-invested and needs to get offline for a few hours at least.

Yup. I'd be a 'anti' or a 'pro-shipper' purely depending on who I happen to be talking to at the time. Anyone seriously defining themselves with either binary needs to get off the internet for a bit and do literally anything else.

I mean, this sounds less like them and more like you need to do some unfollowing/muting/blocking. It's very easy to ignore their news if you want that or are willing to put some systems in place but if it wasn't them it would be another kpop group dominating, overexposed and annoying you it seems.

Finally being able to go back to a movie theater again. Hopefully in time for Eternals and Dune, though I doubt it.

The Amazon Tolkien series. Can't wait.

All the other big fantasy shows coming soon. Wheel of Time, etc.

Having enough disposable income to afford a new Ipod. I may be able to buy it in a month, fingers crossed. I miss having an Ipod and getting to store gigs and gigs of music and listen to all of it.

The first time I get to do an individual hearing in court. My hearings so far and for the next few months are masters. I'm excited for the opportunity to get to fully present a case in court.

Wow, that's really horrifying. Some of the shit that's been done to this guy is stuff I wouldn't even support doing to Trump. Which is really saying something considering if Trump was on fire I wouldn't piss on him to save him.

It doesn't have to be a big part of your identity lmao. Do you agree that telling people to kill themselves because of what they ship is wrong? Congrats you're a proshipper, that's all it takes. You don't have to go around talking about it all the time, that's just what you are.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Holy crap. I hope that dude's got a good support system because that's absolutely insane.

NAYRT

I take it that you didn't watch the video? Sarah Z did address this very same comment about how it's all facets of a person who understands fiction's impact on society, both in terms of it not harming people (most fanfic), or sometimes harming people (The Turner Diaries).

Another part that you should take to mind from the video is how Sarah Z said that proshipper and anti is just modern day broadstrokes taken in order to write off a person entirely. We moved past many historical discriminations (my own words, not Sarah Z's), but the urge to broadstroke, stereotype, and assign a whole list of qualities (such as makes death threats, enjoys pedo shit, literally committing genocide, etc.) to people in fandom based the tiniest possible reasons hasn't gone away.

Lastly, I think that you disproved your own point about "can't both-sides", because you let the 'proshippers' who harassed Sarah Z off the hook by saying "It's like dismissing feminism and everyone who calls themselves a feminist because there are some bad feminists, when feminism actually just means you want gender equality" (essentially, a loud minority), while also saying that every single anti is bad because of a loud minority.

If it's not part of your identity then why do you feel the need to defend it? I will not take either label in this stupid, petty online 'war' that's filled with morons who need something better to do with their time.

Very much agree. I though that video was extremely spot-on and well made.

You should see the death threats that Sarah Z got from proshippers lmao. Also, fuck off, I don't think that jerkin' it to certain types of porn makes you a bad person, but also I don't want to associate with you based on your ships and bad takes. If you ever have a disagreement with someone, that means you're an anti.

I've known a few...

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
For the most part, I wish those that cross over and file off their fanfic for publishing well, but to the two that used several of us on their journey and then dropped us, fuck off, and I'm glad the romance book world has basically ignored you.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty petty.

I think that anyone who chooses to actively label themselves as proshippers are their very own Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Antis are the externalization they use to attack others, while considering themselves free of criticism.

grammar mistake

Despite everything, I think that Fandom!Secrets has made me a better person. I started off as pretty much a dumb and very autistic teenager making dumb posts, but the anonymous nature of F!S helped me a lot in terms of learning from mistakes and how to just let things go. No matter the differences of opinion, I do appreciate what positive influence this place has been.

That's certainly a take.

As a Kpop fan (multi-stan), I generally am able to escape most BTS stuff. But then again, I stick to my groups and my main group is relatively small and trying their best to be unproblematic so we don't really dip into the hate game with any other idols.

With that said, I can understand the general distaste for BTS. They're regarded as this positive, wonderful image of Kpop in Western culture but they're just another run-of-the-mill actually really problematic group due to being owned by a label just as problematic. Kpop is a cog in the capitalist machine. In no ways can you consume Kpop "ethically". ARMY has a tendency to be too overly defensive of what the group does, and they get away with a lot. I think BTS is capable of good things and they have done good things, but I am of the opinion it's for the most part cynical. They're making a lot of bank and that's all that matters. The BTS members aren't perfect angels who only advocate for positivity and love. They're human beings selling an image and that's good that they can create positivity but the cult-like following they get is really problematic. There is no accountability to their bad actions. I saw one incident where one member grab a fan's hair aggressively...it left a bad taste in my mouth. It was brushed off that the group and that fan have a "deep" connection and it was playful...what I saw told a different story and that was enough to make me feel cautious about BTS. And I know this is only one incident but given how it was handled and so quickly brushed off (and given how big ARMY is), there are way more questionable occurances that have happened and gone unnoticed and unreported. It can be said for any Kpop act, but it's not hard to say that the more money a group makes the less accountability there is. There's a lot of hands on deck and a lot of money at stake, think about how much will slip through the cracks and how many people will be willing to cover up some questionable/bad things that happen behind the scenes.

Don't put these idols on pedestals. They're human beings and if they're treated like they're unstoppable/untouchable they will likely do really shitty things and those things can catch up to them.

I used to have anti opinions. I never harassed anyone, and I only expressed my anti opinions on my own LJ, but I definitely had anti opinions.

At this point I’ve been pro-ship for five or six years. I’m still entirely squicked by all the stuff I used to be anti about, but YKINMKATIOK.

A couple of years ago I started shipping a very controversial pairing that’s viewed as vile and “pedophilic” by the vast majority of antis. If people who knew me when I had anti opinions knew about my current OTP, they’d assume I was showing my hypocrisy.

But I’m not. For one, I changed my views way before I started shipping this pairing, and for two, I would’ve been okay with this ship back then, too. I was always fine with this particular controversial dynamic (extreme age gaps but loving, legal, and consensual).

It doesn’t bother me that much to think of people finding out I used to have anti opinions. But the idea of people thinking I only changed my tune because I got into a controversial ship does bother me. I changed my views by thinking about the matter a lot and listening to what people were saying. My personal tastes are what they've always been.

Even leaving aside the difficulty of turning a fic into an original I think a lot of people way underestimate the difference between popularity with a fannish audience and popularity with a wider audience. Yes, 50 Shades, but I think sometimes people forget that just because your fanfic for super popular slash ship of the moment gets a ton of kudos and reviews that doesn't mean that the random general audience out there is also going to be all over it without the fandom angle to lean on. For example, lots of people like Marvel movies but in comparison to all the people who watch those films the percentage of people who also like even bigger pairings like Stucky is probably not nearly as large as someone inside fandom thinks, and when you then take away the fandom angle is this really that appealing to anyone else.

Also arguably being a Twilight fic probably helped 50 Shades in this regard, Twilight itself is sorta wish-fulfillment 'imagine yourself as the bland lead' as a story so it's way easier to sand the numbers off because the fans aren't so much attached to Edward and Bella as they are Hot Vaguely Dangerous Lead and Imagine The Female Lead Is You. I think it's easier to sell Edward Expy and Bella Expy to general audiences because they don't have much character to begin with in the original canon and you're going for the audience who likes that, whereas a fic about two very specific leads with more complex canon characterization is going to be much harder to sell to audiences who don't already know these characters.

My brother and his wife are having another child in October.

They are naming the child a certain name that appears in a popular video game franchise my brother and I both have played since we were children. He knows this particular character is not just my favorite franchise character, but of any video game. And he picked this name for his child. (Same spelling and everything so there's no mistake).

I have written graphic noncon of this character.

He doesn't know THAT.

How am I supposed to have this kid in my life when I know that?

I am so at a loss as of what to do.

After watching In The Heights, I've realized I don't want movie adaptations of musicals.

I just want recordings of the actual musicals.

Sometimes you just don't get along with people. It's a chemistry issue. Don't feel bad about it, OP.
