Quick fic research quesiton.

What is a good US state, outwith New England, for mixed use farming? Livestock (cattle, goats, that sort of thing) as well as hay and small scale cereal cropping? Are any of the midwest states any use? TIA.

Re: Quick fic research quesiton.

A lot of states would work for that, I think. Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan would all definitely fit the bill and I'm sure there are others as well.

Texas for cattle and sheep. Billions of dollars both in meat and hay production.

The Illinois/Indiana/Iowa area would probably be the best choice, but really, any Midwest state should be fine.

Nearly 90% of Kansas's land is devoted to agriculture. The state's agricultural outputs are cattle, sheep, wheat, sorghum, soybeans, cotton, hogs, corn, and salt.

Nebraska has a large agriculture sector, and is a major producer of beef, pork, wheat, corn (maize), soybeans, and sorghum.

The agriculture products of Missouri are beef, soybeans, pork, dairy products, hay, corn, poultry, sorghum, cotton, rice, and eggs. Missouri is ranked 6th in the nation for the production of hogs and 7th for cattle. Missouri is ranked in the top five states in the nation for production of soy beans, and it is ranked fourth in the nation for the production of rice.

anything in the midwest but I'd say Iowa less so; Wisconsin, Michigan, southern Minnesota, Indiana moreso. Wisconsin has a long history of both hay crop and dairy cattle on the same farm, so you're in good in the midwest in general. Iowa is just weird in that regard, everything is one or the other.

Weekend Plans!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2022-08-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing?

My sisters' birthdays are this week (one on 11th, one on 12th). So visiting one this weekend and then grilling out tomorrow. Hopefully going to get by Costco as well.

It's hot all weekend, so I plan to cook up a batch of gazpacho soup, because it doesn't take any cooking.

I think Pokemon Go has a Community Day tomorrow... other than that, just lying around, writing fic, hopefully finally making some progress in streaming my way through Vagrant Story since my pain level has been high and the person I was streaming it FOR has been busy.

Maybe catch up on sleep, since this week started with a sick bunny and I didn't actually sleep much Sunday-Tuesday and then I had to catch up with work after missing half the day at the vet on Monday.

Lots of sleep, hopefully. So exhausted. I'm dog-sitting my sister's dog, so a bunch of walks and giving her some attention. Also giving my kitty some attention so she doesn't feel betrayed.

Getting a flu shot tomorrow.

I'm supposed to do my weekly laundry, tidy my room and I wish I could go you and see my friends and write a bit, but between sleeping off my first work's week and hiding from the heat I suspect I won't get much done.

Are there any conditions you'd read a Mary Sue mc?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Me and a friend were talking about this. Are there any story conditions (tropes, gender of character, genre, etc) that you'd read a book even if you thought the main character was a Mary Sue?

Re: Are there any conditions you'd read a Mary Sue mc?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Sometimes the genre is well-done and the writing is good and the setting is interesting that I don't mind if the main character is a bit much. It's all part of that fun.

Plus I mean like, one man's Mary Sue is another man's Luke Skywalker.

Re: Are there any conditions you'd read a Mary Sue mc?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. If I guess, after a few chapters/episodes, that the MC is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu for real (all the other characters love them unconditionally and fall over themselves trying to court them, they have no real flaws, they can do everything perfectly and are so 'oops haha uwu' about it) I will see it from a mile away, immediately hate the MC, and nope right the fuck out of the story no matter what else it had promised me up front. if the writing or background is so good that I don't notice that the MC is a Mary Sue until it's too late, I'll just be even more mad after I quit.

Re: Are there any conditions you'd read a Mary Sue mc?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Writing an OP character, or a character that you're pretty sure the author really vibes with is like writing a cheque.

A good enough prose style, strong narrative, ability to worldbuild, compassionate eye etc. cashes that cheque.

To give an example that's relevant right now, I'm pretty sure Morpheus of The Sandman is both OP and someone Gaiman really vibes with.

And the worldbuilding and narrative are stunning, minor characters are treated thoughtfully and with compassion (they aren't just tokens to tell us how awesome Morpheus is, yeah?), the areas where Morpheus is OP don't make it impossible to tell stories where he has struggles or makes mistakes or learns something - his OP-ness contributes a great deal to his actual problems, tbh.

It's not... it's not wanting to write a character that is unusual or especially interesting that's the problem, with the characters that get labelled as Mary Sues. It's whether the writer can back them up with a good story.

Hoarding

(Anonymous) 2022-08-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the comments on the secret the other day. Just wanted to share, I guess.

I’ve recently been coming to terms with recognizing that I’m not just messy or lazy, I have strong tendencies towards hoarding. A lot of people in my family struggle with it, so I’ve assumed it’s normal. After getting some distance from my family and looking into hoarding disorders more I realized my issues come from a similar place. I’m starting to fight back against my urges to hold on to stuff and let messes pile up but it’s really difficult to change my ways, especially after some circumstances where I’ve lost most of my possessions in the past. I can get very insecure about the feeling of losing things because of that.

Does anyone on here have tips for dealing with this kind of thing? I’ve found resources on r/hoarding to be really insightful and also very helpful for feeling less alone and ashamed, and I would love to hear from anyone on this. Either way thanks for reading, it’s tough but I’m getting better about this stuff a little at a time!

Just laminated my brows at home! What did you do today?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
After seeing a bunch of (grown-adult, sensible-seeming) YTers do at-home brow lamination videos, I got a lash and brow laminating kit off Amazon and went for it. So far so good. They haven't all broken off or anything, and they are definitely up. I like makeup and skincare so I'm not a total noob about "beautifying" products, but it's wild to me that laminating your own brows (and curling your own lashes!) is a thing you can just do on a whim for like ten dollars.
