What remakes did you like better than the original?

Brendan Fraser's The Mummy is the greatest remake, period. The original 1930's one is a total snoozefest and the worst of Universal's classic monster lineup.

I know it's sacrilegious but I preferred Will Smith's take of the Genie over Robin Williams. The live-action version of Disney's Aladdin itself was inferior to the animated version but yeah, I liked the edge Smith brought to the character.

Battlestar Galactica is the obvious choice. I second the choice of Fraser's The Mummy below.

Does Buffy count as a remake?

Cinderella is one of the Disney live actions that I think is good and also better than the original.

To Be or Not To Be
the Peter Jackson King Kong
the musical Little Shop of Horrors
Nightmare Alley
the women Ghostbusters :P
I liked the movie version of LOTR better than the books
the Maltese Falcon everybody knows with Humphrey Bogart was actually a remake, there were TWO previous versions which most people don't even know about. I saw them both and they were awful whereas the classic Maltese Falcon is one of my favorite movies ever.

The Blob (1988) – there’s something about how very 80s it is
Father of the Bride (1991) – this may just be because I’m not much of a Spencer Tracy fan
Freaky (2020) – way, way different take
High Society (1956) – some of this is down to me finding Katherine Hepburn pretty grating in The Philadelphia Story, but I think this movie feels smoother and lighter
Village of the Damned (1995) – it’s not a good movie, but I enjoy the cheesy B-movie horror of it

Hawaii Five-0 (2010) – it had its problems, but that banter was something else
Whose Line Is It Anyway? (1998) - the UK one was good, but I think the US one was better

2011's Fright Night.
David Tennant made the whole movie for me.
And Colin Farrell was pretty good, too!

Freaky Friday (2003) (and the 1995 version) >>>>>> Freaky Friday (1976). Never read the book.

When I was younger I thought the 1995 version was the best version, but it's mostly likely due to it being the first version I watched. I watched the 2003 version a few years ago and I really liked it. I don't know why I didn't like it as much when I was a teen? Maybe going through my internalized misogyny at the time? Wanted to act like I was too mature for such girly things.

The Thomas Crown Affair.

The remake is so much more fun. And perhaps it’s generational, but Steve McQueen’s stoic version of the character isn’t charming or attractive to me at all. Pierce Brosnan’s version isn’t my type either, but I do like to watch him do his suave, charming thing.

Assault on Precinct 13. The original 70s movie was very...well...70s. There was literally a five minute shot watching a car drive slowly down the street.

The 2005 remake, however, had Laurence Fishburne, Ethan Hawke, and Gabriel Byrne all trying to kill each other. Yes, please.

What season of what show was the worst you've ever seen?

I'm having a brain fart, should I have written 'what season of what show' as 'which season of which show'? Bleh. Well, whatever. You get the gist.

Of shows where I actually watched the whole season, season 6 of Supernatural was so awful it made me quit the show.

Season 3 of NBC Hannibal, I'm so sorry to the fandom but I just couldn't do it anymore. It got so on the nose about how indulgent and pretentious it was I couldn't keep watching. Instead I skipped all the way to the ending of the series and left it there.

with the exception of the finale, the last season of The Big Bang Theory was a chore to watch.

Sherlock S4. They should've stopped with the pilot. Then we could have lamented about the brilliant show we could have got.

Season 2 of Friday Night Lights is so hilariously bad!!! OMG It was like a fanfic writer took over the show for a season, including leaving the story super short and unfinished. I love Season 2 so much for being such a hilarious season. And what makes it even funnier is the rest of the show for the most part is pretty solid, last two seasons were SO good.

Star Trek Discovery Seasons 1, 2, and 3. Just pure garbage. Badly written, badly filmed, badly acted, without any redeeming features. Not that subsequent season was any good, but they at least tried to hit the undo button. They are the worst seasons of any Star Trek, including S1 TNG, S1-3 ENT, and 1-7 of VOY. That is how bad they are. I'd rather watch a back to back marathon of A Night In Sickbay and Dear Doctor than any Discovery.

Season 4 of Miami Vice is ridiculous and terrible. The plots of some of these episodes are utter nonsense, and I'm really confused as to what made this happen.

season 7 of buffy was hot trash, with the cast and crew demonstrably not giving a flying fuck about anything that happened at any moment (season 6 was ugly, but at least the people involved appeared to care about it)

martha's season of dr who - the whole "pining after somebody who's pining after someone else" thing got old within one and a half episodes

Infestation....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2022-10-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's happened. Someone came into shelter with bedbugs. Exterminator is coming tomorrow, and I hope to gods it's all sorted by the time I go back to work Friday. Arrrgh.

Apparently, the homeless shelter in the town half an hour from here is having a bedbug outbreak. What a mess.
