When I was a teen in the mid-late 2000s I use to wear anime shirts/merch openly and was lucky enough not to get bullied for it (I still got bullied but just not directly for liking a thing lol) - mostly because everyone around me at the time mostly thought of pokemon when they saw anything anime related and were unaware of there being anything more than that.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say, I was a teen in the late 90s and even then places like Hot Topic and Suncoast and FYE had fairly sizeable sections of anime shirts/merch. It wasn't as common to see people wearing it as it is today but it definitely wasn't all that odd either.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It was on the fringe. You wouldn't necessarily be aggressively be bullied for it (that would depend on the environment) but it was definitely weird.

Is there are reason you think you're too old to wear anime merch? Like what would be the outcome if you just wore a t-shirt to the grocery store like you might want to?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on how low or high their tolerance is for having the word pedo screamed at them by twenty five year olds.

I'm not saying touch grass, but I am saying that it would be a very unique community that wouldn't discourage young adults from screaming in grocery stores with t-shirt based rage, and that most of us don't live in such unique communities.

Come on, now

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're doing anyone any favors by not indicating that this is a very, very slim possibility... so slim that it's not worth getting super anxious about.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Has that happened irl?

I know individuals experiences aren't universal, but the 'worst' that's happened to me for wearing a South Park tshirt was a guy asking if I should be wearing it since I was volunteering at a christian charity shop at the time. Don't think there's been that many situations where people go out their way to yell about a shirt unless they were looking for a reason to fight in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Unless the anime shirt happens to have a young girl bending over in nothing but undies on the front, or similar, I can't imagine this happening irl.

is this about people saying that wearing ahegao hoodies is creepy

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I think I'm just too self conscious and I don't want to be "that person" (I think the image that comes up is the worst you can imagine and frankly an extreme that not everyone who enjoys anime/manga would actually fit -- you know the kind). Mind you, I wouldn't mind wearing an old school anime, Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen hoodie or t-shirt. I'm almost thirty and while I could make it work/be fashionable, it would have to remain at home type of clothes, as graphic tees in general just aren't my style and I don't walk around outside like that lol.

No one would care -- I'm well aware -- if I stepped out like that. It just doesn't vibe with the image I have of myself, I guess I'd say. I've never felt the need to parade what I like around as a statement. But sometimes I do wish I could nerd out and wear a shirt with my favorite characters. But it's almost...too nerdy for me (see the worst image I imagine). Such public devotion. I was commiserating with my older cousins about it, since it was their kids walking around like that.

You're always asking the real questions meadowphoenix-- I always appreciate your comments here :)

I get it, the cringe factor people applied to anime fans can really be overwhelming, and the younger generation really didn't get most of the comments and side-eyes lol.

If you do want to get comfortable with nerd stuff, you're on a good track with starting small. Keychains are great. I like watches, because they can look really sophisticated and no one really pays attention to the face. Socks can be a nice secret joy to wear outside. I also like to find the more simplistic icons of an anime and see if I can get tshirts or hoodies or other accessories (i like necklaces and earrings) with them, since they don't read anime to anyone but other fans. Like a hoodie with a moon design or a white cat isn't going to really be odd, even though I know it's Sailor Moon.

I'll also say that I look at fashion instas which wear anime stuff because they tend to find pieces that make it look natural

If this is something you'd like to do, I say try it! I'm not into anime, but I am into lots of other scifi/comics/pop culture stuff. And yeah, most adults wouldn't wear anything like that, at best maybe they have a mug or something.

But, here's something I've learned: people don't pay that close attention to what you're wearing. Especially if it doesn't have a big logo or something on it and it's relatively subtle. Seriously, I've pointed out to coworkers that a particular shirt was LotR themed, or had the Millennium Falcon on it, and only then did *some* people figure it out.

You might also meet fellow fans, or at least like-minded people.

Start with something extremely subtle, only with friends or to the grocery store or something. Maybe put on a cardigan over it so it only partially shows. And see how it feels, if anyone notices, etc.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah, I think I'm going to start with something small or subtle. I was/still am in a way, super into certain fandoms in which I would wear things that reminded folks of fandom adjacent style (say for example Matrix like outfits or outfits with corsets) and they were certainly more subtle (and stylish and easier to make work). I might just get a keychain. Something small other fans might notice before I go for a full on "favorite character on a shirt". That will likely stay home lol, or come out when I'm hanging out with close friends, as they know what I'm into.

...Huh, this secret and replies gave me a new appreciation for living in a country where anime has been mainstream pop culture since the 60s. I'm sorry OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Eh, what can we do. It's not that big a deal, and most people wouldn't bat an eye at say something like a Ironman or Batman shirt, maybe even an Akria shirt, but full on anime clothing is a bit different. Quite frankly,if I was full on "IDGAF" i would do it, and I probably would have done it when I was in my early twenties no hesitation. But alas, I'm not. And I'm the only who gives a shit because no one else would really care either way lol.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry people made you so self-conscious about being a fan, OP. I've worn fandom stuff since I was in my teens and it was *really* hard to find (a Vampire: The Masquerade t-shirt, in fact!) and nobody has ever had a negative reaction. I'm now in my 40s and fandom is so much more mainstream now, nobody blinks at my Wonder Woman shirt.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I'm so glad you can fan out like that! I think people tend to be more... accepting? Of classic comic book/the current MCU/DC (even Trekkies and SW to an extent), hell GoT, fan merch as if it's a collective cultural zeitgeist (I suppose in a way it is) whereas I think (in my experience) anime was relegated to Saturday morning cartoons (Sailor Moon/Pokemon/Card Captor) and late night cable (Adult Swim). The "classics" were definitely far reaching. Superman started as a comic strip in the papers. It's generational. Anime in the US (where I'm located) came in later. Still a big thing and far more mainstream than before though :)

This year I have decided, when I am pushing 40, to embrace the full amount of my cringe and bought a Hololive hoodie. It's never too late to the be best, worst you, OP!

I never wore any anime stuff when I was a teenager because people at my high school were jerks to the kids who wore anime shirts. It's really cool that kids these days can be into anime without their classmates thinking they're losers.

I don't wear a lot of anime merchandise, but I do have a few bags (Loungefly came out with some really cute Sailor Moon bags that are subtle enough to pass for a regular handbag), keychains, and some anime-related jewelry. I feel kinda weird wearing an anime shirt (I have a couple, but I mainly wear them around the house), but I'm happy to lug around a Sailor Moon bag because to most people, it just looks like a cute bag.

Thank you secret maker

As a 45 year old who wears anime t-shirts reasonably regularly, I say go for it!

I honestly don't give a crap what other people think about me, since I've never really fitted in anywhere for pretty much my entire life anyway (thank the gods for the internet), and life is too short not to enjoy what you love.

i definitely was that teen that got teased and bullied for having a dragon ball pencil case, a sailormoon keychain and pokemon stickers.
today 80% of my summer shirts are various anime fandom themed shirts (check uniqlo UT collection) and currently i am rocking the pokemon go fest tshirt as hospital attire.
