121. You have a very good taste in games. Especially since you've played Lunar. ^_^

107, 130

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
107. Olesya is PRECIOUS. I think Chad/Ryan fandom, at least, has developed a love for her.

130. I'm still bitter Harry/Luna didn't happen. I shipped them since the fifth book, because Luna's quirky enough to keep Harry grounded (or, rather, in the clouds, perhaps) but she also understands his loss and pain more than the others and just. I honestly thought it was going in that direction, with the scene in the fifth book and then when Harry someone relunctantly took her to Slughorn's party and then noticed how nice she looked. But it didn't, and that's a shame. They'd be so good together.

*forgot to post this in other comment, lol*

113. Yeah, word. New school Johnny doesn't impress me half as much as old school Johnny did. Now it's all just. Okay. Every time I'm excited for him to be in something new I end up just being like, oh. Well then. Especially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which I thought was terrible. He could have been such a good Wonka, but instead he did...whatever that was. Oh well, lol.

155. I loved that book! I didn't really think it was very fandomish, though I'd love to see some fandom stuff for it.

If someone would write fic, I would definitely draw fanart. ^^ Start a community, OP!

I said it on [livejournal.com profile] fuckyouwatchmen, and I'm saying it here...IMHO, hating on Laurie is either a sign of male chauvanism (or internalized male chauvinism, in the case of females hating on Laurie.)

She's my favorite character, and all the hate makes me want to throw this fandom out of a window sometimes.

Re: #124

(Anonymous) 2009-03-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, dude, what? I like Laurie but saying that anyone who doesn't is a chauvanist is not on.

Huh! There are secrets for two of my favorite books ever in one day. Go figure.

131. Try giving blood. You can make up all sorts of stories about the very conspicuous bandage you get to wear afterward, and you actually do get to be somewhat heroic.

137. Chronicles of Pyrdain FTW! Disney adaptation FTL. It's like taking a perfectly good book and cutting out all the words, throwing out half of them, and rearranging what's left in a random order, then selling it with the same title as the original book. [/my attempt at Eilonwy-speak]

141. I had pretty much the same reaction to those lines. Also, major bonus points for writing your secret in the style of the book it's about.

164. I've never heard of this. What is this, and what was so influential about it? *genuinely curious*

164. OP

Startide Rising, a novel in David Brin's Uplift series.

If what I have heard from various sources is correct... well, humans eventually "uplift" chimps and bottlenose dolphins via genetic manipulation, giving them that last push toward sapience, then all three species head into the stars together.

It turns out that uplifting is extremely common among aliens, to the point that there are no known species that didn't have a patron to uplift them - except humans. Humans also don't follow the custom of uplifters enslaving upliftees for thousands of years. Thus, Earthclan - humans and their upliftees, dolphins and chimps - are treated as pariahs in galactic civilization.

The Uplift series was one of the first to play with the whole "aliens grant sapience" trope - I think it may have even invented the term "uplift" for it.

As for why I'm ambivalent about buckling down and reading it despite the influence... well, Ecco the Dolphin was one of my favourite game series, and Brin was an accessory to its murder. He was hired to write the plot of the 3D game when he hadn't even heard of the series before; his plot took what was a beautifully strange tale about a dolphin with dolphiny problems that had ended in a cliffhanger into yet another story about humans aligning with fellow sapients.

I'd just about forgiven it as "hey, it was money for him" when I found out that the dude had confused the Genesis games with "his". Based on a blog post Google told me about, he thought some game he'd written for called Ecco the Dolphin had made it to the Wii Virtual Console. I knew he probably didn't give one iota of shit for the series, but Jesus Christ.

It opened some old wounds.

115 - Great, as if all those Sonic YouTube Poops didn't have enough of that as it is... XD

139 - I am so guilty of liking Batman Forever more than all the other movies (Dark Knight included). Before Joel Schumacher had to go and make the horror that was Batman and Robin, anyway.

144 - THAT GUY'S FACE XD brb laughing like an idiot

Hell yes, Lies of Locke Lamora. The subtext is even more blatant in Red Seas Under Red Skies. (Before one goes to date a woman, there's this whole "is this okay with you, man?" scene that is adorable.)

I have to know, what did he say?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I thought 125 was "Stephen Colbert" (the character, I mean, not the actor/comedian who plays and lent his name to him) of The Colbert Report not Chuck Noblet from Strangers with Candy. Certainly would fit better with some of the "Stephen" fics out there, IMO.

111. Aw. I'm sorry.<3

131. That is hilariously adorable and awesome. When I had a mild leg injury, I pretended I was Hiruma from Eyeshield 21 and had to get better fast so I could get back out onto the field! ;)

Yay, so many book secrets today!

113. But what about Raoul Duke? ;D

114. YES. YES. ME TOO. :DDD

124. Ugh. J-just ignore it, stupid internet quiz. Laurie's awesome.

130. I have to admit, first time around I mainly shipped H/Hr. Second reading of the books, I started to ship him with Luna. It's that scene in the forest that really started it (and the shoes :3)

131. Nothing's wrong with pretending to be Byakuya-sama :D

148. HE'S NOT DEAD. HE'S JUST PARTYING ON THE HEART OF GOLD WITH ZAPHOD. ;______;

N!S: Just looking at the cover, it looks like crap. Ugh DDD:

I'm pretty sure #125 is Stephen Colbert (the character) from "The Colbert Report" and not Noblet from "Strangers with Candy".

Re: 125

Neither "Stephen" nor Chuck is shown in the picture, but it's from a crossover fanfic, so it does involve both fandoms.

109- I have been watching it too. I could see that.

144 ???They do that??? EEWWW!!

148- 42

154- I have not watched it this season. I loved the "Humans are Dead" and "Who's the boom king?" Is it better than those?

Hmm. I wouldn't say it's better, because I find it hard to pick a favorite among their stuff. It's just as good though. You should def. watch the second season - hilarious.
