as with anything in human nature, I think it's possible to stop if the main drivers of such things made a conscious effort to refuse to cover it, make money off it, etc. given that humans are also inherently greedy and will make money off the worst things, that's the part I don't see changing.

before pop celebs it was royals. royalty and their courts were the trend-setters, fashion followed what they did. that apparently goes back as far as the pharaohs so humans have been doing this stupid looking-for-trends-from-our-admired-heroes thing for at least 5000 documented years. we can be better, but will we?

Not OP, but I'm not going to watch a show where I need to desensitize myself to one of the main characters. Too much stress.

I just kept walking outside of the main storyline, I just kept walking until I bumped into a village or a shrine or a labyrinth.

In my opinion, in general, when a comedian says something about their life in their act you should think of it as part of their act. A responsible mature spectator should generally grasp that a performance is a performance and distinct from the actual living person off the stage, even if the performance involves talking about their personal lives.

And I also disagree that discussion of a personal life in a performance is some kind of calculated ploy to trap people into being parasocial.

When I first started writing it I was convinced that my fic was a masterpiece and everyone in my tiny fandom would love it. Now I'm halfway done and I'm so wrapped up in self-doubt that I just want to finish it, even if nobody cares.

I always think of Maria Bamford's standup joke on this: "I do worship celebrities because they're very powerful, their moods create weather... I was feeling bad about it, but then I was like, of course, I'm just a tiny, frightened animal. You know, I look towards the most powerful and fertile of our species for information on how to survive. I need to find out what that Jennifer Aniston is doing, she's a strong sexy monkey. She's gonna tell us where all the bananas are located."

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I don't think this trend (if you can call something that's gone on for like, all of human history) will go away any time soon. Liking celebrities or finding out that they've done awful things (also not new!) doesn't make any difference.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That way you can maintain uncomfortable eye contact!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
People thinking that Mulaney's a hypocrite when they find out about his infidelity =/= prying into everything. If you decide to associate yourself with [thing] and then startling information comes to light about [thing] then yeah, people are going to have opinions about it. That's not parasocial.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
no, thinking something is hypocritical is not parasocial, but you explicitely talked about people being invested in the relationship and that it is their business, which is exactly parasocial.

I went towards the nearest shrine on the map, then the nearest shrine to that, and the nearest shrine to that, and so on. Gotta have those fast-travel spots.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...Okay, but now I'm curious. If nature calls for them both at the same time, do they just go at the same time on their shared toilets???

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it can't be Spamton. Everyone wants him right now!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a bonding experience.

I haven't played this but this is generally my problem with open-world games. I always feel like games are going to punish me if I go in the wrong order or do something the wrong way.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I haven't gone back to RDR2, which I've had for over a year now. I enjoyed what little I played, but I'm not smart enough to figure out what I'm supposed to do, and it does feel more overwhelming than fun after a while.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand how you would say he's "hypocritical"

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering I never saw anything about this, this sounds like you may want to curate your timeline

(not saying what you're saying isn't valid. Just that it could help)

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The art style is something I can stomach and actually like watching people play this, but boy when it's superimposed onto other media (like the main artist and the one who draws similarly drew for Fate Grand Order cards) it highlights how I do NOT like it otherwise

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm someone who dislikes how parasocial a lot of media has gotten, especially streamers and YouTubers, and I still don't consider this exactly the same. He talked about his girlfriend and then wife all the time in his act. A lot of his act was about his personal life. He talked about his wife and relationship with drugs. It was a big part of it. That's why when both things are involved in something like this, there was a big reaction.

It's kinda like if say a comedian who talked a lot about a topic had a falling out with the topic, whether it's a hobby or something else.

Ah, misfired to the wrong anon. well, same sentiment.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that you can't fine random news about celebs annoying/uninteresting, but I find it funny that I only heard about this through f!s. Celeb news is relevant sure, but it's also pretty easy for me to just avoid it? If someone hadn't complained about it on here I'd never have known this was a thing.

Morons should have gotten a bidet instead of another toilet.

I feel kinda bad about, but I'm always so amused whenever something happens in the Supernatural fandom that makes everybody go nuts.
