i think the reels/tiktoks are super cringe too, but i also fully support people making money off others in any way they way to, as long as they feel comfortable, which is why most of these people make tiktoks in cosplays to begin with.

I don't think people should have to be professional-level just to do something for fun.

+100, I hate the attitude of some fandom people who thinks that every fan work needs to be professional level or people shouldn't do it. It's completely against the spirit of fanwork imo.

well, too bad, because you're wrong. is there bad cosplay? of course. is all of it bad? not by a long shot. am I mad? a little, because I've been doing it for 20+ years and I have Seen Some Shit but I also know that people who tend to shit on cosplayers have only ever really seen a very small subset of them and tar all of it with the same brush. you just don't know, man.

however, I agree on the tiktoks. I also dislike larp for the same reason.

I don't really understand your point here. If anything I'm glad people are more comfortable with expressing their nerdiness through cosplay, even if it means having to see more lower-quality stuff from people who have just started the hobby. The tiktoks are a bit irritating just because of how they constantly repeat eachother, but I say i've seen more good cosplays than bad ones in the years I've been in fandom.

idk, i kinda love that lizzo cosplays every holiday she can find. and the tiktokers are very good to me *shrug*.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I don't really like cosplay so I just block it and move on. Other people think my hobbies are cringe, so they don't have to look at them. That's just basic good manners.

I was thinking the same thing. I like cosplay OK but I usually don't see it unless I'm looking for it. Granted there are probably corners of the internet where it's harder to get away from but the bottom line is that you don't have to look at it.
pantswarrior: "I am love. Find me, walk beside me..." (Default)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2022-12-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as a cosplayer this is exactly what I was thinking. I don't really care what some specific random person thinks of what I'm doing. I make a lot of people happy and have made some awesome friends through this hobby, as well as learning various skills (some more useful than others, admittedly).

So if some other person thinks cosplay is cringe? Okay, that's their right. Just as long as they're not harassing anyone for it. There are a lot of harmless things I can't stand too, and I just don't engage when I come across it. :P

I think there's nothing wrong with dressing up for fun. It doesn't have to be great. The point is to have something to do and to enjoy your time. IDK why some are consumed with the idea of being perceived? Maybe not everyone is always that concerned with how they come across to others/normies/general societal expectations when they go out and experience life, and...I don't see a problem with that.

Cosplay is an expression of self/art and we really see less and less of art/expression for purely wanting to do it (not for money or fame) so I would rather see people of varying skillsets dressing up for a themed event than to....not have a space for that.

InB4 "People capitalize upon fandom doing Tiktoks-"

They're people networking in a late capitalistic society. I'm not going to make a judgement call on every single cosplay ever so that we can have a consensus of what is "good" cosplay purely for the art vs for the money. I'm just trying to say, strip away all the initiative to do it for monetary gains/gaining popularity, these people found a hobby to do, and they're expressing themselves and if that encourages others to express themselves for creative reasons, then I wouldn't want cosplayers to stop cosplaying, even if people will keep judging them for it.
Of course, if what they do is harmful then of course they need to be stopped. But come on, let's not have bad faith takes just to be an asshole.

The kids these days really want to police the way that other people have fun, don’t they? I blame the parents.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody said they can't have fun. People just don't have to like it, either. So in a way, you're trying to police how people enjoy fandom as well.

Why do you even care, though? Someone else's harmless hobby has nothing to do with you, so why bother having any feelings about it at all? Just scroll past to something you do like, damn. Don't kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part that cringes.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, its just people having a fun time dressing up.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
eh. I think I’d like to be a cosplayer if I could ever hope to afford the materials and learn the skills to make it happen. But I get nothing out of seeing anyone else do it. So I just…don’t. On the rare occasion someone posts their cosplay where I can see I just scroll on by. It’s pretty easy, you should give it a try, OP!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
If you do want to cosplay and have any disposable income, a great place to start is secondhand shops and thrift stores, if those are a thing where you are. I'm finally making enough where I guess I could stop buying everything but shoes and underwear secondhand, but one of the costumes I'm proudest of started as a pile of thrift store clothes and old sheets, with giant zip ties as corset boning. Even the thread and most of the trim was secondhand.

And I'm not a great seamstress by any means.

You can get surprisingly far with thrift store clothes and a big stainless steel stock pot to dye* them in, provided they're natural fibers like cotton and silk.

*if you use a pot for dyeing stuff, keep it aside for crafts.

And those all metal sewing machines from the 1970s on back show up secondhand fairly often, if you do want to learn to sew.

Most of us arent doing it for money, or clout, etc. We are doing it for fun and its our way of being in fandom.

Fuck you for being a judgy cunt.

And I sound pressed about it because yeah, cosplayers sometimes get a bad wrap, but if ppl give shitty fic and art a chance, you should give the worst cosplay a chance because its a labor of love from someone who cares.

Fuck you for making fun/judging someone's love of a fandom as cringe.

Good to know that folks on FS are completely normal about what people do in their spare time when it doesn't harm anyone, but god forbid if its remotely deemed 'cringey' by some bland person.
