Boring tl;dr text secret is boring tl;dr text secret, etc., etc.

The worst part of periods for me personally is the one part that can't be eased or stopped in any way: the bleeding itself. It feels so disgusting that I don't leave my home or interact with anyone while it's going on and I ruin my back camping out for hours on the toilet because it's the only way I feel comfortable down there. (It's not even that heavy, although it used to be, but it's more about sensory issues.)

So all I can think about when the concept of being in a fictional universe comes up is how I would never be able to handle it because I need to lock myself up alone in a bathroom for four days a month (and it's only regular because of pills that I definitely couldn't get in, say, post-apocalyptic settings, just for one example. It would be longer, heavier, and irregular without them.) "Sorry, I can't go save the world right now, it's that time of the month."

I spend time wondering if there are other solutions in fantasy worlds, for instance, do wizards have potions that make it not happen, could I control it somehow with bloodbending, if I were whisked away by a spaceship into a futuristic fandom, would anyone have thought to develop medical technology to just stop periods in the last 50, 500, or 5000 years?

Whenever I try to imagine being in any fictional setting, this inevitably comes up and halts all my daydreams. I spend actual time wondering about how female characters in the fandoms I enjoy can possibly live with it, being in situations where they can't do what I do. I know it's a little different for most people, it's more about the cramps or the mood swings or other things that are also unpleasant, but I just can't imagine living in almost any of my favorite fictional worlds without a hysterectomy. And it kinda ruins my fun.

Although the pain was the worst part for me (to the point I would stay in bed the whole time and take sick days and sometimes ended up in the ER), the blood was nasty and awful too. I do not miss it at all. I still get pain monthly, though not anywhere near what it used to be. But I don't miss the gross parts at all.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-01-15 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the feeling of the blood just gushing out of you.

God, I'm not looking forward to ten to twelve more years of this shit.

Yeah, I thought I had gone into way early menopause about ten years ago, since I'd lost more weight than that before and it stuck around. I was overjoyed.

But nope, about two years ago it came back just in time for perimenopause. huzzah. :/ I would happily have a hysterectomy rather than put up with this crap for any longer.

I always thought I would hate it, and maybe I'm in the minority about it, but it's so fucking weird! It's a strange sensation and I kinda find it funny (in a "hey, look what your body can do!") and annoying. I think I'm kinda just fascinated by bodily functions and this is one of them! But I know a lot of people feel the opposite (and when I'm trying to just go about daily functions I don't enjoy the feeling if wondering if I've made a mess in my seat/work clothes).

My mother let it slip awhile ago that my grandmother claims she went into early menopause in her 30s, and I was like "god please, let that be hereditary". I'm near 35 now, and my period has changed, but I'm not sure if it's heading in that direction or just standard changes. I really don't want to go through this til I'm in my 50s either.

Probably should talk to my new doctor about it and see what she thinks.

I empathize with this, and this is probably TMI, (though you started it) but how do you feel it with a tampon? I have a heavy flow and don't feel it at all.

Or menstrual cup? But if it's blood that's part of the issue, from my understanding menstrual cups kinda require you to get comfortable and used to your body and your blood.

I wish I could use tampons, but I can’t stand the feeling of having something inside there. I can’t even get one in, because I immediately balk at the sensation.

I wondered this also. Once I got used to pads, the feeling stopped bothering me, but I still prefer tampons, which feel like nothing at all.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-16 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP and don't have their same period issues, but I never got into using tampons because if anyone could just forget about having one in long enough to end up with toxic shock syndrome, it would be me.

Have you talked to your gyno or PP or anybody about getting on birth control with no placebo days? If it's interfering with your life that much you can just stop having them. We've invented it already! That exists! If your doctor is a dick about it find another!

doesn't help your fiction problems but it might be a nice relief?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on continuous birth control and it is the bomb! 10/10, super recommend.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve tried stacking, but I get breakthrough bleeding. Changing to a different kind of birth control entirely would be a drawn-out hassle because I’m really prone to bad side effects.

While I've never fully considered it in my fantasy moments (I've managed to become friends with my period and I hope one day you too will have at least less of a sensory reaction to it than you do now, because what you're describing sucks), I've always thought more about it regarding eyesight (as I wear contacts and my contacts have helped slow/stop my loss of eyesight), and how fucked I'd be if my glasses got messed up and how I wouldn't feel like myself 100%/confident. Never mind my asthma lol. And in these cases, I like to add to the story (if it's a magic based universe -- that there's a spell or potion for correcting whatever ails you) the solutions. So, if you got transported to this post apocalyptic world, maybe everyone has to undergo a sort of treatment/patch/injection/the environmental levels are so bad and circumstances so stressful that you loose your period, or it gets put on hold. Something to that effect. And it can be long lasting. It can be short term. Whatever you need it to be. Because then otherwise, where are all these hairless women who never need to shave or wax coming from? Dealt with swiftly, never to mentioned again. I hope you can add something like this to your fantasies. I've seen it in fic and I apply it in my own as well. Good luck!

This secret reminded me that after I got my period for the first time, I spent the whole day feeling squicked by the sensation and super paranoid that something was going to leak. It didn't continue to bother me, though. By the time my second period came around my brain had learned to filter out the sensation.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not exactly related but I love incorporating periods into my fic. Not to be gross or squick people or anything but it's just a real thing that most people wouldn't bother with unless it serves their plot. I'm also conscious of the fact that people have to use the bathroom over the course of a day. Most of the time it could be done "off screen," sure, but sometimes I just feel like I need to mention it (again, not in a gross way). I know I'm weird :/

I feel you on this, OP. I had one of my heaviest days in a while and it left me feeling gross. I’m not using it for anything and am this close to considering a hysterectomy if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m on pills and can choose to skip. The only downside is it’s sometimes heavier if I do.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Periods, high blood pressure medication, glasses/contacts, skin care products, hair care products, shaving... I always think about this stuff in the context of suddenly being stuck in the past or a fantasy world or the post-apocalypse.

It sucks that doctor are such jackasses about it - but frankly, sounds like the best thing you could do is get a hysterectomy. I am so FUCKING glad I did. Fuck periods, who needs that shite?

I didn't have the sensory issues you have, OP, just pain. Hated the mess, hated the cramping, hated how gross pads were but also hated how tampons started to really hurt toward the end.

I hope you can find a solution (like the no-period birth control), and get those days back, OP!

Fantasy not so much, but in my mind (and my sci-fi world building), there's a five or ten year contraceptive that everyone uses, male or female, 100% effective and no periods. Period.

I think about this not in fantasy but in time travel books, where the heroine is thrown back in time, say pre-industrial. *Sometimes* chamber pots are mentioned, but periods have never come up. It's like the authors just want to pretend it doesn't exist.

Also, just in fiction in general, I wonder how all my young Regency heroines in nice white dresses handled it. Did you just not go out? Wear a dark dress? Hope you didn't spot?

I think about this too. And as someone with an overactive bladder who always needs to know where the bathroom is, I also wonder when everyone stops to use the bathroom during nonstop action adventures. I could not function without a working bathroom and I have no idea how people go camping in the woods. I could never do stuff like that or survive an apocalypse.

Getting a hysterectomy in August last year is the best thing I've ever done.
