What are your least favorite tagging issues on AO3?

I hate when people use / for platonic relationships instead of &. I always have to eyeball it hard to make sure I am about to read a father son fic and not baby Yoda and the Mandalorian hooking up.

When people tag for characters who are not central to the story; yes they may be technically in it, but a two or three line conversation or just even an aside mention does not justify them being tagged in. Stop tagging every character just to boost SEO, focus on the core group.

fucking tired of the inconsistencies and straight up lack of tags for trans characters and reader-insert. especially the latter, holy shit do people just straight up not tag for it at all including in the actual ship tags (x/Reader for example). never have I wanted to so badly to have the opportunity to take back my click than on fics where nothing in the tags or summary indicates that all those wonderful, specific kink tags apply to a reader-insert.

I also hate when authors post all of their work into one work on the archive even though they’re separate works. It ends up being hundreds of chapters that tags dozens of fandoms and hundreds of pairings, to say nothing of the content and kink tags -_-

I desperately want there to be an option to sort by the number of tags. The more tags there are, the more shitty the story is. I have not read a good story that has so many tags.

(I would also like the ability to block authors who put too many tags in their works so their stories always show up no matter what, but that's not really a tag issue. But still, it would help me so much.)

Age regression and de-aging

I hate that this tag is used both for literal de-aging (an adult character is magically turned into a child within the plot) and ageplay or “littles”.

I am very interested in the former and very uninterested (or actively squicked) by the latter. Excluding “ageplay” and “littles” helps in most cases, but a few always seem to fall through the cracks.

I've already grumbled about the big ones I have (every possible iteration of the same tag worded differently is probably the biggest) so here's another one that actually is more my personal annoyance: tags on SERIES.

I am not a fan of "wall of text" tags, but once I get up around ten stories in a series, since I'm not just writing the same thing over and over, the series page turns into a wall of text, and very few tags apply to the series as a whole, themes or whatever. It's tagged for every darned thing from fluff to porn, every story's main focus...

I have a series that takes place over five years in a pairing's life together and it just makes me wince to look at the tags on the page for that series because there are literally 50 stories in it of all different types and the tags thus are all over the place and make no sense. I've pared down to the bare minimum on each individual fic, but there are still 50 stories and all their tags are combined. -_-

I just really wish I could put tags on the series specifically, since people can still find more specific detail by searching for tags and turning up the fics individually. The series does not need to detail on the front page everything that is in every one of those fics.

Tagging a pairing that's mentioned but isn't the main pairing of the fic. Please for the love of god use Background Pairing/Tag for that instead of just Pairing/Tag.

mass tagging of characters that aren’t even in the fic but are part of the franchise.

crossovers clogging up the tag.

not warning for incest (rife in the Encanto tag)

- Mixing up / and & is super annoying but so is its cousin, using both.
- "Can be read as platonic or romantic", you're the writer you're the one that decides how certain relationships are meant to be read! (It almost always reads platonic because if it was easy to read as romantic that would...make it romantic.)
- Tagging every character from canon that appears rather than whichever ones are focused on the most. I prefer bunching them all together like "Class 1-A" or "[Show] Ensemble" so we know which group of characters is focused on.
- Putting background/minor ships in the main pairings tag.
- Using multiple similar tags to mean the same thing.
- Ragging on other ships, characters, or types of content in the tags.
- If the tags take up most of the page when I'm on desktop (let alone when I'm on mobile) you're doing too much.

My main tag gripe is when people write tags that are just sentences/commentary. Like:

Ship/Ship, Ship2/Ship2, character, character, AU, angst, romance, maincharacter is so sweet in this, because he loves her, but she keeps turning him down, the last scene is hilarious, I was so tired when I wrote this, comments equal more chapters, dm me your ideas

I hate searching for my OTP and finding every third fic is actually the OTP/another character, with each couple permutation of the throuple tagged as well as the three together. Fans of each couple don't want the throuple, just tag the throuple, it's not hard!

And, always and forever, people not tagging their ABO kink when the male omegas have vaginas. It's basic courtesy for anyone who would appreciate the heads up, and let's actually interested parties folter their search accordingly.

I recently got into a fandom that emerged when AO3 was just getting started and tagging hadn't really been established. People understood putting the characters and the pairing in the tags, because the same rudimentary idea existed on FFN, as well as AUs, but anything beyond that didn't really happen. (Bonus: the writers are still tagging like that in 2023.)

I had a really crappy day. That’s it. That’s just everything. It sucked in little ways from start to finish and I have a big bump on my forehead from an accident with a door and I had to wash my quilt right at bedtime and I just want one nice easy calm relaxing day where no one needs anything from me.

I made a mistake in a log today that could have gotten us in hot water if my supervisor hadn’t been able to edit it. I’m trying to tell myself that I’m still learning and not to panic but my anxiety spiked and my brain keeps insisting that I did something ‘wrong’ and ‘there’s no way to fix it’ even though it’s been resolved. I’m taking a lunch time walk right now and trying to calm down but my anxiety over this kind of thing sucks major balls.

Jesus fucking Christ I'm in pain right now. Had two root canals, and because it involved an abscess, they had to prop my mouth open with that thing that blocks the stuff from getting down your throat. So my jaw is spasming too. And dentist wouldn't prescribe anything. So I'm stuck with tylenol, ibuprofen, and my heating pad.

I'm really hungry, but there is no way my jaw is going to do food right now.

Florida drivers on Friday nights/Saturday mornings are a fucking nightmare. One of them caused an accident that shut down a major bypass, and it almost made me miss my flight home this past Saturday. These assholes are reckless and often drunk. This shit is why I moved 1000+ miles away to where it's cold and there are fewer (overpriced) sports cars.

This is so embarassing for me.
A while ago, something happened to someone I haven't thought a lot about before, and I found myself... drawn to the event in a way I couldn't figure out. It wasn't a perverse kink thing, or a... nurturing urge or something like that, it felt a little? like jealousy (my fantasies all have a kind of a masochistic bent for some reason, ever since I can remember), but that wasn't really it either. Today, I finally figured out what kind of fantasy the feeling was trying to pull out: one where I was there, saved them, gotten hurt instead, and they stayed with me in the hospital. This kind of thing might be sort of normal, as far as I can tell, but it's causing me so much internal embarassment that I can hardly type it out.
